I first started wearing wigs when I was 11 years of age.

I first started wearing wigs when I was 11 years of age.

My Nan had recently died and I wasn’t able to grieve for her and I always maintained this is how I showed my grief’

Like most of your other readers, I too saw a bath full of hair and when I brushed my hair you couldn’t see the brush for hair. I lost all the hair on my head and my body hair too.

I travelled to London for regular treatments, steroid injections into my scalp after 6 months I was told I had received the maximum amount of injections and they couldn’t give me any more, I then had Ultraviolet treatments which didn’t work either.

My first wigs were Human Hair Wigs, that was all that was available to children at that time. They couldn’t get wet as the hair would come out which wasn’t ideal for a child of 11 years. I had two, one to wear and the other was sent away to be dry cleaned and I did find school and relationships difficult through my teenage years.
Now after all these years I feel wearing wigs has made me a stronger more confident person’

I enjoy changing my wig styles and shades and the availability through “Simply Wigs” is great even topped off with chocolate when your order arrives, what could be better.

If my hair ever grew back after all these years, I would panic, all that hair washing and blow-drying, it’s not for me. When I am on holiday I have the perfect smooth legs. My mascara has become my eyebrows and I regularly have eyelash extensions. I have found a hairdresser who cuts my wigs if needed.

I am now wearing the “Watch Me Wow” Wig by Rachel Welch in shade Vanilla and I have received lots of compliments from friends and family. I don’t normally wear long wigs but felt like a change and found that during the warm weather, I could tie my hair back or have it up, which was cooler and a nice change from always wearing my hair down.
Lots of love,
Susan

  1. I don’t wear wigs and I have my real hair but I am thinking of trying long hair but my mom gave me one wig and it is short and I am too shy too ask for any other one

  2. Susan, you look lovely in ‘watch me wow’. I can’t imagine how to you felt as as child losing your hair. I’m fairly new to Alopecia and am dealing with it as best I can. Love wearing my wigs so easy in the mornings now. Thank you so much for sharing your story ?

  3. You look really good Susan !
As a wig wearer for the last 14 years, l have had some less than perfect wigs at first, but gradually found what suits me and what doesn’t!
Now l have found Simply Wig.s ……( about 4 years ago) it’s so much easier, with all the choice, l am going nowhere else! ,and like the other comments, l honestly don’t think l would want my hair to regrow, when l think of the morning faff ,styling and bad hair days ……All good hair days now!

  4. Wow! You look fabulous Susan, the ‘Watch me wow’ really suits you. It must have been really hard for you during your teenage years but the fabulous choice of wigs that are available now are a real boost for those of us with alopecia and hopefully for the young ones too.

  5. Hi. Your story sounds very similar to mine. Mine also started at that age and I also lost my eyebrows and eyelashes. Wigs were not good then but it’s quite different now. I also sent in an article a couple of month’s ago.
By the way the Raquel Welch Watch me now wig looks great on you – did you have to have it cut at all it was it wearable straight from the box please. Looking for a new similar style – also what colour is yours – it’s lovely.
    Take care.

  6. You look fab Susan , I agree with you about our hair growing back ! I couldn’t cope either ! Such lovely wigs available now , and that you can try them on at home , if not suitable can send them back ! X

  7. Susan, thank you for telling us about your journey through childhood. I’m so glad that you have pointed out some of the positives of hair loss and alternative hair, because there are many. Since I have been wearing wigs, I can spot a fellow wig wearer with almost 100% certainty. So many beautiful and highly respected people in the media, particularly the beautifully presented newsreaders and TV hosts, wear wigs and toppers, The way they look makes me want to burst with positivity. As you say, wig wearing does present challenges that boost up your strength and resilience. Aren’t we lucky that we were able to let the daily struggle go? X

  8. Hi Susan…
Yes we all think of hair loss linked to ageing, hormones or stress and forget about the young children that it does happen to…you look gorgeous in that style it really suits you!

  9. Oh Susan I know what you mean so well, I too wouldn’t wish to have hair back. The wigs are wonderful and so much easier than the maintenance of our own hair. You look amazing with that style, like you I have confidence I never had pre-wig wearing days.
