Styling a Heat-Resistant Wig

What is a Heat-Friendly Wig?

Heat-friendly or heat-resistant wigs are a special type of synthetic wig with fibres that can safely be exposed to higher temperatures without melting or deforming. Heat-friendly styles can be truly fabulous; you can personalise them by adding waves or wearing them smooth and sleek, depending on what you fancy.

Styling a heat-friendly synthetic wig can help your wig look and feel more natural, particularly for those who wear their wig every day, and you can change up your look without buying a whole new wig.

Preparing Your Wig

When styling a heat-friendly synthetic wig, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Always style the wig on a wig stand or a polystyrene styling head – never while wearing the wig.
  • Before styling your wig, start by gently detangling the wig using a wide-toothed comb and a quality detangling wig spray designed for synthetic hair.
  • Wait until your wig is fully dry if it’s been washed. Never attempt to heat-style a wet or damp wig, as this can stretch or damage the fibres.

Straightening Your Heat-Friendly Wig

When styling a heat-friendly synthetic wig, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Heat your straightener to a safe temperature for your wig (more on that in a moment).
  • Separate the wig into smaller sections of hair.
  • Close the straightener over a single section of hair, starting at least an inch from the root, to avoid damage where the fibres are connected to the cap.
  • Slowly move the straightener down, being careful not to hold it in one place for too long.
  • Repeat this process on other sections of hair until you have straightened the full wig.
  • Wait for the wig to cool completely on the wig stand before putting it on to allow the style to set.

Curling Your Heat-Friendly Wig

When styling a heat-friendly synthetic wig, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Heat your curler to a safe temperature for your wig.
  • Separate your wig into smaller sections.
  • Taking your first section, wrap it around the barrel of your curler. If your curler is tapered, remember that using the tip of the curler will create a tighter curl, while the wider end of the barrel will create a looser curl.
  • Hold the tool in place for eight to ten seconds.
  • Let go of the fibres and allow them to fall off the end of the curler. You can catch the curl with your hand to stop the curl from dropping too quickly.

Once you have heat-styled your wig and you’re happy with the look, leave it on the wig stand to cool completely; if you try to put it on while it’s still warm, the style won’t have set and may fall or change.

A SIMPLY WIGS EXPERT

Each brand of heat-friendly wigs has different temperature limits, which can range from 100 – 150 degrees Celsius. If you are unsure, please contact us to check! For the heated tools, we always recommend using ones with a digital setting so you don’t overheat and damage the fibres.

If you love the ease of wearing a ready-to-wear regular synthetic wig, these may not be for you as they do require regular heat to re-set the fibres, and they need a little extra care and looking after.

Heat-friendly fibres are prone to tangling and frizzing. They do not like friction, and you need to condition and comb through more than a regular synthetic fibre wig.

You can use a lightweight conditioning spray whilst out and about to comb through gently, especially areas that are more prone to friction, like in the nape and towards the ends of the fibre. If wearing your wig in a wavy style, you can spray the conditioner and gently scrunch into the curls/waves with your fingers.

After each wear, we recommend using a leave-in spray conditioner and combing through your wig before popping it onto your wig stand.

Every brand of wig has its own range of heat-friendly collections! If you are wanting to search for a new heat-friendly style, you can choose from some of our biggest brands, including the Jon Renau HD (Heat Defiant) collection, as well as Raquel Welch UK, Ellen Wille, Gisela Mayer, TressAllure, Stimulate, and Hairdo Natural Collection[RC4] .

Seasoned wig-wearers will know that, to keep your wig in tip-top condition, it’s important to use the right products.

We always recommend a wide-toothed comb, as this can help detangle your wig without catching or pulling the fibres. If you need a little extra power, the Jon Renau HD Detangler is a gentle, sulphate-free solution!

It’s also important to use the correct shampoo and conditioner, like the Hairpower Ellen Wille Synthetic Shampoo and the Cyber Intensive Treatment Conditioner. Ellen Wille also offers a Hair Tip Liquid to protect against split ends, an Anti-Static Spray to avoid faux pas, and a Synthetic Balsam to revitalise and keep your wig smelling gorgeous.
