What are the side effects of getting your hair chemically straightened?

My journey to wearing a wig, was due to 3 disasters with my hair. On all 3 separate occasions, under the hands of professional hairdressers. Having my hair professionally straightened, my hair fell out and was burnt on 2 occasions.

My "wig journey" began with a very small itchy patch of dandruff in the Winter of 2023. By late August I had several bald patches, and was then diagnosed with Alopecia Areata.

A lot of my already fine hair fell out

My hair has never been great. It is very fine and only really looks good when freshly washed and styled. To add to this, I am not too good at styling my own hair, so the cost of having regular blowdrys was becoming quite expensive.

I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica and for the next three years was taking prednisolone, a steroid tablet to reduce inflammation, enabling me to function like a normal person.
