How to spot a wig

How to spot a wig

We are so lucky that the wigs available nowadays, look incredibly natural and truly realistic.
Here at Simply Wigs HQ, we strive for our customers to look good & most importantly to feel good about themselves.

My name is Emma and recently whilst I was consulting, I found that I was being asked more and more, am I able to spot a wig? There is no concrete answer here, as each individual person looks completely different. Even when they have the same wig on. In answer to these questions though, I thought I would put pen to paper and write down some pointers which may be food for thought.

Spotting The Signs:

First wig give away: Too perfect

If a wig looks too perfect, it can look wiggy.  When you receive your wig and take it from the box, shake it. Then shake it again. And then shake it again. Take a look at the fabulous video that Lizzie did, which explains what to do when you take your wig out of the box, for the first time. Wigs will look fabulous if you have tweaked them to suit your own particular features. Do not be scared of styling it behind your ears, or perhaps popping a kirby grip in at the side. Play around with your style with your fingers, until you feel comfortable with your look. You can not break a wig. (You can though frazzle it if you use heat on a synthetic style, so possibly you could break it in that sense!). It never fails to surprise and delight me, how the same wig can look completely different on different customers. Do not be afraid of making the wig ‘your own’.

Second wig give away: You dare not move your head

Wearing wigs is not just about how you style your look, but also how you ‘wear it’. By ‘wear it’ I mean, how you hold yourself when wearing a wig. If you hold your head in an unnaturally rigid position, it will look wooden. If you are holding yourself in a stiff position because you are scared it is not secure, then call our offices and we can chat through any concerns that you may have about security. You should feel comfortable in your wig and be able to move your head without any fear of it moving. If you do not feel confident, it may be to do with sizing. Call us here at SW and we will do our best to help & advice.

Third wig give away: Too much volume

All of our collections have wigs which vary in density. We speak to lots of customers every day, and one of the main concerns is that some of the wigs have too much hair. Our advice is to look at the Hand Tied wigs. These wigs have a lower density, than wefted wigs and will not look as if you suddenly have masses of hair. As each knot has been individually hand tied, they will move more naturally aswell.

Our philosophy here at SW, is not to settle for a wig that you do not feel comfortable with. Our team firmly believe that there is a style out there for everybody. A style which you will feel relaxed with. Wigs are advancing all of the time, so if you are not wearing your dream style, then contact our expert team and we will do our very best to find you, your look for 2017.

Be and feel fabulous.

  1. Also, in the case of a synthetic wig, a high unnatural shine can be a giveaway. I spray dry shampoo over a new wig and brush it out a few times, then add hair-spray when I am wearing it. This removes a lot of the artificial shine and makes it look much more natural.

  2. I have the same problem ever since I moved to India the humidity makes my hair flat too so I just for the first time ordered a wig and am gonna wear it whenever I go out which is rare in India and it is also close to my hair style too so glad somebody had the same thought stay blessed

  3. Have you tried the Revlon Spencer? I have been wearing it for years, now. Even a hairdresser didn’t realise that I was wearing a wig! It is not too thick, or heavy and has a very natural parting.

  4. I received my wig today , I’m so pleased with it, I shall recommend simply wigs not only for a fabulous product , a really good price &quick delivery , customer service very informative, I can’t wait to show it off.

  5. I am a alopecia sufferer and have been since the age of 25 ????I am always looking for on trend Styles I am 50 this year but like to keep on trend with something not to long shoulder length I have a good hairdresser who cuts into them any advice much appreciated monofilament only pls xx

  6. The hair pieces are fabulous and the colour match is perfect. Only those who know me well know this is a hair piece because they are aware of my short hair.

  7. I agree with too perfect and too much hair. Another sign is
too much volume on top. Or old-fashioned styles that have
gone out of style ages ago.

  8. I wore my wig to my sons wedding in Ibiza in September,I lost count of how many people commented on how great my hair looked.Very close to my own style but my own hair goes flat as a pancake in heat,my wig never altered, love it!

  9. Everybody tells me how natural my wig looks and are quite surprised when I tell them I am wearing a wig . I’ve worn the winner wig for 2 years now And I think the secret is its very close to my original style and I feel so comfortable with it, also having such a great company to buy them from and have great customer service and are so helpful is immensely pleasing too.

  10. Interesting read, “too much hair” is something that concerns me especially as I get older.
I currently wear the Jackson by Noriko and love it, have worn the style for 3 years and have searched for that style and my colour in something less dense, but as yet not found one..
Having said that friends think it is my own hair and ask me where I get it done, what shampoo do I use etc. I suppose it does not get better than that. So it must still work for me.
QUESTION in the photo at the start of this blog post, are they all wearing wigs? and if so can you name them? especially second from the left.

  11. I love this article! I totally agree, it is how we often view it and react that can be what is a give away!x
    I love this article x thanks emma! ???? X x x x

  12. Fabulous advice…such a great Company so glad I found you when I lost my hair….Thank you Sallie x

  13. I agree with all of these. I do think wearing a wig with confidence comes with time though too. When I started wearing one I was nervous everyone would know so if anyone complimented my hair I would reply “thanks, it’s a wig”. I thought it best I point it out before they did. Now I know they were genuinely commenting on my hair. Everyone at work now knows I wear one. The receptionist looks out for my Simply Wigs deliveries and everyone wants to ooh and ah at my latest look. Other women are jealous I have the choice so my advice is wear it with confidence from day one. If you follow the advice in this post, you’ll look fabulous!!

  14. Often the wearer’s fault, like me. I tend to wear it too far forward, much more than a normal hairline.
