Tips and Tricks for Wig Wearers

De-frizzing synthetic wigs

frizzy-wig-hairTypically, I find with longer styles of synthetic wigs, the ends suffer from ‘fibre friction’ as a result of constantly being in contact with your clothing. They tangle easily so a bit of care is needed. One of the best things that I find are the sprays that have been specifically designed for use with synthetic hair. You simply apply this on the ends and brush with a wig brush and leave to dry. Easy!
A sneaky tip that I use  . . . I use a hand held steamer to smooth out the ends. Put the wig on a wig stand and secure with pins. Use a wide-tooth comb and run through the ends and hold the steamer above and glide down until you see the hair smooth out.

Added security

hair-2Although wigs are secure and can be adjusted to tighten or loosen it, I like mine to feel really tight on my head, like a vice. To achieve this effect, I use hair grips on either side just slightly above the ear tabs and a further two at the nape just inside the adjusters. I know then for sure nothing is going to shift it!

Cutting and Trimming your Wig

hair-3Having your wig trimmed to suit your face is a way to get the exact look you want. In my experience, I find that my fringes are almost always too long so I always end up trimming them myself! As for the rest of the wig, if you want to cut it then go slowly and use thinning shears or a razor to remove any bulk and you’ll get a more natural look and the ends of the hair won’t be as blunt as when cut with scissors. However, don’t try this is you’re not confident as I have ruined wigs in the past because I’ve cut too much. I now have a stylist who comes to my house to cut the hair itself, but I am still okay with cutting the fringe myself.

When your wig first arrives

hair-5So, your new wig has arrived. You take it out of the box, carefully remove the net and undo the attached string and label. Now what?
After following the advice on how to put on your wig, you will find you have to do a little adjusting – this is particularly the case if the wig has a longer fringe, which you may want to part to one side or another.
This is what I do . . .
Press the top of the wig, on your hairline, with your warm fingers. This helps the wig to ‘mould’ to your skin. Press for as long as needed and work around to the tab area too. If you find the fringe keeps falling into your face, take an amount between your thumb and forefinger and turn it, holding for a few seconds as you go. I call this ‘crisp and turn’ because you can generally feel a ‘crisping’ of the hair. Keep going until the hair appears to hold in place. You can use wig hair-spray as well if you want extra hold. I have also learned that a little heat from the hairdryer helps to style the wig. Using the low heat setting, blast some air into the front or the crown whilst gently moving the hair with your fingers. If your wig has lots of permatease, you can (very lightly) use the hairdryer to flatten it at the crown area, using a little spritz of cold water and your hand to gently pat it down. But remember that heat and fibre wigs do not mix well, so be very careful using it on the synthetic wig as it could damage it.

  1. Any tips on keeping my fibre wig close to my face/cheeks right next to my ears, please? The hair seems to fall from too high up the side of my scalp and then leaves my ears exposed so that the hair line above/ around my ears looks unnatural. No doubt not helped by the fact I wear hearing aids positioned just above/behind my ears.

  2. Fab article Lila! I steam style my wigs on occasion, and it really seems to rejuvenate the firbes!
Definitely need to be extremely careful with the heat mind you!x I have made a few faux pas! Haha – this is great and very informstive though x
    Happy new year! Love from michelle x x x x x

  3. Hi Claire

I use a hand held steamer bought from Amazon it’s the Pro Breeze® Garment Steamer 850 Watt. Compact and Portable with Ultra-fast Heating Element and Travel Pouch at £26.99. Thank you Admin for replying also. Yes you do have to be careful – perhaps start on an older wig for practicing on.

  4. The hand held steamer that Lila uses helps her tweak and alter the styling of a fibre wig.
It is true that synthetic fibre should not come into contact with direct heat and we do not recommend using excessive amounts of heat on any type of fibre wig.
In this instance the heat is classed as a ‘soft heat’ and it can be used to help achieve a style that you require. If you do decide to try this method please be aware and use with caution as you can very easily destroy the fibre.

  5. In the post about de-frizzing longer wigs what do you mean by a hand held steamer?

Do you have a product name that you could share with us so as to enlighten us to what the steamer might be?

Also is it not the case though that synthetic wigs are never meant to come in contact with heat? I thought that putting heat on synthetic fibres was a sure fire way to destroying your wig.

  6. Hi Michelle, I just love your little videos, tips and tricks for wig wearers. I have alopecia and have worn a wig for nearly 12 years now, but you are educating me every time I read from your column. I do not have any confidence, and no-one has seen me without my wig, although friends and family do know about my hair loss. I admire you so much, you are doing a wonderful job, Although the little visible knots on my monofilament crown wigs does not cause me a problem as such, I am going to follow your instructions and do the cover up job as I have just watched in your latest little video and I think its great. Well done you! keep up the good work and have a wonderful Christmas.

  7. Thanks! I’ve just received the Angelica PM in Plumberry Jam and the fringe is falling in my face so the tips will help me sort that!

  8. Thanks Lila, great tips here! Especially the one about the low hairdryer to style, I didn’t know this and I have been wearing wigs for 40 years!
