I was on holiday in Spain with my husband and son, wearing wigs to cover my bare head after 2 months of radiotherapy and 12 months of chemo. If the waiters at our local restaurant were surprised that I had a short spikey hairstyle for lunch (my beach wig) while sporting long wavy tresses at dinner, they were professional enough not to show it. And although I was happy with how easily I could go from swimming to dining without the all the hairdryer faff, I was quite excited at the prospect of my own hair appearing again. Except it never did.
“When it grows again, I think I will have a bob, because that’s always chic whatever your age, of course, it will probably come through grey, but that doesn’t bother me, a sleek grey bob would be quite stylish”.
Hopes went up when a single eyebrow hair emerged, then baby-fine hairs down appeared on my scalp, but that was all. I hadn’t been told that there was a risk that myhair loss would be permanent, at least I don’t think I was told, but as all the treatment took place in France maybe I missed something in translation.
“To be honest, I’m not sure I would have wanted to know anyway”.
Nevertheless, I was happy to have made it through the gruelling treatment and now, ten years on, I feel even better. I appreciate every new day and I enjoy wearing wigs whenever I go out. I rely on the good people at Simply Wigs to supply one or two new ones every year.
“I have built up a ‘wig wardrobe‘ which covers every occasion”.
I sometimes recall how desperately I used to straighten my own hair whenever it frizzed up in the damp – always trying for that sleek bob! – but now I laugh at showers, they just bounce off. I like being able to ring the changes with colours and styles, so it still surprises me when friends say that they hadn’t realised I wear wigs. And I was delighted to tell those who hinted darkly that I must have been getting illicit hair appointments during the lockdown, that it really hadn’t been necessary!
love, Veronica x

Thank you Veronica for writing your blog , so pleased for you . Also a big thank you to Simplywigs, I received Tori last week and was a little self conscious to wear her shopping. So plucked up courage to thin and shortened the fringe . Today I had an appointment at the dentist and decided to wear Tori ! My dentist who has known me for years , said : your hair looks amazing and you’re a bit darker, looks really nice . I was so pleased with her comments i told her it was a wig. I don’t think she believed me at first . She said it looks so natural, I should wear it all the time . This is my first wig and I’m delighted with it , but it won’t be the last .
Thank you again Simplywigs, and thank you for giving me a second chance xx
You look beautiful Veronica, what a great choice you made.As other’s have said it looks so natural, and the colour really suits your complexion.
I have my own hair cut in a bob,it’s become very thin and fly away since the menopause.I constantly strive to keep it sleek ,damp drizzly day’s are a nightmare .I’ve just ordered my first wig, looking forward to less faffing about !!
Thank you so much for your blog Veronica. I would love to know the style and brand of the wig you’re wearing. You look beautiful. The wig you’re pictured in is so natural looking. It frames your face perfectly and the colour is very flattering. It simply does not look like a wig!!
Enjoyed reading your story, and I must admit I smiled when you said you had short hair in the day and long hair for the evening, as I do this and the looks on people’s faces amuses me. I would not have thought your hair on the picture was a wig as it looks totally natural and like the last lady, I’d love to know the name and make of the wig. Thank you
Gorgeous blonde bob…. please canbyou tell us what its called.
What is this lady wearing? Looks great,a style I would be happy in x
Veronica, that wig is such a lovely natural style and the colour really suits you. You look fabulous. I too wear bob wigs – and, yes, a sleek grey bob would be great and a ‘going grey’ bob wig would be even better but I’ve yet to find one. Thank you for sharing your story.
Lovely wig, can I ask which one it is ?
You look great and it was uplifting and inspiring to read of your journey and to see you have a sense o& humour around the issue. Would love to know which wig and colour you are wearing in the photo.
Dear Simply wigs – might you ask your bloggers to identify their wigs and the colour chosen as it really helps would be purchasers to see them in natural situations?
Your shag-bob look is perfect for your face. Very confident and chic. Even as a fellow-wig-wearer, who has also worn many short, blonde bob wigs, I wouldn’t have thought that this wasn’t your scalp hair. It really looks perfect for you. Thank you for your story.
One of my neighbours of 20+ years also thought that I had wangled a hair appointment when she saw me during lockdown wearing a new wig in my usual style. I explained and she thought that I was joking!
