A Barbie doll with no hair

A Barbie doll with no hair

We are delighted to see that Barbie Manufacturer Mattel, are launching a Barbie doll with no hair. They are hoping that the dolls will be available towards the end of the year, so they should be hitting our shelves, just in time for Christmas pressies.
Kim Culmone, the senior vice president of Mattel’s doll design, stated that children’s toys are a “reflection of culture” and that Mattel felt “it was time to create a doll line free of labels”.

It is so important for children with hairloss, to see themselves represented within everyday life. If a child has lost hair due to alopecia, chemo, a genetic condition – whatever the reason –  to be able to play with such a popular toy with no hair, will definitely help to promote feelings of inclusivity.

Mattel are leading the way by gradually adding to their Fashionista range. The Fashionista range includes a Barbie with vitiligo, aswell as a Barbie with a prosthetic limb. Even Ken has had a makeover. He no longer has cropped, coiffured hair, but there is the possibility to purchasing a more relaxed Ken with longer, blonde layers.
Mattel are striving to distance themselves from the Barbie dolls of days gone past, which were providing our youngsters with an unrealistic view of what they should look like.

From talking to our community, the common thread of thought, is how we view ourselves. Being able to accept ourselves with hair loss within society, is such a milestone. Here at Simply Wigs we applaud Mattel for creating the Fashionista range. Feeling included is such a powerful emotion and anything that helps not only our youngest, but us as adults, is welcomed with open arms.

  1. A Barbie with no hair will help encourage my mom. she recently got diagnosed with breast cancer and her hair is falling out and she dose not want to get up and go out in the community with no hair. my mom is beautiful with or without hair and a very kind and sweet person. This Barbie doll will make her day knowing she has a doll that is Beautiful jus like her in their own beautiful way.

  2. I am 50 and have lived with Alopecia for 38 years. It is beyond refreshing to see a Barbie doll with no hair! Back in the 1980’s & 1990’s, no hair meant oddness. Today, bald goes! There are so many girls who need to be able to identify & celebrate who they are! Bravo to Mattel for designing this doll!

  3. dear everyone all of you are beautiful and if people tell that you are not beautiful don’t listen to them they are just trying to hurt your feeling’s. not just some people are beautiful all of you if you have a good heart all of you are beautiful and be kind. and share all your kindness to people. love all of you. by Delilah Campos

  4. I would love the change to have a barbie with no hair for my beautiful 6 year old daughter that has been diagnosed with alopecia.
I have tried to but one for her as she has asked for one.
I think this is a very positive step forward, for anyone struggling with it.
It’s very difficult to have hard conversations but having a positive role model will certainly help.
Even if we do not get one, tha k you for all you are doing to promote differences ??

  5. Hi I am over the moon to see that finally a doll with Alopecia is available. I myself have Alopecia Universalis and my little Granddaughter who is turning two in November will not have anything to do with me because I am different. It is really heartbreaking for me as well as her parents who feel awful. But she just runs away crying so it has come down to me not visiting which is so very sad for us all. I just thought if we were able to purchase an Alopecia doll for her she may understand the condition and then come around to giving her heartbroken Nanny a cuddle and kiss. Thank you so very much for reading my request I am honoured.

  6. I am looking tirelessly for a barbie with no hair for my 4 year old granddaughter Amelia who on the 14th April this year was diagnosed with type AM leukaemia, and to make this awful devastating news even worse it is in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic, she loves her barbies so much and unfortunately she is loosing her beautiful hair and would love to give her a barbie who is just like she is now, please help.

  7. I would love to know when and where I can buy this doll. I have alopecia universalis and my daughter would love one.

  8. I would love to have this Barbie doll with no hair to surprise my daughter. My family and I were very happy to see this. We even thought before ever seeing this type of Barbie how neat it would be to help to normalize being different. My 10 year old daughter has Alopecia Areata and has lost all of her hair in the last 2 years. It grew back to a short length and we were hopeful, only to see her hair begin to fallout again. We haven’t been able to afford a wig yet so she wears hats. It’s been difficult to watch such a sweet girl go through this kind of challenge so young. She has really struggled with this condition. She feels like she isn’t “normal” and just strives to fit in. Kids make fun of her for something she has no control over. Wearing hats inside kids always poke fun or she’s had where kids take her hat off and run with it thinking it’s a game. We give her lots of positive reinforcement that she is beautiful just the ways she is, and that her hair is not what makes her beautiful. One day when she’s older I hope she advocates for kids going through the same. She absolutely loves Barbies, she likes to collect the ones that are different in any way. Her latest doll is one that is in a wheel chair. I can’t think of a better way to show her that she’s not alone in not having hair. What a good role model the bald Barbie doll will be for kids. Thank you for advocating for children with these type of obstacles in their life. I hope to see the lack of hair on any person to not be so unheard of- (living in a small town she is the only child dealing with this so she really feels insecure), I think this doll is going to be a beautiful thing. So thank you.

  9. I would love a bald Barbie to remind me how fabulous I can be with alopecia.

  10. I would love a doll for my little granddaughter Jessica as I have alopecia universalis and think it would be a great learning doll for her. Great idea, especially to show children it’s OK to be different.

  11. I would live one for my granddaughter Jessica as I have alopecia universalis, and think it would be a great learning doll for her.
