I am a relatively new wig wearer

Well, I haven’t looked back.

I have had thinning hair since the age of 30, am now 62. I disguised it by wearing it up all that time but it ruled my life – always checking the weather, avoided going out, rarely feeling good, hair sprayed to death.  I remember once showing my mother the full extent of my balding hair – her only comment was “well, you didn’t get it from me”! Did not help.  Then I got diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago and hormone treatment put the final nail in the coffin of my own hair.

Now have 6 wigs in quite different styles, length and shades of blonde. Simply Wigs is a great website – I have to keep my credit card well hidden on Fab Fridays.

Gym – changing rooms?

First 2 were grey. Didn’t treat these well – one designated for the gym and is now my painting and decorating wig. Now choosing to be blonde for the next few years at least! I wear my least favourite wig to the gym but it is quite a heavy one with lots of permatease and dark blonde – and I do go 5 times a week – so am considering changing it to something I actually like and feel great in.  I do gym work and then swim – taking the wig off and wearing a swim hat – that was so freeing compared to trying to keep my own hair dry. Changing rooms can be a bit tricky but I am gradually getting braver about it – after all, not something to be ashamed of.  I am not ready to wear selection of wigs to the gym as it is people who vaguely know me – somehow more difficult.  Still have days where I am convinced everyone knows.

My favourite for a night out is a Dream wig from Natural Image in the colour Wheat Mist.

On windy days I find short pixie cuts are the best. These are easiest on holidays too. But love changing it about and wearing textured bobs for going out. They all have pluses and minuses. I’d like to find one wig in the right colour and style and stick to it. But I don’t think that will happen in the near future – I am having too much fun. My friends have been really supportive and complimentary – I have had a couple of wig nights where they try them all on.

They all have different favourites – not helping me choose! I find that my male friends are slightly embarrassed, but soon relax. One big bugbear is that colours can appear so different compared to web pages and all manufacturers are different and I have decided that permatease is not for me, rooted colours are more natural and Ellen Wille seems to suit. But my favourite for a night out is a Dream wig from Natural Image in Wheat Mist – a gorgeous colour.

Great points

  • I now look people in the eye when walking along the street and walk out confidently
  • I wear eye make-up every day now – and big earrings
  • I am told I look 10 years younger and younger than my younger sister
  • People say my personality has changed – much more outgoing and sociable.
  • Dont have to carry emergency hair repair kit – can go out without a handbag or umbrella
    Swimming is so easy
  • I go out for long walks now – I just pull on a hat if windy or wet and always wear jackets with hoods

So on days I ever feel “ARGH EVERYONE KNOWS” I remind myself of how much better life is now. I am looking forward to my son’s wedding in the summer instead of dreading it.

Love Sue
