How do Wigs Stay on?

How do Wigs Stay on?

I get asked this question a lot and it’s so easy to answer How do wigs stay on?  I think when you’re new to wearing wigs you’re often concerned about how secure your wig is. In fact, my sister has unfortunately just lost her hair and joined the wonderful world of wigs, and this was the first question on her mind. I suppose at first you feel like you could lose it with a strong gust of wind and that the whole world is looking at you, but there’s a few things that you can do to ensure that your wig stays perfect all day.

How do wigs stay on? Let me show you . . .

Adjusting a wig

The simplest and most obvious method is adjusting the wig itself.  On some wigs you’ll find a tab on the side panels behind the ear. These stretchy pieces of elastic can be used to adjust the tightness of the wig for extra security. Once your have worn your wig a few times these can become loose, so just double check and adjust in the morning before you start your day.

Wear a Wig Cap

wig-capFor me, a wig cap is a must have! I have small tufts of hair on my head and I prefer to secure these by wearing a wig cap. Plus, I also find that wearing a wig cap stops my wig from slipping making me feel confident that my wig is secure.  Although you might feel silly wearing one, they are super comfortable and can actually protect your scalp if it’s particularly sensitive and you have little hair. Wig caps come in different colours according to the colour of your wig. This is especially useful for monofilament wigs which mimic the scalp, so if you change your hair colour daily like I do, make sure you have a few wig caps spare!  You can find a great collection of wig caps that suit every scalp.

Stay Secure with Wig Tape

I’m not a massive wig tape user for every day, however I’ve mentioned before that wig tape or adhesive works really well with lace front wigs. I have a couple of lace front wigs and it just gives me confidence knowing that I’m extra secure and no one can tell the difference! I recommend using Ultra Hold Minis Wig Tape, they’re pre-cut in to handy curved tabs and are really easy to use. The way I describe it is like double-sided sticky tape!  I tend to place a piece of wig tape behind each ear and on the front edges of the wig. Once in place, peel back the blue paper and continue to wear your wig normally, ensuring no loose ends of hair get caught on the sticky side of the tape.

My conclusion . . .

All of the above methods are simple and effective, but it’s down to personal preference and what feels most comfortable for you. Everyone is different and remember you might want to change what method you use depending on the wig you’re wearing or even your lifestyle. If you know you’re going to be out with girls dancing the night away, you might want to use an extra bit of tape to avoid any drunken mishaps after one too many hair flicks – better yet just pop some in your bag and double it up as body tape for those fashion emergencies! To be honest, I rarely use adhesives or any other methods to secure my wig, as I often find the wig itself has a secure fit and hold, but it’s useful to know your options!

  1. Hello, I wear short hair wigs and nylon wig caps. I have partial hair thinning in the back of my head, which is the reason I wear wigs. However, I am going through menopause and I get too hot with my cap and wigs on, and when it gets warm, I would like to strengthen my own hair, so I don’t have to wear a wig that much. Would you recommend nioxin and possibly a hair cut to shape my hair?

  2. Hi Steph

    Thanks for your tips again!
I have very fine hair which I’ve noticed recently little strands of hair are starting to show below my wig and ‘giving the show away’ so I’ve just started to wear a bamboo type wig cap which I find very comfortable – – can’t possibly be made from Bamboo can it? Anyway Steph, my question is…… Once the cap is in place, does the wig edges sit directly on top of the cap edges or just below it? does the wig still have to make contact with the skin?, it feels more comfortable ontop of the cap but has it the same security? hopefully you can understand what I’m getting at.

    Many thanks Kath
