There are many factors to take into consideration when purchasing a wig. Here at Simply Wigs we have put together some guidelines that will hopefully make your decision easier.

Choosing Your Wig

Deciding for the first time which wig will suit you can seem to be a daunting task. Follow this useful guide and you will soon be making that decision with confidence.

Face Shape

First decide on your face shape. Stand in front of a mirror and decide which shape best suits you:

Oval

The OVAL shaped face is longer than wide, with a jaw that's narrower than the cheekbones. Because the oval shaped face has no dominant areas and is so proportional, the oval shaped face looks good with just about any hairstyle, length or texture.

Round

The ROUND shape face is characterized by a wide hairline and fullness below the cheekbones. These faces look very good with a geometric or linear style, which breaks up the "round" appearance. ADD HEIGHT, when possible, and long, wispy side areas to make the cheeks look narrow. Comb hair close to the head on the side and at the neck. AVOID LOTS OF WIDTH.

Oblong

The OBLONG shape face is characterized by a very long and narrow bone structure. Use a fringe or half-bang across the forehead by creating soft waves or curls in the crown and nape areas. This helps to create the illusion of an oval. ADD SOFTNESS.

Triangle

The TRIANGLE shape face is characterized by a narrow forehead and a wider chin. Shapely layered or curly styles. A heavy fringe and fullness on top will soften a wider crown. Hair should be layered all around and tapered into the back and sides. SOFTEN THE EDGES.

Heart

The HEART shape face is characterized by a wide forehead and a narrower chin. Bring some hair onto the forehead to disguise its width. Keep hair close to the head at the eyes but make it slightly full around the jaw, and below and in front of the earlobes. ADD VOLUME TOWARDS THE CHIN.

Diamond

The DIAMOND shape face is characterized by a narrow chin and forehead with wide cheekbones. Diamond shaped faces need narrow sides and fullness at the chin. Bobs work very well for this shape. Avoid wearing height on top or volume on the sides. Use some fringe or bang to cover narrow forehead. REDUCE THE WIDTH AT THE SIDES.

Square

The SQUARE shape face is characterized by a wide hairline and jaw. Square shaped faces need height or waves on top and narrowness at the sides, to break up the "squareness". Comb the hair off the forehead to add height to the face. CURLY or WAVY texture and wisps of hair around the face break the wide, straight lines common to the square face. SOFTEN UP THE EDGES.

Choosing Your Colour

There are three ways that you can choose a colour for your wig.

Cut a sample from the front or top of your hair - 1" long.

Write the colour numbers that are closest to your own colour and send the sample with your order. We'll ship your wig in a colour that best matches your own hair sample.

Wig Colour Samples

This is the best way to choose your colour as we can send you actual colour swatches upon request. Swatches are available for viewing for £20.00 per colour swatch ring. This is either refunded or credited towards your purchase upon return to Simply Wigs.

Please check all colours against natural light as colours can look slightly different under artificial light.

If you are looking for a complete change always remember it is more flattering to choose a lighter shade than your own to create a softer and more youthful look.

If you go darker the effects can be quite harsh and unflattering, you would need to wear a much darker make-up to balance your look.

Which Size Am I?

It is important to get the correct head size but it is very easy to measure for a wig.

All our wigs are adjustable in size using elastic adjusters located in the nape of the wig.

To measure the circumference of your head for your size, simply take your cloth tape measure and measure from your front hairline to just above the ears, to where your neck bends and back around to the front hairline.

Wig Care

General

Wash your piece as little as possible depending on the piece's environment, this will vary from wearing the piece 12 to 25 times.

If you wear a wig every day, it's a good idea to have a back-up piece.

You can style your piece every time you wear it, but with your fingers and a pick and very gently. Or lightly comb with a wide tooth comb. If knots have accumulated at the ends a straight or slightly wavy wig, pick apart the knots by starting near the end of the hair and working your way back to the top, using a little spray-on leave-on wig conditioner.

Synthetic (Fibre) Care

Synthetic wigs are very easy to care for, compared to human hair wigs. The most important thing is to use products that have been specially formulated for use on synthetic fibre wigs and hair add-ons. Even the most mild and gentle products intended for human hair will eventually dull the fibers of a synthetic wig. Hairspray for human hair is especially damaging to a synthetic wig, and it can actually deteriorate the fibres.

It is important to use combs and brushes that are designed for use on synthetic wigs, or if using a regular hairbrush or comb, be sure it has the rubber “tips” at the end of each brush bristle or tooth of the comb. This will prevent the fibres from splitting, and keep the wig from looking fuzzy and dull before its time.

A full wig or 3/4 cap fall generally needs to be washed only about once every ten to 12 times it is worn. The reason most wigs need cleansing is to rinse the accumulated scalp oils from the cap, rather than to wash the actual fibers. However, if you use a lot of mousse, gel, or spray on your wig, it will likely need to be washed more often.

Remember, each time the wig is washed, it shortens its lifespan, and the idea is to use as few styling products as possible so that it won’t need to be washed as often. Also, wearing a wig cap underneath your wig will help to absorb the scalp oils.

Every wig and hair add-on we sell comes with a care tag, but some customers cut off the tags and toss them out without realizing there is important care information on the reverse side, so we’ll offer this brief procedure for washing and conditioning a synthetic wig:

First, gently brush out the wig to remove any tangles (unless the wig is extremely curly and/or it came with a tag telling you that it shouldn't be brushed). Most of the longer styles will become quite matted towards the back, and it may be necessary to gently separate the tangled strands with your fingers. TIP: Apply wig spray as lubricant to aid brushing and easy removal of any tangles.

When the wig is ready to be washed, fill the sink with about 2 quarts of cool water. Never use hot water, as this could relax the curl that was set into the wig during the manufacturing process. Pour about 2 capfuls of synthetic wig shampoo into the water and then submerge the wig. When the wig is fully wet, swish it around for about a minute and then let soak for about another minute. TIP: Leave the wig to soak in the shampoo and water for 5 minutes before washing. This will loosen any stubborn debris and require less rubbing friction. Repeat the washing process if you feel that the first wash has not fully cleansed the hair or fibre.

Remove the wig and rinse in cold water until no suds remain. Then place the wig on a bath towel to completely dry overnight, or you may place it on a folding wig stand, which will speed up the drying process. It is all right to blot the wig with a towel, but don’t twist the wig or ring it out. You can use your fingers to gently separate and arrange the strands as the wig is drying, but don’t try to comb or brush the wig while still wet. The fibers could be stretched to the breaking point. Tip: Always rinse the shampoo off with the water flowing in the direction of the hair fibre. Lightly spray conditioner onto the wig after towel drying to aid later brushing and to return oils lost through the washing procedure.

If you wish, you can use a spray-on conditioner on the wig while damp. Work the conditioner through the strands with your fingers, NOT a brush or comb. When the wig is completely dry, you can brush it and style it as you usually would.

Do not ever use any type of electric styling appliance on your synthetic fiber wig, thinking that this will be quicker than the method described above. Even on the coolest settings, a blow dryer, hot rollers, and curling irons will frizz the fibres, and may even melt them, therefore ruining the wig.

Human Hair Care

Although it is the most natural and durable of all fibres from which wigs are made, human hair is more difficult to take care of, because each time it gets wet, it will lose the style, just as your own hair does. The only styles that would be fairly easy to take care of would be if the wig has a good perm in it, and is worn just moussed and scrunched without using anything else to style it. Also if you wear your hair in a straight, smooth style, a human hair wig would be ok. Otherwise, some kind of heat would have to be used to style it.

Draw enough lukewarm water in a large pan or bowl to cover the wig or hairpiece well.

Dissolve a capful of prescribed wig shampoo.

Squeeze shampoo solution through hair gently, keeping hair going in one direction or it may tangle. Rinse wig well with plenty of lukewarm water.

Dissolve a capful or so of wig conditioner in plastic tub or pan of water to cover well. Work mixture through wig hair (remember: same direction). Rinse with fresh water. Lay wig out on towel and pat out excess water.

Pin on wig form and pick or comb out gently. At this point a leave-in conditioner maybe used. If working on a long wig, start combing out the hair at the ends and work up the strand to the roots. Wig may be set in rollers if desired and placed under hood dryer, set on warm, or left to dry overnight. A hot curling iron may be used on 100% human hair wigs.

What is Monofilament?

The second most common cap construction is the “Monofilament-Top.” This is a wefted wig that features an inset of transparent micro-mesh sewn in at the crown, with the individual strands of synthetic fibre or human hair hand-tied into the mesh. Mono-top wigs are generally more natural-looking, as the hair appears to be growing out of a real scalp

This type of cap was first developed for women who had experienced significant hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia, or other medical reasons, as the transparent mesh allowed the bare scalp to show through. You may sometimes see mono-top wigs referred to as "medical wigs" for this reason. However, many women with full heads of hair prefer the mono-top wigs for their superior natural appearance. With a mono-top wig, the hair can be more sharply parted on either side of the head than with a conventional wefted cap wig.

All mono-top wigs feature "tape tabs" on the inside of the cap, usually in 4 or 5 spots. These tabs are made of a shiny plastic material, and allow the wearer to use double-sided tape to secure the wig to the head, if necessary. Generally, mono-top wigs are recognized as a higher quality wig product, and are more expensive than standard wefted cap wigs. A slightly less expensive alternative is a wig featuring a monofilament part, rather than a full monofilament top. These are wigs that have a thin strip of monofilament mesh sewn in just at the left, right, or centre part line. In these cases, the location of the part cannot be changed.

Monofilament wigs are specially designed for those with severe or total hair loss. Most of their advantages are in comfort, but there are some advantages to their natural styling ease as well. All of the comfort advantages are brought back to square one, if you have a full or average head of hair. You will have to decide if the styling advantages are worth the additional cost of a mono wig.

Securing the Wig

All the wigs have adjustable straps on the inside that may be tightened to hold the wig securely to your head.

The Mono top and some of the Monofilament wigs come with tape tabs. This means that you can apply a small amount of wig tape to further secure the wig.

You may also purchase ‘snappy combs’ that may be sewn into the inside of the wig for additional security. These combs clip to your hair. They attach to very thin/fine hair and short hair.
