There are many reasons people might choose to wear a wig.
Whether it’s due to hair loss as a result of cancer, alopecia, or genetic hair thinning, or if you simply want to experiment with a new look, wearing a wig is nothing to be ashamed of.
Like with many things in life, adapting to something new can take time and it’s only natural to feel a bit nervous when stepping out of your comfort zone. We all need a bit of a boost sometimes, so here are our expert tips on how to boost your confidence to help you wear your wig with pride.
Banish negative thoughts
It’s only natural to experience a knock in confidence after hair loss, but it is possible to regain it. Try not to dwell on negative thoughts and niggling worries and instead try focusing on the positives. A bit of self-love and giving yourself constant reassurance will help to keep those bad thoughts at bay.
Use your support network
Dealing with any challenge in life is hard to do on your own, so make the most of your support network and surround yourself with positivity from your loved ones. Those who are closest to you will help to keep your spirits high and give you that much needed boost to your confidence.
Dress to impress
It’s a well-known saying that if you look good, you feel good, so why not treat yourself to a brand new outfit that will make you feel fabulous? If you feel great in your own skin you’re less likely to be worrying about your wig and what people might think – plus, you might pick up a compliment or two along the way which can only help in making your confidence grow.
Experiment with styles
If you’re choosing your first wig, you may feel more comfortable choosing something that is close to your natural colour before making a huge leap into something new, but you can also play around with new cuts and styles to mix things up. There are so many different wigs to choose from, so have fun playing around with different options and you may stumble across a look that you can’t wait to show off.
Learn from a professional
Learn to get to grips with your wig by seeking the advice of a professional stylist who will be able to show you the best ways to style and properly apply the wig to achieve a natural look. They will also give you tips on how to replicate the look yourself at home.
Practice at home
Like all things that are new, practice really does make perfect so spend a bit of time in front of the mirror putting on and styling your wig until you feel comfortable with the application. Once you’ve got a handle on it and found a style that you’re happy with, you’ll gradually feel much braver going out in public and showing it off to the world.
Embrace positive self-talk
It might sound a little silly, but engaging in positive self-talk can do wonders for your self-esteem.
The key to looking gorgeous is believing you are gorgeous, so talk to yourself like you would to someone you love. A bit of self-encouragement and positivity can go a long way.
Compliment yourself
Keeping up the theme of having a positive mindset, remember not to be so hard on yourself and allow a bit of self-praise every now and again. Try looking in the mirror and identifying three things about your appearance that you really love – it will remind you of all your best qualities.
Play with it!
That much-needed confidence will come once you overcome any self-consciousness, so don’t be afraid to sit and have a play around with your wig until you get used to it. Trim it, style it, take a mountain of selfies – play around and do whatever you need to do to make your wig work for you!
I have been wearing a hair weave for over 12 years but I never really liked it and it cost between £1000 and £3000 per year to maintain . I looked the same every time I returned from the studio and it was only a reunion with old school friends and one who very sweetly shared her wig journey that I saw there was another way . After some research I had the system removed but was shocked to discover the extent of my hair loss . I opted for a real hair topper which was not a long way removed from the system but the cost made me nervous to wear it all day every day . I got a couple of bob wigs , that I didn’t love , but on my friends advice I watched endless you tube videos to work out what I really wanted . The post man came an hour ago with Ellen Willie Moda in Red Plum Shaded . It was a revelation ! It ‘s sooooooo perfect . I love it and I love me in it . I have sent a picture of me wearing it fresh out of the box . Research is never wasted and there are endless wig sisters out there who can hold your hand . I’m lucky , I found my way to go within a month . I may take a little detour every now again . We can do this . ?
Great advice, thanks
