Lace front wigs have revolutionised natural style and sophistication with their innovative sheer lace front construction. A favourite amongst celebrities, lace front wigs offer endless styling options and benefits thanks to the undetectable hairline, which allows the wigs to be styled away from the face.
But how do you put on a lace wig? We take you through our expert tips on how to put on a lace front wig for beginners so you can step out with confidence!
How to Put on a Wig with a Lace Front
Any experienced wig wearers reading this article will know that putting on a wig is not as simple as pulling it over your head and heading out the door, so it will come as no surprise that wearing a wig with a lace front is no different. For beginners and wig-wearing veterans alike, here is our approach to applying a lace front wig, step-by-step:
Step 1: Choosing your wig
When you come to purchase your lace front wig, its length and style are undoubtedly going to be at the forefront of your mind, but it is important to consider whether you would prefer your wig to have pre-cut or uncut lace. Most of the lace styles available from Simply Wigs feature pre-cut lace, giving you one less thing to worry about when you come to install your lace front wig.
While pre-cut lace offers incredible convenience to the wearer, we appreciate that many members of our community value being able to tailor their wigs to their exact hairline and face shape, which is why we supply uncut styles on our site too! For the best results when trimming the excess lace from your wig, follow these simple steps:
Step 2: Concealing your hair
Before you put on a wig with a lace front, you need to flatten and secure your natural hair to your scalp to enhance the realism of your wig once it is applied. Attempting to wear a lace front wig without fixing your hair could result in the wig looking bulky while leaving your natural hairline exposed, so it is crucial to perform this step to achieve your desired look.
For women with longer natural hair, there are a couple of hair-concealing techniques we would recommend:
Braiding – Separate your hair into two long braids, then cross them over the top of your head to form a ‘Heidi braid’. Secure the braids in place using hairpins, hiding the end of each braid under the braid on the opposite side of your head.
Flat bun – Pull your hair into a ponytail at the back of your head, then twist it into a tight bun. Press the bun against your nape to flatten it, then pin it into place.
Concealing shorter hair is more straightforward. Simply slick your hair back, then pin it down with small kirby grips, inserting the grips in a crisscross pattern to maximise the hold. Applying a small amount of hair gel or a spritz of hairspray should similarly ensure that your hair stays firmly in place, but remember to allow either product to dry before continuing to the next step.
Step 3: Putting on your wig cap
Whether or not you decide to wear a wig cap is completely down to personal preference, although we find that people with sensitive scalps benefit from the layer of protection between them and their wig. That being said, there are many wig wearers who find wig caps to be a little hot and sweaty, preferring to give their scalp a bit of breathing space.
If you do want to wear a wig cap, putting it on is fairly easy:

Step 4: Putting on your lace front wig
With all of the groundwork complete, it is finally time to apply your lace front wig! Depending on the specific cap construction of your chosen wig, you may be able to put on your lace front wig without glue by adjusting the straps at the nape, tightening or loosening the grip until you find a comfortable fit.
For lace front wigs without adjustable straps, we recommend applying them to your hair or wig cap in one of the following ways:
Adhesive wig spray – Lightly spray along your hairline until a thin layer has formed. Wait for it to become clear, then put on your lace front wig and press it down around the edges.
Wig tape – Apply small strips of double-sided tape around your hairline, then press down the edges of your wig to secure it.

Good morning,
I am a guy and I bought a wig for men. It came with a piece of plain lace in front. it is flesh coloured. Am i supposed to hide it? or is it to be used ? At the moment it looks like a veil, It certainly doesn’t help the wig to look natural. shall I cut it off?
I have my thinning hair coloured so how can I be sure of a colour match with a bought wig?
