Cutting a Wig: DIY or Visit the Salon?

Cutting a Wig: DIY or Visit the Salon?

You have just received your pretty little package in the post, unveiled your gorgeous new style and tried it on for the first time in the mirror. You love the feel, look and colour of your new wig but it feels a little bulky, or the side layers just don’t sit quite right around the face. Before your hurriedly type into Google “how to cut wig hair” and find some articles on how to do a little DIY on your new style, read this post and find out why it may be best to leave the cutting to the experts.

Can You Cut a Wig?

We are firm believers at Simply Wigs that if you feel you need to cut your wig, then it’s better to find a qualified stylist and have a trim. Unlike your natural hair, once your wig hair has been cut, it can’t grow back, so it’s best to leave it to the professionals on this one, and play around with different wig styling until you can get booked in at the salon.

How to Cut a Wig Shorter

Another good opportunity to consider having your wig trimmed is perhaps if you’ve had your wig a while and it’s starting to look a bit tired and worn, particularly with longer wigs. By cutting the wig into a new shorter style, you’ll be removing some of the dull-looking fibres, and instead, you’ll have a fresh-looking new style. Again, we always recommend leaving this to the professionals, rather than doing a DIY job at home.

Sometimes a wig can be absolutely gorgeous, but it just doesn’t suit your face shape and may need to be re-shaped. All it may need is a hairdresser or professional advising on how to alter the style ever so slightly so that it compliments your face shape perfectly. Either way, it is worth getting in touch with a professional and hearing their advice.

Cutting a Wig

If your wig does require a cut, we recommend that you do a bit of research beforehand, making sure you check whether the salon has experience in cutting wigs (you can usually find this out on the services page of their website, or by giving them a ring).

Other questions you may want to ask is if they have particular experience with a specific style of wig (human hair or fibre wigs for example) and how much they charge. Although many salons offer the same style and cut-price as with natural hair, some salons may charge a little extra. Many hairstylists tend to work slower with a wig as it requires immense attention to detail to get it just right. Try not to be put off by this as you deserve a style that has been created just for you.
