I decided it was time to try a wig

I decided it was time to try a wig

My name is Angela and I have been wearing a wig for about five years now, and these have been the best years of my life. I am 59 years old, but my story begins from when I was just a small child. I can still hear my dad say “Oh just cut it all off” as my Mum tried to comb out my fine matted hair. As a child I was often mistaken for a boy with my short, cropped hair. I desperately wanted long silky hair and continued in my quest to grow it.

I clearly remember being at my grandma’s, my precious Nana, whom I adored. I remember I wanted a bobbed hairstyle identical to the girl on the front cover of one of my annuals, Bunty 1972 I seem to remember.

My Mum did her best to recreate the style, but I was so disappointed when I looked in the mirror and saw my fine wispy flyaway hair floating around my head. My Mum said “Oh it will soon settle down” but of course it never did. There’s a photo of me around that time, wearing three pairs of my Mums tights on my head made into plaits topped off with a little cap. I never went out looking like this but at least at home, I could dream for a while. Throughout my life, I desperately wanted straight silky hair that would fall into place. Over the years I must have spent a small fortune on expensive hair products and treatments. The only time I liked my hair was when I walked out of the hair salon, but the next day as soon as I washed it, I was left with thin wavy hair that became increasingly damaged by my hair straighteners.

I worked as a nurse and one day a new nurse joined the ward team. I adored her hair and felt so envious. I was amazed when I found out she wore a wig due to alopecia. I think this was when the seed was planted in my head that a wig could be the answer to my prayers.

I was due to have some hair extensions put in, and on the day, I was so excited. I walked out of that salon after spending £600 and felt like crying.

My head felt so uncomfortable, and I didn’t like feeling the hair bonds through my thin hair. The next morning, I pulled out the extensions during my shower, it was such a relief to get rid of them, at least my cat enjoyed playing with them, very expensive toys indeed!!!! I decided it was time to try a wig, and fortunately near where I lived was a hair Salon where for a small fee would get in five different wigs for you to try. I choose four wigs out of the brochure and then spotted Embrace in Platinum Blonde which I loved the look of but didn’t think I could carry it off. the day for the fittings came and I walked out of that hair salon feeling amazing in my Embrace wig, I couldn’t believe how confident I felt. I was nervous walking into work the next day but all I received was compliments, one carer said I looked ten years younger, I felt like a totally different person, so much more confident and outgoing. I even found the courage to join the nursing bank so I could go and work on many different wards, something I would never have considered before.

I decided to shave off my wispy hair and embrace wearing a wig, it totally changed my life, and when I put on my wig in the morning, I feel I become the person that little girl so wanted to be.

  2. Thank You all so much Ladies for your gorgeous comments, they really do mean the world to me.
The wig I am wearing was called Sadie by Rene Of Paris, I adore this wig but sadly they stopped making it a couple of years ago. Thankfully I had a bit of a stockpile of them but they are getting tatty now so I’m on a mission to find another wig to fall in love with.
    With Love
    Angela Xx

  3. Thank you Angela – a really tough childhood but it certainly looks like you have cracked it now! You look fab I am one of those people havering about when I will have to start wearing a wig and love the one you are wearing in the photo – could you say which one it is and in what shade?

  4. I can’t believe how similar Angela’s story is to my own and it just goes to show how important our hair is to some of us for our overall confidence. I’d always battled my coarse wavy hair, which turned to frizz as soon as I stepped outdoors no matter how long I took with the straighteners, so when in my 40’s it also started thinning on top I made the momentous decision to try a wig and I’m so very glad I did as I’ve never looked back since. Angela looks fabulous and I’m glad that wigs have restored her confidence, just like they did for me xx

  5. I would never believe you were wearing a wig! I would love one like that. What is the name and which producer??

  6. Oh Angela, I feel like crying as I read your story, my hair story is almost identical…. I longed for thicker straighter hair all my life too and I also always dreamed oh having a thick blunt cut bob hairstyle…. I discovered Wigs 15 years ago at the age of 46 and have never looked back tho I’m still searching for my perfect style! Bless you for sharing this! X
