Five Things to Consider Before Buying Hair Toppers

Five Things to Consider Before Buying Hair Toppers

If you’re looking for some extra volume to cover up certain areas of your hair that may be thinning, a hair topper can be the perfect solution to providing a gorgeous and natural transformation. With a lovely and extensive range available, choosing a hair topper could be nerve-wracking, but this guide will talk you through five steps to help you through the process.

Five Steps to Buying Hair Toppers

1. Determine Your Type of Hair Loss

The type of hair loss that you are experiencing is a large factor to consider in your journey to finding the perfect hair topper for you.

If you have thin or fine hair or are experiencing the first stages of hair loss at the crown and parting area, women’s top pieces will hide this well. This wonderful solution blends into your own hair to create an effortlessly natural look.

If you are experiencing thinning or hair loss at the front hairline or temples, clip-in fringes work their magic to add volume and increase your confidence. These fringes suit both short and long hair whilst staying secure throughout your busy day.

There is a common misconception that a full wig is the only option to hide complete hair loss. However, this is not the case. Full head hairpieces are available and easy to use, providing a good alternative to a full wig. Simply placing the hairband or hairpiece over your head is as much effort as is required with this hair topper. The hairpiece will settle naturally, and you can wear a hat, turban, or scarf to make it look like your own hair – a great option for those who do not wish to opt for a full wig.

2. Fibre or Human Hair

With fibre toppers, you have the option to choose a hair enhancer that is already fabulously styled. Whether you fancy curls, waves or a sleek straight look, with a fibre hair topper the world is your oyster. You don’t have to worry about the weather ruining your hairpiece either, as it will hold its style whatever the weather.

It goes without saying that human hair toppers come with all of the pros and cons that your own hair would have. These toppers react to weather and require a little more upkeep with washing and styling. However, using human hair means that they offer an incredibly natural finish. Owners of a human hair topper must be careful styling, though, as overexposure to heat can damage the topper just like it would your own hair. Human hair toppers tend to be more expensive than a fibre hairpiece, but it is definitely worth the investment if it is the right one for you.

3. Hair Length

Whether you opt for a similar style and length to your natural locks or opt for an ultimate hair fantasy, there are varying lengths of hair toppers available for you to choose from. The length of topper that you are looking for is important in determining which one is right for you. You can choose short and sassy hair toppers, mid-length hair toppers, and long and luscious hairpieces.

4. Choosing Your Colour

As most wig toppers are chosen to blend with your own hair, choosing a colour that closely matches your natural hair colour is important. Human hair toppers can be hard to match exactly, but because there are so many gorgeous colours, highlights and lowlights to choose from, you should be able to find the perfect colour match. Fibre hairpieces can be any colour under the sun! Whether a natural colour is your preference or something really ‘out there’, you are not limited when choosing a fibre hair topper.

Some wearers also choose their topper colour and dye the rest of their existing hair accordingly. This is great if you have fallen in love with a colour that doesn’t quite match up with your natural tresses, but if your hair is vulnerable remember to seek professional advice.

5. Select Your Base

The type of base that you choose should be determined largely by the location of your hair loss. There are two bases available, monofilament and wefted. A monofilament base is constructed of individually attached hairs to a soft meshing. This gives the illusion that the hair growing naturally from the scalp. Hair toppers with this base are particularly good if you are suffering from severe or total hair loss. These caps are known for their comfort and for being easy to style however you desire.

wefted base is different as it features rows (wefts) of hair. With this type of base, you can pull any of your own hair between the wefts. This integrates your own hair with the hairpiece, creating a natural look. A wefted base provides good air ventilation due to the open wefts, ensuring cooling comfort throughout the day.

Do Hair Toppers Damage Hair?

We know that sometimes, people hold back from hair toppers and ask us, ‘are hair toppers bad for your hair?’. In short, no. Hair toppers are completely safe and a great way to disguise hair loss or try a new look!

However, while hair toppers are not bad for your hair, using them improperly is. Luckily, using them correctly is easy! To avoid damage from wearing hair toppers:

Buy a good-quality topper – poor quality will not only look unnatural, but the clips may put undue pressure on your hair. A great place to start is searching for hair topper reviews in the UK to hear what others in the community have to say.

When applying or removing the topper, be slow and gentle – if you feel any stress on your natural hair, stop and try a different way.

For hair thinning or loss, ensure that your topper is large enough to not only cover the desired area but extends over fuller, healthier hair so that you aren’t clipping it into already weak hair.

If you are using the topper to cover a bald spot, give yourself about an inch around it to reach that healthier hair.

If your hair already has damage, it may be best to avoid hair toppers that clip in. Hair toppers can do damage to hair that isn’t able to cope with the added pressure.

Give your hair breaks – try to avoid sleeping in your topper, and, especially if you are wearing it frequently, try to take it out at the end of the day to give your hair a chance to recuperate. The constant pressure is what could cause damage.

If you follow these guidelines and any instructions that come with your topper, you can rock your topper and embrace the new looks open to you! You can learn more about hair extensions and hair loss on our previous blog post.

  2. My hair may be thinning from age but i haven’t noticed but I have moved to a new climate Southern Arizona and my hair looks terrible it’s short and I’m just sad. Id love to try a topper. Can I have my Gal cut it into a Bob I haven’t found any a-line type is that also what a Bob is called anyway I used to get a complaint everyday and now nothing I just had the most beautiful cut and wavy curly hair Not to sound in love with myself but I was with my hair And 3 days later no washing it looked even better I’m just sad.
I have had a cerebral aneurysm so my right side is a bit different and bounce mastectomy But it not what bothers me

  3. What should the life span of a human hair topper be. I bought two very expensive toppers a year apart from a very popular company. The first one 7”-9”. After 16 months hair was falling out. Now I didn’t wear it every day & my hairdresser who has been in business for 40 years and deals with hair pieces. My hairdresser washed and styled it only. He and owner had met and they were on same page. I recently saw her at a show and brought the topper to her, she said they are only good for 9-12 months. ? Now I have bought 2 toppers from her which totals $1700. The second one just made a year and is so far holding up. No where on her site or at her shows does she say that. My hairdresser said she doesn’t want to warranty her products. What are your thoughts? I am so disappointed because they have changed my life due to balding spots and thinning of hair. ?
