As a first-time wig wearer and buyer, we understand that you must have a million questions which you want to be answered all at once! As we are often inundated with questions from our lovely customers, we’ve compiled this easy-to-read guide that runs you through our most common questions in detail. There are so many styles and types of wigs available that you might feel overwhelmed by all of the information presented to you on the web. So, simply sit back and read through our expert guide to find out how to buy a wig online and where to buy good quality wigs.
How to buy good QUALITY wigS
1. What’s my style?
If you’re buying a wig online for the first time, choosing a wig may seem like a daunting task. One of the best tips listed in our beginner’s guide to wearing a wig is choosing a familiar style. Luckily, at Simply Wigs, we have a range of good quality wigs in every style imaginable. You can find a style similar to your own, or you could be daring and go for a completely new look. A change of colour? Or, a change of texture, perhaps? It’s up to you and what you feel the most comfortable trying!
When purchasing a wig, you have to think about when and where you will wear it. We want you to get the maximum wear out of your wigs, and for that to happen, you must feel comfortable! Will you be wearing it all of the time, or only for special occasions? Do you want to invest in good quality wigs, or would you prefer a hair enhancer? Thinking about the context in which you will wear your wig will help inform your decision-making process.
Our customers always tell us, “I wish I had chosen a wig earlier as it’s a lot easier than my own hair!”. From short ‘edgy’ cuts to long luxurious styles, we’ve made it easy for you by putting them into the following length/style categories:
2. Choosing your wig size
Remember, whatever your size, we can help.
95% of our customers are an average size. Even if you’re not in this group, most good quality wigs have adjustable pull straps with up to an inch of give so that the wig can be tightened or slackened, depending upon the size of your head. This is especially useful if you’re in the process of losing your hair, as you may need your wig to be tighter later on as your hair falls out. Wig sizes can differ slightly between brands, so it’s good practice to know the size of your head to ensure you’re purchasing the best-fitting wig for you. All of our good quality wigs are made to feel snug and secure to help you feel as comfortable as possible.
How Do I Measure?
Easy… all you need is a soft tape measure. Simply measure around the circumference of your head, from the hairline, behind the ear, around the nape of your neck, and then back around to the front hairline again!
We have a dedicated blog that runs you through a wig size guide in more detail, but for now, take a look at our handy table for more information on how to choose a wig that will fit you best.
Cap Size | Circumference |
---|---|
Child / Petite Petite | 19" (48.3cm) |
Petite | 21" (53.3 cm) |
Petite / Average | 21.5" (54.6cm) |
Average | 22" (55.8cm) |
Large | 23" (58.4cm) |
3. Does wig construction differ in good quality wigs?
Wig construction can be a minefield for the first-time wig buyer, as many different types of construction are available to purchase. At Simply Wigs, we have always said that you pay for what you get and, as a general rule of thumb, that is true! But why? Well, wigs may look the same on the outside, but the secret to good quality wigs is within the construction ‘. To see the structure of the wig construction, you need to look underneath the piece.
Take a look at the different types of construction below to find out the main differences.
100% Hand Tied | Lace Front | Monofilament | Wefted |
---|---|---|---|
• Very natural appearance as each hair moves freely. | • Creates a very natural hairline. | • Illusion of natural growth from scalp where the hair is parted. | • Pre-teased at the roots so creating lift. |
• Styling versatility as you can comb the hair in any direction. | • Allows for styling hair away from the face. | • Double mono layer of extra soft material for added comfort. | • Cost effective, durable & affordable. |
• Ideal for sensitive scalps, the softest and most comfortable cap. | • Caution when handling due to the delicate nature of the material. | • Full top, Parting or Crown areas. | • Good air ventilation from the open wefting construction. |
• Lightest construction method. | • Ready to wear now available. | • Most popular type of wig. | • Capless and traditional types. |
Quick Note: The above information lists the most common type of construction, and some wigs may be a combination of either of them. As an example, you may get a hand-tied wig with a monofilament top and lace front, or you may get a wefted wig style with a monofilament parting area. All of our products include detailed product information found on the ‘What’s Inside’ tab.
4. Human hair wigs vs fibre hair wigs
We stock a selection of good quality wigs that use human hair and fibre hair. Both human hair and fibre wigs have their advantages, and there are very good reasons to choose either of these wig types because they have unique qualities. Many people choose their hair material based on the purpose of their wig. For example, human hair wigs are the best option for those who love to style their hair. On the other hand, fibre wigs are more affordable, therefore better for occasional use. Take a look at what our experts say in this simple guide.
Human Hair | Fibre Hair |
---|---|
Most natural look & feel. | Can look and feel quite similar to human hair. |
Requires more maintenance - especially after washing | Limited styling versatility (No heat to be applied) |
Very durable and longer lasting. | Less durable, should last between 4-8 months. |
More expensive than fibre hair. | Little maintenance, can be worn straight out of the box. |
Premium Remy Hair has the advantage of being the highest quality available and this leads to less tangling and even more durable. | Heat Friendly Fibre has the advantage of more styling versatility (hot tools may be used - max 350°). BUT is less durable (2-3 months lifespan) |

Hello,
I have never thought that I would one day have to wear a wig as I have always had lovely thick hair that I could do anything to. But I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis ! The medication changed everything ?. Do you have premises where I could come and try some wigs on? I know roughly what I want but buying online is another problem. Please let me know.
Regards Aletta
My experience over a period of 18 years of wearing wigs is the longevity if worn on a daily basis – human hair wigs will look good to reasonable up to 8months and fibre wigs will do the same up to 3 months. Indeed, the best way of keeping a wig looking natural is to know when to replace it, which I have learnt to embrace as an opportunity to try something new and exciting.
