Coming To Terms With Hair Loss

We all need a friend – a hero.

Our customer Elizabeth has both these in Anita. She would like to thank her best friend who works for the NHS. She is an incredibly skilled professional but also exceptionally caring. She is a wonderful communicator because she listens.

Here is Elizabeth’s story.

The year was 1972

my mother was 59 and looking forward to stopping work. My parents had always dreamed of going on a cruise. A trip of a lifetime from Lancashire to sailing the world on a cruise ship. I got home from working in a factory and mum was in bed, something was very wrong, she was always on the move.

I was the youngest of 7 children and at 19 I was the only one still living at home. My siblings had all married and had families of there own to care for. I was close to all my sisters but especially Kathleen, who was 24 years old, she had just found out she was pregnant. So at home, it was me, mum and dad.

Mum was very sick and within 3 months had died from what I now know as a qualified nurse to be bowel cancer. Our family was devastated but we had a glimmer of hope, Kathleen’s baby was due in January 1973 – we had Christmas and a new addition to the family, so we had a beacon of light at the end of a dark tunnel.

December 17th came I was at home on my own, dad was working, there was a knock on the door. Kathleen’s husband stood there. I asked excitedly had the baby come early, then I noticed his face. Kathleen had been involved in a road traffic accident and she and her unborn baby had died.

I cannot put into words the pain my family went through, my poor dad was beyond heartbroken. Around 3 months later my hairdresser noticed a bald patch on the back of my scalp, within a very short space of time my hair had gone, my journey into alopecia and wigs began.

My confidence and self-esteem disappeared. Grief is a horrible journey but it is also a part of life. There is no doubt I have been through the mill. Sometimes I have paid vast amounts of money for wigs that were uncomfortable and looked well . . . like wigs.

Now, I found Simply Wigs and what a difference it has made to my life. After all these years I am still working on my self-confidence and self-esteem but with the help of Simply Wigs, I will get there.

Anita has been with me for many years along my journey with alopecia. She is always there when I feel down and she has helped me come to terms with the hair loss. Anita is my best friend and my rock, and always gives me the precious gift of her time.

She rings me just about every day even after finishing an exceptionally busy shift at the hospital and she has made my life so much easier. We are both nurses and we live in different parts of the country. We initially met during the late ’90s when we travelled the world working on boards cruise liners in the medical department, it was good fun for a few years.

Wow!! A shocking but amazing story. You have done so well to cope with so much. You look beautiful, by the way, and as a wig wearer myself – I would say ‘totally natural!’ I j know what that means. Hugs across the airwaves to you both x
