Cancer facts and figures show that in 2012 there was an estimated 14.1 million cancer cases worldwide. With this figure set to rise year upon year, the need to spread awareness and raise funds to support those suffering from this debilitating illness has never been more important. Held on the 4th February, World Cancer Day 2017 is an initiative created by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to help make an impact on a global scale.
This year’s campaign, #WeCanICan, centres on sport and encourages people around the world to be active in the fight against cancer. Whether individually or collectively, everyone is capable of participating in World Cancer Day and making a real difference.
World Cancer Day
Show your support on social media:
With statistics showing that over 2.34 billion people use social media every day, it is a great platform to spread messages and foster support. To get involved, it’s time to get creative. Whether you write it on your hands, a piece of paper or in the sand, upload a picture of you, your team or your club with the #WeCanICan hashtag. Spread the message as far as you can by sharing the picture across multiple networks, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, with the #WeCanICan and #WorldCancerDay hashtags included in your post.
In the run up to the day:
- Join the World Cancer Day Thunderclap campaign. If you sign up to be a part of this initiative, you are giving Thunderclap the permission to post a one-time message onto your social media account to try and promote and encourage support.
On the day:
- Change your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram profile pictures to one of the following World Cancer Day themed materials on the 4th
If you are new to social media and would like a helping hand to get involved, check out the World Cancer Day toolkit.
If you have, or are planning to organise an event to raise awareness and money for the cause, such as The Nags Charity Barbarians’s canoe challenge, add your activity to the World Cancer Day map of impact to engender a greater impact.
Any donations made to the World Cancer Day organisation will help to provide essential support to people, families and communities affected by cancer. If you would like to make a donation, no matter how large or small, the limit is unrestricted and you can pay using any major credit card or PayPal account.
If you would like to find out more about World Cancer Day and become a part of a worldwide community of support, check out the World Cancer Day website.

Wow! An awe inspiring article indeed. I’m neither on instragram or facebook but if you tell me how to post a donation I would certainly love to.
