If you are suffering hair loss, wearing a wig will help you to take control of the situation. You decide on the style, make, colour and texture of the wig you want to wear. Whatever your reason, whether it’s for a new look or if you require a wig for medical reasons, the choice is endless.

It is completely normal to feel nervous about going out in a wig. How do you cope with the nerves or the fear of discovery? My decision to wear a wig was an easy choice even though initially, I was embarrassed to wear it in public and only wore it around the house. When you first start wearing a wig, you may find it hot and uncomfortable but that soon wears off as you become used to it. Our heads naturally sweat but it is something that we don’t always notice because our hair absorbs it. When you wear a wig, the heat and sweat from your head can increase. Wearing a wig cap will help and will also act as a base to keep your wig in place.

Putting on a wig is as normal to me as brushing my teeth. I receive many compliments, even from people I don’t know. Many think I go and have salon treatments every week! I tell people I wear wigs because I am happy with my choices and I am confident in how good they look. I tell people how convenient and easy life is with wigs. You can spend an extra half hour in bed in the morning, rather than having to get up and wash and style your hair.

A wig will make you look good and feel better. Caring for your appearance is not being vain. We express our individuality through our hair and styling it is part of our daily routine. If you’re suffering from hair loss or if your hair is not in good condition, a wig will help you to continue with a look that feels familiar.

Your decision to wear a wig is your own personal choice. It’s empowering when you have the confidence to be whoever you choose to be.I am confident wearing my wigs when out and about whether it is a day out or a night at a favourite restaurant. I like to change them around as well. I would normally wear a short bob on a daily basis, but sometimes I like to go a little longer.

  1. Hi,

I’m working on a book about baldness and the social and emotional impact that comes with losing your hair. It will be an anthology and I’m looking for contributors. It will be a non profit project. Any money that may come from sales will go to paying expenses in producing this book, and any other money will go to charities such as the National Alopecia Areata Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

I’m looking for personal stories and essays about topics associated with hair loss such as wigs, relationships, coping skills and embracing baldness.

If you think your readers would like to share their stories please let them know about this project.

    Thank you, and God bless,

    Larry

  2. This blog is really helpful and makes you feel you are not alone. I have alopecia areata and it comes around every 5 to 10 years. I am currently going through it again and starting to wear my wig again. This time I have gone for the Codi instead of the short style Sally. I have had it cut into a bob and feel very happy and comfortable in it. On holiday at moment so using this time to get used to wearing it for a full day. I am being positive this time around and just telling people instead of trying to hide my condition as I’ve done in the past. Many thanks again.

  3. Hi ladies

My hair started falling out at the start of the menopause when I was in my early 50s, starting with my eyebrows and working its way backwards towards the crown. At first I made a false fringe on a hairband from hair extensions (yes, really, I didn’t know about Simply wigs then!) trying to cover up the bald/thinning areas. As soon as it became apparent that the hair was never going to return, I started wearing a wig which I bought from a London supplier. I was dreading the first time I wore it to work and decided to tell my colleagues straight away. They were very supportive and really complimentary about my new hair and people genuinely don’t think I am wearing a wig, even after I’ve told them it IS a wig. I love wigs and feel SO much more confident. Like you, Lila, my ‘hair’ always looks fabulous now. I think Michelle and the other younger women who go natural look really amazing and beautiful and I hope I would have the confidence to do the same if I were younger (I’m 63) but thank heavens for wigs too and thank heavens for Simply Wigs, the nicest wig supplier I have ever used.

  4. Hi Janet

Thank you for your comments. The bob with the fringe is the Codi in Toasted Brown, It’s the one I wear every day, although I have 3 of them so I can swap them around while one is being washed.

    Lila x

  5. Hi Lila, thanks for reply, I just love how you look in your pictures and would love to know which wig you are wearing, the fringed bob is really fantastic on you.

    I. like you, could never go back to my own hair, my wigs look so much better.
    Have a great weekend, Janet.

  6. Lila, this is such a great piece x and you look fantastic in the photos x x x beautiful honey x

  7. Hi Janet

Thank you for your comment. Apart from my family, no-one has any idea this is not my real hair. People think I spend a lot of time in the salon! I know what you mean about the effect of the menopause on your real hair and the amount of time I used to spend in the morning was ridiculous only to have it all frizzy by the time I got to work. I never want to go back to that!

I typically pay £200 per wig and it sounds a lot but I would spend over £500 per year at the hairdressers on cuts and colours plus around £60 per month on styling products including heat protectors because all that heat from the hairdryer and irons caused damage. To buy a wig every 4 to 6 months saves money in the long run and the wig always looks better!!

I have made mistakes, not least in where I used to buy my wigs. I have had some disasters! I now only buy from Simply Wigs – I can’t rate them highly enough.

I made a lot of mistakes at the beginning, especially with regard to where I bought my wigs

  8. I completely agree with you Lila. wearing a beautiful wig really can boost your confidence. Problems with my hair started with the onset of the dreaded menopause.
My hair went from beautiful to horrible, it had become so thin and see through. I was at my wit’s end and I had become very self conscious, I Googled for hair loss solutions and Simply Wigs came up and sounded like the kind of company I would like to do business with, especially as the business is family owned. This has been one of the best decisions I have made. I have four wigs at present and am looking to buy another, I am hooked. Wearing a wig for me is just the best. I get lots of compliments about MY hair, I always say you mean my Wig, then wait for the reaction, it’s never disappointing. So whatever your situation is with your hair, you can get a new ‘do’ that will make you feel like a new you and that’s a real good feeling, trust me.
