How to Get The Perfect Eyebrow Shape

steph

If you’ve read my most recent blog post about hair loss and bullying, you’ll probably understand why I’ve decided to do a blog post explaining how to get the perfect eyebrow shape.

When you lose your hair, you almost feel as though you lose a really important part of yourself, and it can be really difficult to start rebuilding your confidence. For me, brows are an important part of my look because they give my face some shape and structure, which helps me to feel ‘me’. This is where learning how to get the right eyebrow shape comes in.

Now, a few of you might already know that I’m also a makeup artist. So, I thought I could run through a few different tips on how to draw on eyebrows without hair, which brow shape to choose based on your face shape, and also recommend some of my favourite products – including false eyebrows!

How to Get The Perfect Brow Shape

Whether you have big fluffy brows, a few fair hairs or no brows at all, we can all learn how to get the right eyebrow shape. Now, the product you use to draw on or shape your brows really is down to personal preference and what kind of look you’re hoping to achieve. We’ve made a few recommendations in our next section, based on achieving different styles if you need some guidance on this.

When drawing on/creating the shape or filling in your brows, remember:

ONE

The start of your eyebrow should always be in line with the tip of your nose.

TWO

The arch of your eyebrow should run directly through or slightly under your pupil when you’re looking straight ahead.

THREE

Then the tail of your brow should line up with the outer corner of your eye.

Top tip: Following these tips on how to draw eyebrows on with no hair should help you find some pretty good symmetry. But, before going straight in with your product, I’d suggest just making a small mark at each of the three points so that you can join them together. Creating the outline of the brow shape first then filling them in after is a great method for beginners.

If you’re really struggling to nail the shape, then I’d perhaps advise shopping around for an eyebrow stencil – these are ideal for everyday use and perfect for beginners as you can just brush powder over the top of them.

Filling In Your Brows

Once you’ve outlined your perfect brow shape, it’s time to add the finishing touch by filling in the shape. Filling in the gaps with light strokes of powder is the quickest and easiest way to finish off your brows. However, if your eyebrows are a thin shape, then you may prefer to do this with a pencil, to avoid any fallout or from the powder blurring any shape lines. Either way, the amount of product you use is up to you, depending on whether you prefer a bolder or softer brow. If you are using powder, be sure to use a thin makeup brush (specifically one for eyebrows if possible) so placement can be accurate.

How to Draw on Eyebrows with No Hair

Soft & Natural

If I want a nice soft and natural-looking brow, I’ll usually opt for a pencil. When choosing your eyebrow pencil, I’d suggest looking for a mechanical pencil with a fine nib – these are usually called micro eyebrow pencils. I say this because the fine tip of the pencil allows you to mimic hair strokes. This works particularly well if you already have some eyebrows to begin with because you’re essentially just filling in the gaps and thickening up the hairs.

Bold Brows

If you’re into your Scouse brows or you want to really define and shape your brows, a pomade is a good, long-lasting option. I find these last all day, in fact, they tend to be smudge and sweat-proof! To use a pomade, you ideally want to use a fine angle brush so that you can neatly draw on your brows. I’d still suggest using small strokes when applying so that they look realistic. This is an option I use a lot because one of my eyebrows are very, very sparse, so sometimes a pencil job doesn’t quite do the trick. But, that said, you can always mix your products – using a pomade for the arch and tail of the brow but a pencil for the centre so that you mimic the hair strokes and create an Ombre look.

Other Options

False eyebrows

Another option that you might want to explore and that might save you some serious time is investing in some false eyebrows from Simply Wigs. They’re available in all colours to match your hair or wig colour, and they’re seriously the perfect solution to give you back beautiful brows, quickly! Simply Wigs has two ranges of false eyebrows – personally, the Dimples stick-on eyebrows are my favourites as they’re made from human hair, so they look super natural and effortless. All you need to do is use a thin layer of brow glue, and apply to your face, ensuring that your skin is clean and dry. You should be able to wear them for a couple of days at a time and (like anything) if you look after them properly, you should hopefully get about four months of use.

For more information on artificial eyebrows, please read our guide to buying false eyebrows.

Microblading

Microblading is a more permanent solution for perfecting your eyebrows, and it is more costly. However, it’s a great solution, particularly if you’re fed up with drawing on your brows every day, and you’d prefer a more natural look. If you’re not familiar with microblading, it’s a popular procedure. It is a form of semi-permanent make-up in which individual hair strokes are drawn on with cosmetic tattoo pigment. This can last anywhere between one and three years, but usually, you’d require a top-up in about 12 months.

I personally have not had this done, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not interested. I’m currently waiting instead for my powdered tattoo brows to fade so that I can invest in some fresh new microbladed brows.

How to Get the Best Eyebrows for Your Face Shape

Round face:

An arched eyebrow shape can give more structure and elongate round faces.

Top tip for how to get arched brows: We’ve already established that the arch of your eyebrow should run directly through or slightly under your pupil when you’re looking straight ahead. To emphasise an arch, you can make it sharper by adding concealer on the skin just under and on top of the arch. Alternatively, if you’re feeling confident, you could use a slightly darker coloured product on the arch of the brow to really sharpen and emphasise it.

Square face:

Arched eyebrows can also complement a square face but perhaps opt for a softer arch that will in turn help to soften the angles of the face. Fuller brows are also a great way to add a little bit of depth and create a stand out feature on a square-shaped face.

Oval face:

When it comes to achieving the perfect brows for your face shape, those with oval face shapes are very lucky as they tend to suit the majority of eyebrow shapes. I recommend following your natural brow shape as much a possible, adding in a slight arch to add a little bit of shape and create dimension to your face.

Long face:

To flatter a long shape face, you want to create more width, so be sure to avoid high and sharp arches. Instead, try and flatten the brow line, and opt for a slight arch with an elongated curve down towards the end of the brow.

How to Get a Perfect Brow Colour

Know you know how to get the best eyebrows based on your face shape, it’s time to discuss which colour to pick for your brows. The eyebrow colour you choose to go for is entirely up to you. Depending on your style, you may want to make a bold statement and choice a colour that’s very different from your natural hair. Or, you may prefer the natural look. If that’s the case, I suggest a colour that’s one to two shades darker than your natural hair colour, particularly if you have very little or no eyebrow hair, so that they look as natural as possible. If you’re opting for some fabulous false eyebrows, we recommended using the one to two shades lighter guideline too.

If you have red hair and are unsure of what colour to choose for your brows, try a light brown colour to start then you can decide if you would prefer to go lighter or darker depending on personal preference.

Using powder, either on its own or on top of a pencil, can be a great colour corrector if you think your base product colour isn’t quite right, or you would like to add more depth to the colour. Remember, if you’re unsure, it’s always better to start applying the colour lightly at first!

Hopefully, I’ve outlined a few options for everyone on how to get a perfect brow. Regardless of hair loss, perfecting the art of eyebrows is a tough task and we could all do with some advice every now and again.

  1. Im the biggest buzz when it comes to needles etc but No it doesn’t hurt. You have emla cream on it to freeze the area and it can be renewed if it wears off although in my experience it stays frozen for the whole treatment. You usually have two applications for the price 6 weeks apart. I had my final application in January 2018 ( as above) and they are still fine in April 2021. I will probably have them done again this winter as it’s better to have the line still visible rather than having to make new eyebrows from scratch as was my case initially. Take the plunge- they will look fab x

  2. Does microbladeing hurt I’m a wuss but have no confidence with really sparse eyebrows not much left thanks

  3. An encouraging review. I have been contemplating getting micro blading done and this has helped. I am also 64. Thank you.

  4. I never bothered with eyebrows before i lost all my hair (14 years ago) but started to draw them on as I looked like a ghost with no eyebrows or lashes. I have tried many different products including tattooing . Just before Christmas I invested in mibcroblading. It’s so so much better and more realistic than tattoo. When you look closely you can see the hairs!! I am older so didn’t have them too thick or dark. But they look so good. I sometimes darken them if I’m fully made up but they look so normal for a lady my age (64) for every day without any enhancement . Another tip for older ladies with no eyelashes either. use an creamy eye shadow pencil and then draw a line across your eyelash line and inner eye in a darker shade instead of eyeliner which is a bit harsh for older ladies

  5. This blog on eyebrows was interesting and informative as I have always had trouble getting a reasonable shape.
