My name is Sue, and this is me. This is the story of my journey into wearing wigs.

The beginning of my hairloss journey
No matter what diet or slimming club I tried, I just couldn’t seem to lose weight. I’d always been slim until I reached forty, but then my weight just spiralled out of control and it was stopping me from living a normal life. So I took part of my pension in cash, to pay for a gastric sleeve operation.
Over the next two years, I lost the weight but also lost my hair. This was due to the severely restricted calorie intake. My GP couldn’t help and referred me to a dermatologist who recommended me for a wig. The first wig that I chose was the Winner, as it was almost like my hair had been. I wore it for social occasions, but I still stuck to ‘beanies’ (hats) most of the time.
It’s surprising how cold it is, without any hair!
I have a fringe of hair around the side and back of my head, so I still have to get it trimmed by my hairdresser. I found Simply Wigs on-line and since then, my life has changed. The hand-tied cap constructions are the most comfortable, which is why I now stick to these. I have now donated the ‘Winner’ to the brilliant Simply Wigs, Wig Bank.
My second wig (shown below) is the Ellen Wille Risk style, in the colour Silver Rooted. This style is so easy to wear, and certainly more glamorous than a woolly hat. The colour looks good in the summer with a tan, but I’m not so keen in the winter, as I’d always had dark hair and I didn’t feel happy being grey.
Everyone assures me it looks fantastic

I then decided to try a more youthful style and also to try a blonde shade. So with the Black Friday offer last year, I treated myself to Amore Rene of Paris Veronica, in creamy blonde. My hairdresser had to trim a little off the back, but I did struggle to get used to so much hair, after so many years without. It’s still not my favourite, although everyone assures me it looks fantastic.
Then Simply Wigs had a fabulous Easter offer and I decided to try the Ellen Wille Love Comfort. I chose a slightly darker blonde shade, Sandy Blonde Rooted. I haven’t the confidence to go back to brown, as I’m not sure how it’d suit me now I’m older. I love this wig. The slightly longer length is very feminine and flattering. This is me.
I always check the Fab Fridays and I was delighted to see that the Love Comfort was on special offer. After a complicated, but very useful conversation with the Simply Wigs Customer services team, I opted for the colour Sandy Blonde. This will be my winter wig, as I prefer a darker shade for the darker nights. Though it looks good in any season, I will still get some use of the lighter one too.
It’s as easy to put on as a woolly hat!
I investigated having a hair transplant, but I haven’t enough of my natural hair left to make it viable. I still aim to cover my head whenever I go out. Only friends and family are allowed to see me, without my wig or hat. My father had skin cancer on his head, so that makes me doubly careful. Last summer I wore a cotton hat in the summer when out walking the dogs, but that tended to blow off easily, so this year, I’ve been wearing my ‘Risk’. It’s as easy to put on as a woolly hat and looks good without any fancy styling!
I’ve recently decided to start saving for a human hair wig and I am really pleased that there are more human hairstyles available, in shorter styles. I can’t afford it this month, so I will have to wait for the next sale maybe? We’ll have to wait and see! It’s such a shame that your shop is at the other end of the country from me, as I’d love to visit in person!
You look great in all the styles that you have shown. Thank you for sharing your lovely wig story .
lovely story Sue. I have problem hair, Fine as a cobweb and very straight, if it is curld it goes frizzy and breaks off , in the wind its desaster.hair dressers are reluctant to touch it, so I snip the ends myself. Wearing a wig is the answer whch I have done for years I have had long ,curly and sraight, and real hair, I have tried them all.
Thank goodness for Simply Wigs. Their Choice is fantastic. Raquel Welch Breeze Honey Peacan is my favorite, I am often complimented on my lovely hair , and asked the secret of keeping it so nice. My wig is part of me, one day I might have to go Grey ,that could also be a Breeze
Thanks for this Sue. I always had long(ish) hair and had no trouble wearing it in its natural state until I started losing it after a long period of stress. I still have hair but my hairline has gone altogether.
I wear all manner of wigs from Simply Wigs (from the clearance sales mostly) it is my only indulgence and I love them. I let everyone know that I wear them in my small effort to make it as acceptable and normal as wearing spectacles.
I liked this story very much as it almost mirrors my own history . I had probably lost too much weight too fast for my age and although I had no procedure, like a gastric band I do have hypothyroidism. I too have come to the conclusion that Love by Ellen Willie is my best length -not too cropped but not a bob either .
