Wigs, Turbans or Going Bald?

Wigs, Turbans or Going Bald?

The right decision for you.

Dealing with Hair Choices

I think I can speak for most of us when I say, that losing your hair, is hands down, terrifying. Looking back, I think the first thing that ran through my head was
‘WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO?!’

I was only in high school when I lost my hair the first time round, and I think my solution was to try and be as subtle at possible. So I opted for a hairband. Being a young, girly girl I probably had one in every single colour, but that was my disguise and my way of coping until I became confident enough for a wig.

I think when I became slightly older, I just wanted to feel somewhat normal and look like other girls at my school, and that’s when my mum took me shopping for my first wig. Now, over a decade later, I’m more than confident wearing a wig, I’m confident wearing different styles and I think that has a lot to do with, my age, my experience and the supportive people in my life.

The point of this blog though wasn’t to tell you my life story,

But I suppose setting some kind of context suggests that at different points of my life I’ve felt more comfortable with different solutions to covering my alopecia. Or perhaps different activities or different lifestyles may suit different options. I know plenty of people who choose to wear turbans or go bald when exercising or on holiday rather than wearing a wig. Yet I wear a wig whenever I leave the house and I just couldn’t see it any other way, and I think one of the main reasons for this is the need to fit in in such a ‘selfie’ obsessed culture (I’m guilty of the occasional Instagram selfie, woops.)

All in all, there is no right or wrong, to dealing with hair loss, or disguising it. For me, I feel comfortable and happy wearing a wig and having the option to change my hairstyle on a daily basis.

But it’s taken me a long time to get to this stage.

And that said, although I’m comfortable wearing a wig and openly discussing it, I wouldn’t have the confidence to go bald or even wear a turban. In fact I envy those that do have the confidence and look totally fabulous doing it!

What do you prefer to wear, a wig or a turban? Or are you happy going bald? I’d love to know what you feel most comfortable in, and who knows, it might even inspire me to brave all and go bald one day.

Love Steph

  1. I’ve got female pattern baldness but I also have a very large head so getting wigs to fit isn’t really possible so I have to put wig tape on and it still inches its way off after an hour or two. Also I have a long shaped head and face so baldness is not a good look on me. I’ve tried turbans but they go up in the middle exposing the most noticeable bald part which defeats the object. As I can’t afford a hair transplant I’m left to just put up with it. They say it’s purely a cosmetic issue but it really gets me down.
