You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers
In this blog, our fabulous community have given you the answer to any questions you may have as you embark upon your wig wearing journey. We know that it can be intimidating and strange, not knowing where to start, but hearing from our seasoned wig wearers just may be the perfect guide offering honest advice, real-life tips, and reassurance every step of the way. From choosing your first wig to styling, caring for it, and building confidence, their experiences are here to remind you that you’re not alone, and that with the right support, wearing a wig can become not just easy, but empowering.
1. Starter Help With Wigs
There are so many styles, fibres, cap constructions and colours, so knowing where to begin can be daunting. We recommend that you start by measuring your head as this will give you a better guide on what size will fit you best. Hopefully this can take away some uncertainty.
We asked our community what they wish they’d known when they just started their wig-wearing journey and whether they have any tips on wearing a wig for beginners.
“Measure your head. If your head is small (51cm-54cm), buy a petite wig. It should fit and look better. Also, a velvet wig grip is very useful if your wig feels as if it is slipping off, as it provides more security.”
“Look for a wig as close to your own style and colour as possible. Handtied wigs are lower density, so if you’re not wanting too much hair all at once, this is the cap for you. You will soon gain experience and start to enjoy wig wearing!”
“Visit a wig shop if possible, and try on as many wigs as you can. Always use a wig stand when you’re not wearing it or pop it back into a hairnet to keep its shape before putting it away.”
“First thing to say is that hair loss is a very emotional thing. It’s grief that shouldn’t be minimised by anyone, so my advice is to ‘feel it’. All the emotions that come with it, it’s all valid. It’s not just hair, it’s loss of your identity (at least for a while), confidence, and how you go about life. Don’t compare yourself to others (with or without hair loss) either, as we are all on our personal journey. It’s ok to not be ready to wear a wig, and it’s ok to wear alternative hair straight away. It’s your life, your choices. For me; wigs worked. For you it might be a topper, a hat or a shaved head. If you want to try wigs, go for a consultation. Try on different styles, colours, different cap constructions to see what works for you. X”
2. Research the Best Wig Brands and Types
It’s important to make sure that with whichever wig you’re purchasing, it suits your lifestyle. From the different types of fibre to the cap construction, ensure that you have done research to look after your new wig to prolong its lifespan.
Our wig community have shared their best wig maintenance tips below:
“Check reviews online for style & colour as stock photos can be misleading. Always check the return policy & company reviews as there are many scam sites preying on vulnerable people.”
“If you choose heat-friendly wigs, take the time to watch tutorials on how to restyle them properly after applying heat, and make sure you use the correct cleaning and care products.”
“I tried a few, till I found the right one. I checked out the customers photos and they really helped guide me in the right direction. I think a shaded root looked more natural and also opted for a lace front where it looks like the individual hairs are growing from your head. I personally did not like the idea of human hair, so all my choices were synthetic, but with heat resistance for styling. Most wigs I chose seemed a bit too thick and I asked my hairdresser if she could thin it out and make it look like my own hair style. I was so pleased, she cut it to suit and has done all my others too. I usually put grips in which helps to make the hair look more natural and less perfect, I do think if the hair is too precise it looks more wig-like.”
3. Tips on Styling Wigs for Comfort
Comfort is the number one key to your confidence, so make sure you have the correct size and cap construction to suit your needs! Style and colour is also really important, as they allow you to enhance your features, and feel like the best version of yourself.
Our fabulous community have some brilliant tips to help you feel comfortable in your new look.
“Wear your wig around the house before you go out for the first time. I would also wash it first to help reduce the shine a bit. Look at yourself in the mirror and get to know how your new wig looks on you. If you try to like yourself in your new look before you go out in public, it will help a bunch!”
“You will be nervous and think people will know it’s a wig, they really won’t! Once you get used to wearing them, it changes your life. No more bad hair days! I think the most important thing is don’t just wear it straight out of the box, address styling products, texturizers and sprays to make it feel like your own.”
“It can be daunting and strange at first, and you may feel you don’t want others to know you’re wearing a wig. Pick a style that you feel comfortable in, and remember the wig can be styled to what you want: by a trim, adding a fringe, reshaping, or thinning it out if it feels like too much hair.”
“I would say have patience, perseverance, and curiosity. Patience to know that it takes time to get used to the feeling of wearing a wig, but you do get used to it. Perseverance when you are trying to find a style for you and maybe the first one isn’t quite right. Curiosity to learn and embrace the whole process. I haven’t looked back.”
4. Tips on Styling Wigs for Confidence
Once you’re beginning to feel comfortable in your wig, it’s a lot easier to find confidence. Whether your new locks look similar to your natural hair or you make your new hair your entire personality, you can rock whatever style makes you feel like you.
See how our community has rebuilt their confidence while wearing wigs.
“Wearing a wig when I lost my hair made me feel fantastic. If anyone complimented me on my hair, I would tell them it was a wig and they would be shocked, so it became a great talking point. I was very lucky to find a wig that was just a much better version of my own hair. Wigs are the best thing when you aren’t feeling your best and they completely boost your mood.”
“The only person that notices you wear a wig is you. I was so highly sensitive and my inner self believed that everyone I saw would know it was a wig. The older I got, the more I saw it was me who saw me. Everyone else is too busy in their own world to notice anything. Sow ear it with pride and hold your head up high.”
Take a deep breath, put on your new wig and get out there. You may look a little different but you will look great. Have confidence, even though you will feel self-conscious at first. The feeling will fade quickly and you’ll be surprised how many of your friends, family, and colleagues will be supportive and, on many occasions, envious.”
“My main worry as a new wig wearer was that everyone, wherever I went, would know that I was wearing a wig. My own hair was very thin and I felt that my wig shone out like a beacon on my head. I am pleased to say that no one in the supermarket stared at my hair, no one in the street stared at me. Nobody was interested in my beautiful hair, they all assumed I was fresh out of the hairdresser’s chair. I told all my friends when I first met up with them in my wig and they said it looked lovely, and then just carried on a normal conversation. They didn’t start staring at my hair or anything. Just buy it, wear it, and be happy.”
5. Tips on Styling and Securing Wig
Now you have your gorgeous new style and you’re feeling confident and amazing, how do you keep it on? There are a few different ways for you to feel you wig is secure: wig tape, a wig grips and clips, or even as simple as bobby pins. Here, our wig community reveal some of their basic wig styling tips for beginners
“I wish I’d know about wig tape sooner, especially for those windy days when I disliked being outside. It boosts my confidence now in all sorts of situations. I used to worry when people hugged me that it would dislodge my hair.”
“Remove any facial moisturiser, serum or oil from the area where your wig will sit, as any tape or spray won’t correctly adhere and will be ineffective in securing your wig.”
“Make sure your wig is in place and secure by wearing a band underneath that guarantees that your wig will not move or blow off in high winds. In my opinion, this gives you the satisfaction and in turn gives you all the confidence you need.”
“The first time I wore a wig outside, I felt self conscious and that everyone knew it was a wig. This was partly due to the fact that I could feel it moving about and it was not secure. There are many different ways to secure a wig and I guess we each have to find the right one. I found the headband style of securing my wig and haven’t looked back. I can go out in strong winds knowing my wig is secure. I have even caught it on a branch and it remains in place! This is what has given me confidence. When you feel confident, you look confident.”
6. Wig Community Is Everything
Being a part of a community allows you to be comfortable in the knowledge that you’re not the only one! Community creates a safe space where there’s no silly questions, answers or stories; just people who share their real-life experiences to help you along the way.
These were all once first-time wig wearers, who were once in your position. Now, they’re passing on advice from their own experiences to remind you you’re not alone.
“I was devastated when my hair began to fall out. I hit a real low. I decided to look at the amazing selection online. When my wigs arrived I was nervous and anxious. Over the next few days I tried them on, began to style them and wear them for a bit longer before wearing them out. I soon began to love them. I got so many compliments from friend and strangers. My advice be bold, be brave and own it. I change colour and style daily now. I love them.”
“I started with a wig that was just like my own hair before chemotherapy took it but have ended up 6 months on with around 10 wigs of differing styles that I wear to suit my mood. The only people that have noticed are family and friends – I bumped into an ex work colleague who I hadn’t seen for over a year and she commented on how I suited my hair longer!
For some of us wig wearing was thrust upon us due to circumstances and it’s scary – please remember wig wearers are a wonderful club of supportive people who are all rooting for you! Have fun!”
“You can’t change what’s happened, you can control the future. There are so many more people in the than you think. You are not on your own. It will eventually become part of you. Don’t dread it because you’ll find your life can become a lot easier. Firstly you can ditch the hairdryer. No daily washing and drying your hair. Getting ready to go out is so much simpler. Dressed and out in no time. I have two wigs for going out and special occasions and one for every day. When that looks sorry for itself, I demote one of the others and replace that one for going out.
I’m a 30 year wig wearer, it’s now me, it’s who I am. Life is a lot easier if you roll with it and It’s up to you whether you tell people, you’ll be amazed how many folks didn’t realise and wouldn’t have guessed.”
