How Wigs Changed My Life After Androgenic Alopecia: My Hair Loss Journey

My First Signs of Hair Loss

I wanted to share my experience with hair loss and how discovering wigs has truly changed my life. Like many, I had heard of alopecia but didn’t fully understand the different types until I was diagnosed with androgenic alopecia. While this condition typically affects men with hair loss on the top and front of the head, for women like me, it presents as a general thinning across the entire scalp. My journey started in my 40’s when, in a fitting room, I caught a glimpse of my scalp showing through on both sides of my head. From that moment on, I became painfully aware of how visible my hair loss was, especially when people were sitting behind me.

Losing Confidence at the Salon

Going to the hairdresser became a dreaded experience. While others left the salon with beautiful, voluminous styles, mine was always just an attempt to disguise the thinning areas. A hairdresser once discouraged me from considering wigs, insisting they were expensive and difficult to maintain – something I later discovered was completely untrue!

The Frustration of Hair Loss Solutions

For years, I tried different products to mask my scalp, but they were messy, impractical, and expensive. Sprays left residue all over my bathroom, and I lived in fear of rain ruining all my efforts.

Finding Freedom in Wigs

Eventually, I grew tired of the time-consuming struggle each morning, only to still dislike how my hair looked. That’s when I took the leap and purchased a Gisela Mayer Abbey duo-fibre wig. It was the best decision I ever made – I’ve never looked back or had a bad hair day since. I now own four wigs in this style, all in the same colour but with customized cuts by a specialist.

NOTE – unfortunatley the Abbey Duo Fibre wig is now discontinued but please see the full range of Duo Fibre wigs here.

The Simply Wigs Experience

When I considered trying a new style, I visited Simply Wigs, where I felt completely at ease. Being able to try on different wigs helped me make an informed decision, and I was pleased to learn that, due to my medical condition, I didn’t have to pay VAT on my wigs.

Common Concerns I Had – And Why They Didn’t Matter

Before wearing a wig, I had several concerns that I’m sure others share:

  • Will people notice and stare?
  • No. In fact, I received compliments on my “new hairstyle,” but no one even questioned whether it was a wig.
  • How will it feel?
  • Initially, I was a little self-conscious, but after a few outings, I completely forgot I was wearing one.
  • What about wind?
  • It was a worry at first, but I quickly realized my wig stayed securely in place.
  • Is it hard to maintain?
  • Not at all! With the right shampoo and conditioner, it’s simply a matter of washing, conditioning, drying on a wig stand, and then brushing into place.

The Power of Sharing My Story

After gaining confidence in my new look, I shared a picture and my story on Facebook. The response was incredible—my sister, who had been considering a wig for a while, went out and bought one immediately. Two of my friends, who also have the same hereditary hair loss, said they now feel comfortable exploring wigs themselves. The supportive comments I received reassured me that this was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

lots of love, Alison x

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Loss and Wigs.

Q: What is it like to live with androgenic alopecia as a woman?
Androgenic alopecia in women usually causes thinning across the scalp, rather than bald patches. It can affect confidence and make everyday activities – like going to the hairdresser – emotionally difficult. For me, finding wigs was life-changing. They gave me back my confidence and offered a practical, stylish solution to hair loss.

Q: Can wigs help with hair loss caused by androgenic alopecia?

Yes, wigs can be a transformative solution for women with androgenic alopecia. After trying many temporary products, I found that wearing a quality wig was easier to manage, looked completely natural, and helped me feel confident in public again.

  1. I also have androgenic alopecia, which started in my teens. I could never make my hair look attractive and nor could any hairdresser. My hair became distressingly thin around the time of the menopause and I was so embarrassed. That’s when I decided a wig would be the only possible way forward. One of the symptoms of androgenic alopecia is a sensitive, sore, itchy scalp. I have bouts of this on and off. I’m so thankful that I discovered Simply Wigs fourteen years ago, as my confidence has been restored since wearing their wigs – and I even feel attractive nowadays.

  2. Well done. Sharing your story helped many people. You look great in Abbey.

  3. You look beautiful. It’s a beautiful wig and I know from my own experience how much confidence wearing a wig makes. I too got so many compliments on my hair when wearing my wigs that it obviously looked so much like my own hair. Lovely story. Lots of love and good luck in the future xx

  4. Wig looks fabulous. Since wearing wigs my confidence has increased. I have 5 different styles, different colours,I love them all. People can’t believe they are wigs. Thanks Simply Wigs.
