Wearing my wig and my tentative steps forward

Wearing my wig and my tentative steps forward

You are not defined as a person as to whether you have your own hair or not.
That may sound so assured, rational and very sorted. But I am 25 years on this journey and it is a journey with many twists and turns, blind alleys, tentative steps forward and many steps backwards but it also an incredible journey of discovery.
I can honestly say that from the dark and anguished days when I first lost my hair to where I am now, I have strengthened and realised what is so much more important.
Believe me when I say that the beautiful toasted brown, long hairpiece was thrown across the bedroom several times! I then stood up and said aloud’ I have done nothing wrong. It is as a result of something complex. What I do know is that I still have my faculties.
I returned to my profession, wearing a wig.
I can still teach and I will do it brilliantly. From that day, I really went with that attitude, most of the time. I discovered that some of my close friends just didn’t know and were envious of my trendy hairstyles.
Today, thanks to wonderful wig suppliers like Simply Wigs, there is guidance and care .. and wonderful styles to choose from.
As human beings, we face many challenges, disappointments and losses.
Don’t allow the loss of your hair to become so monumental and consuming that it imprisons you and stops you living. With the benefit of hindsight, I know that I have wasted hours focussing on what is missing from the top of my head instead of using the rationale inside my head!
You radiate beauty when you show compassion, empathy and generosity. Live your life as you deserve to do so – fully, honestly and joyfully.
With love and blessings,
Tania

  1. Thankyou for these enriching comments. I have had terrible problems with my own hair which left me feeling awful most of the time. It’s sad that people don’t recognise that not everyone has great hair and bully you into accepting less than you can have for yourself by wearing a nice wig. It’s taken me a lifetime to get used to the idea that my hair will never grow into anything decent, and the maintenance which never worked. My own hair is now kept very short and tbh, it’s nobody’s business actualy what I ‘choose’ to wear. It undoubtedly makes me feel really good to wear a lovely wig and yet I still get ‘those’ people who can’t understand. I realise it’s best for me to not say anything to anybody. Of course it is traumatic to not have had the crowning glory or even hair that did not resemble fuse wire. Of course it is important to face the world with whatever makes you feel confident. Some people think they know what’s best, its unbelievable. Even equating it to me ‘hiding’ behind it. I also ‘choose’ to wear a nice head scarf, and in this way do not spend hours fretting and wasting my life. Good luck everybody xx. I think wigs are great!!

  2. It was lovely to read all the honest and supportive comments in this conversation thread. We absolutely must support eachother ; adversity and uncertainty can be overcome and at the very least reduced if we continue to offer supportive and positive messages.
The wig which I am wearing in the picture is actually a human hair one. It is Supplex Petite in dark warm brown . It was cut and styled by a salon.
I have to say that I decided to have a real hair wig after 23 years of wearing fibre ones … but have reverted back as I found the maintenance a bit too time consuming and I really couldn’t afford to buy two . There are amazing wigs . Enjoy the innovation which the wig industry is offering us . My friends who have their own hair actually envy me , especially during this pandemic when they can’t get to a hairdresser. Take care, lovely ladies x

  3. Such a positive uplifting article. Thanks for sharing Tanya. Might I say you look stunning. I too, if you do not mind, would like to know the brand and colour of the wig you’re wearing. It looks really natural.

  4. As someone, who has worn wigs for over 30yrs, I have found that some people can’t spot a wig and some people can! I have had friends who made no comment because they did not want to upset me by saying that they knew that I was wearing a wig. I have had colleagues, who thought that it was ‘funny’ to comment on my ‘rug’! There are nice people and not so nice people.
We can’t help it that we are losing/have lost our hair. Some people choose not to wear wigs/hairpieces and some opt to wear them!
Some people wear wigs, who don’t need to!
I find that wearing wigs is personal to all who do it. It is up to the individual, if they want to declare it to all, or on a need to know basis.
Some people are proud to wear wigs. Some people are devastated by their hair loss and will always be.
We are all different. The people we will meet in our lives are all different.
It would be nice to believe that everyone is judged on their good deeds, humour or abilities. Sadly, often, women, in particular, are judged more harshly on their appearance, than men. Often, sadly, by other women.
I don’t care if people know that I’m wearing a wig, or not, but it took a long time to reach this stage.
I think that I look 20yrs younger with my wig, than I do without it!! It didn’t happen overnight and no one else can tell you that you should be happy wearing a wig. Some people find them hot, uncomfortable, too expensive, or worry about them coming off in public!
It’s all down to the individual – the wearer
and the people around them! Not everyone will have the same experience.
What we can do is to offer advice and support to each other. It would be nice if more people would come forward and share their experience of the wigs they wear. There are not enough customer reviews with the wigs advertised. The models are all very attractive/slim/don’t wear glasses/have styled wigs on and are, usually, young. I’ve never bought a wig that looks the same as it does in the advert! Also, it would be helpful to see wigs in all the colours produced. If you see a picture of a colour, it tells you the other styles that come in that colour. However, I have often trawled through all the styles and the 360° views and customer reviews and, yet, still haven’t found a wig displayed in that colour! Also, shaded and rooted colours look very different on different styles/lengths. I know that people can borrow colour rings but you can’t do that if you are wanting to take advantage of a one day special offer. Not everyone can get down to Simply Wigs’ headquarters.
More real people showing off their wonderful wigs would be great!

  5. Very inspiring.

You look very glamorous…. out of interest I would love to know brand and colour of your wig.

    Best wishes

    Annie

  6. You have totally reflected my own journey and experience Tania. Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement it is so important to live to the full the lives we have. I usually assume that people are aware that I am wearing a wig but have then been surprised to be asked where I get my hair done because people like the style or colour. Since I need a petite size my choice was limited until I discovered Simply Wigs now I just have to decide how much to share when asked the questions.

  7. You are a beautiful lady Tanya and none wiyld know you were wearing a wig. I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and strangely enough I have worn wigs for the past 10 yrs from choice I know I would not like to return to high maintainance at this time So meant Apts etc. I feel so good in my wigs and like you my friends who don’t know love my “hair” x
