When Should I Go Grey?

When Should I Go Grey?

Many things tie in with ageing. We become wiser, smarter, older, even more, settled in life and of course there are the physical changes we endure too. But one of the most pressing questions for so many of us is, should I let my hair go grey? At Simply Wigs we believe whatever you decide to do, you should feel confident doing it, so here is what we have to say about the grey area!

How long does it take to transition to grey hair?

Despite the myth that burning Christmas dinner or running late for work can cause your hair to go grey, it can actually take up to ten years for your hair to go completely grey. At least this gives you enough time to decide whether or not the grey hair is for you!

If you’re asking yourself ‘should I go grey?’, then you’re probably considering more than one avenue. Going grey is a natural progression in most of our lives and looks totally fabulous if you choose to embrace it. Of course, there are plenty of other options you can experiment with too! From dying your hair to rocking a wig, here are our top suggestions.

Option 1: Embrace The Grey

Some men and women find going grey empowering, they are owning the changes happening to their appearance and experiencing a new look. Going grey also saves your hair the damage of dying it, and it comes for free!

Whilst others don’t adjust to the transition with the same attitude, embracing your grey locks shouldn’t come with the stigma of ‘being old’ as people go grey at all different ages. Take Meryl Streep and Jamie Lee Curtis for example – they are two fabulous women who have embraced their maturity with open arms and decided to keep their hair naturally grey.

And grey is not just popular among those who have grown grey naturally. With the likes of Games of Throne’s Daenerys Targaryen, grey and silver hair has become quite the trend amongst the younger generation too!

Some people argue that grey hair suits mature people more than the younger generation because, as we get older, the pigmentation in our skin fades. As a result, we become slightly paler and, with grey hair being so light, it complements this paler skin tone better, helping you to avoid a harsh contrast between hair colour and skin tone.

Option 2: Wear a Grey Wig

As we get older, not only does our hair change colour, but we can also start to experience natural hair loss. According to the NHS, it’s estimated that around 40% of women aged 70 or over experience female-pattern baldness. This is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about, but we appreciate that it can feel stressful, knock your confidence and make you not feel like yourself.

To conceal thinning hair or hair loss, you may want to try out a grey wig. This will look totally natural and can give you an extra confidence boost! Or, you could even try a wig that has grey highlights, to ease yourself into the change gracefully.

For those of you who may already be wig wearers due to hair loss or hair thinning, know that you don’t have to wear the same wig forever! Just as people may dye or cut their hair for a change, you can have a look at new wigs to test out for a fresh start, and you may be at the time in your life where a grey wig feels right.

If this is what you’d like to try, we have plenty of grey wig options in our collection, but two of our favourite shades are Pewter Glow and Onyx Glow from Natural Image.

Option 3: Wear a Wig in Your Natural Shade

Others may prefer to buy a wig in their original hair colour rather than dying their hair and having the upkeep of roots. As you get older, your hair can become drier and thinner, and it often loses moisture. So rather than dying your hair, and potentially weakening your hair follicles, trying a wig is a great solution.

Whether you’re a natural blonde, brunette or red-head, we have wigs in every shade you can imagine, so you can find the closest shade match and make your wig look super natural.

Don’t forget that if you are making a change to your hair colour, you should ensure your eyebrows match!

So, should you go grey? We hope you’re now feeling more confident with how to handle this transition! Thanks to wigs, dyes and everything in between, we have far more flexibility and choice with our appearance and how we choose to present ourselves to the world. Societally, however, we feel it’s important to open up about these natural changes that happen as we age and make some of us feel uncomfortable.

At the end of the day, going grey or not going grey is totally your decision, and either option is a fabulous choice! If you are apprehensive about getting a new wig or are wanting to buy your first one, get in touch with us at Simply Wigs. Or, have a browse of our selection of wigs today.
