I was concerned about my thin hair

I was concerned about my thin hair

“The age of about 16 is the earliest point I can remember starting to be concerned about my thin hair

by Lesley W

My friends and I had just started to go out dancing and most of them had luscious long hair, whilst my hair would never grow beyond chin length before getting very wispy on the ends, so I resorted to buying curly ‘clip-in’ ponytails on a banana claw clip, and scraping what hair I did have into a tiny ponytail in order to clamp it to my head.

A few years followed wearing three-quarter and half wigs, which to be honest probably put too much strain on the little hair I did have. Then in my mid-twenties, I decided to spend some money trying to get my bio hair in as good a condition as I could, to see if it would grow and thicken up. I spent a fortune on hair products for many years, visiting trichologists and my GP, who both told me I had ‘female pattern baldness’. I was prescribed privately ‘Minoxidil’ but this just appeared to make my hair thicker and very dry whilst it was on my hair, but immediately I stopped using it, and my hair was the same, so seemed to me to be just another ‘thickening hair product’ but way more expensive.

A personal story of courage – I have come to terms with accepting female hair loss, but I have to say, it has felt like I’ve had to grieve over it. READ>

I gave myself a break from wearing hair pieces and wigs for several years, but then a comment was made by a man standing behind me at a dance event that I was bald from the back – like my male dance partner. He laughed, – I was mortified, so decided to start wearing ‘helper hair’ again.

My goodness what a fantastic surprise I had – wigs had improved so much in that ‘break time’. They had things such as ‘lace fronts, comfort bands, ear tabs, size adjusters’. Although I have such a peanut head, I have to alter the cap size of every wig I own, mostly, eventually, I get them to a state whereby nobody realises I’m wearing a wig. When asked by strangers where I get my hair done as it looks so fabulous, I’m proud to own up and tell them it’s a wig, just in case they, or someone they know, is struggling with hair loss, and to let them know, there is great help out there. I feel – no, I KNOW my wigs take years off me (now I have ‘old lady’ bio hair) and intend to wear them till my dying days – but maybe I will wear one just a bit more age-appropriate when I’m in my 80’s ?

‘The wig I’m wearing in this picture is Noriko Cameron in creamy blonde.’

  1. You look fabulous Leslie. I would never have looked at the Cameron
Wig only for seeing you in yours. Its definatly better on you than the Model. I have worn a Wig since 2006 after Chemo. I tell everyone I wear a Wig I get so many compliments & it’s helped People, as the relief on some of the Ladies is unbelievable
When they are worried about their Hair, they want to know were they can go to get a Wig they are so relieved to realise Wigs are now so good. We will be forever young in our Wigs.

  2. Love your story Lesley. I too take great pleasure in telling people I wear a wig when they compliment me on my hair. It’s unbelievable how many people have commented on my hair since I have been wearing a wig. Your wig looks fabulous so much so I might try that one myself. I wear the Dimples Molly wig which is an exact match of my own hair but a better version. Good luck to you xx

  3. Lesley, you look fab in Noriko’s Cameron. And the creamy blonde colour really suits you. I love reading the personal stories of other ladies’ wig journeys. It’s always very inspiring and informative for another wig wearer like me. And I really enjoy seeing photos. I especially like being told the name and the colour of the wig. I’m like you. I’m proud to tell others that I wear a wig. Just to get it out there to other women how realistic and fashionable today’s wigs are.

  4. You look fabulous. Very natural and style really suits you. I also tell anyone who admires my hair that it is a wig I’m wearing. It may just encourage someone to ‘join our club’ and help make their life better.

  5. Your story resonates with mine in so many ways. Keep wearing fashionable wigs for as long as you like age is no barrier, you look beautiful. Me I plan to age disgracefully no oldie styles for me either.
