How to Defrizz Your Wig

How to Defrizz Your Wig

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned wig wearer, knowing how to defrizz a wig is vital when it comes to proper wig care. For many of us, frizzy wigs are a pain because they can look unkempt, dull and even unclean. As a result, we feel less confident and less comfortable when styling our wigs. You may not even want to put them on at all!

In this blog post, we’re going to walk you through how to defrizz your wig properly. Whether you’re looking to defrizz a synthetic wig or a human hair wig, we’ve got you covered.

Defrizz Synthetic Wig

Why do synthetic wigs get frizzy?

Over time, it’s common for synthetic wigs to adopt some frizz. This is because synthetic wigs are made from man-made fibres which can lose their shape and produce static electricity (or static cling)

How to defrizz a synthetic wig:

01.

Using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, gently comb through your synthetic wig to remove as many tangles and knots as possible. It’s important to be gentle here as not to cause any breakages.

02.

Bring your wig to the sink or bathtub and use cold or lukewarm water to rinse through the hair. Ensure that the water is running in the direction of the hair to avoid generating more tangles.

Top Tip: Using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers is especially important if you have a curly wig. Normal combs and hairbrushes can damage the curls and cause even more frizz. If you have a curly wig, read our curly wig care guide for extra guidance.
03.

Apply synthetic wig-friendly shampoo, and gently work it through your wig in a downwards motion. Then, completely rinse out the shampoo to avoid build-up and future damage.

04.

Repeat step three with a synthetic wig-friendly conditioner, using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to work it through the hair. generating more tangles.

Some of our favourite synthetic wig-friendly shampoos include the Jon Renau Wig Shampoo and the Ellen Wille Synthetic Shampoo.
05.

Once you’ve rinsed all the product out of your wig, pat dry the hair with a towel. If you’re worried about your synthetic wig looking overly shiny, our guide to removing synthetic wig shine will help you solve this problem in no time.

06.

Place your synthetic wig on a wig stand so that it can air dry. If you have a heat-friendly synthetic wig, you can use a blow dryer on a low-temperature setting to dry and smooth your hair.

Bonus tips for synthetic wigs – from our clients.

1] Fabric softener dryer sheets are great for calming static fibres. Just gently rub a sheet down your wig, following the direction of the hair, to smooth down any flyaways before you head out the door.

2] For another quick fix to defrizz your synthetic wig, use a conditioning spray. Place your wig on a wig stand and lightly spray your wig, avoiding the crown area. Take a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and brush the product through your wig. Then, take some mousse or cream, such as the Piece out Contour Fiber Crème from Jon Renau, and apply it to the ends of the hairs to lock in moisture and further remove frizz.

Defrizz Human Hair Wig

Why do human hair wigs get frizzy?

Unlike your natural hair, human hair wigs do not benefit from the natural moisture and oils that your scalp produces. As a result, over time, human hair wigs can become dry, damaged and frizzy.

How to defrizz a human hair wig:

01.

Place your wig on a wig stand, section out the hair, and gently brush through your wig to remove knots and tangles. Make sure to use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to prevent further breakages.

02.

Rinse your human hair wig using cool or lukewarm water before applying a human hair wig-friendly shampoo to cleanse the wig.

At Simply Wigs, we love the Crème Shampoo from Gisela Mayer for a beautifully fresh scent and the Argan Smooth Luxury Shampoo from Jon Renau for extra soft locks.
03.

Rinse your shampoo out properly to avoid product build-up. Next, apply a human hair wig-friendly conditioner to your wig before rinsing again.

04.

Pop your wig on a wig stand. Then, mix some of the Jon Renau Argan Luxury Smooth Conditioner with a few sprays of the Jon Renau Argan Smooth Treatment Mist in your hands. These products work together amazingly and give your wig a nourishing treatment. Lightly work the mixture into your wig, focusing on especially frizzy areas and avoiding the crown.

05.

Cover your wig with a shower cap for extra nourishment. The plastic shower cap will trap heat which helps the conditioning treatment to moisturise your human hair wig thoroughly.

06.

Blow-dry your wig (using a low heat setting) as it sits under the shower cap. This should only take a couple of minutes.

07.

Using cold water, rinse the product out of your wig before gently squeezing it dry.

08.

Place your human hair wig back on your wig stand to allow for air drying. Letting your wig air dry is the best way to prevent further damage and frizz. However, if you want to style your wig or are in a hurry, you can also use heat tools on low-temperature settings.

That’s It.
