Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing a Wig

Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing a Wig

For those new to the world of wigs, it’s good to clue yourself up on what you should and shouldn’t do when choosing and wearing a wig. Whether you’re a full-time wig wearer or looking to wear one every now and again, there are certain things you can to that will ensure maximum comfort and a flawless look!

Do…

Style Your Wig – When you’ve bought a new wig, it’s an important step to make sure the cut and colour of the wig suits your style and face shape. It’s a good idea to take your wig to the hairdressers and have them style it for you. This ensures that you’re wearing a style that suits you!

Choose a Natural Hairline – Hairline is extremely important in achieving a seamless look that people will assume is your own. To achieve this, make sure your own hair is hidden and you line the front of the wig up with your natural hairline. Anything further back or forward is going to make the wig appear unnatural. A lace front wig allows you to part the hair on the wig wherever you like, helping you to achieve a style that suits you best.

Care for Your Wig – Whether you have a human hair or synthetic wig, it’s extremely important to maintain and look after it – just like you would with your own hair! There are various wig care products that can help you clean your wig easily and efficiently. Make sure you’re investing in products that are suitable for either your synthetic or human hair wig. Caring for your wig helps to prolong its life and keep it looking fresh!

Personalise Your Look – Wig wearers can change their look and personalise it even further through the use of headbands, headscarves, and different hairstyles, such as a ponytail. The key to being happy with your look is being able to personalise it to suit you. Your confidence will make your look all the more beautiful when wearing a wig!

Choose a Complementary Colour –If you’re hoping to achieve a natural look, be mindful of the colour you choose. Keep in mind to choose a colour that is going to match your skin tone and therefore looks natural. The most natural look will be achieved when you choose a wig colour that matches your own natural hair colour.

Use a Wig Stand – When you’re not wearing your wig, keeping it on a wig stand will help to keep it in shape and away from anything that can tangle or pull on the hair strands. It’s also useful for keeping your wig in one place – you don’t want to misplace your lovely new wig!

Try Before You Buy – Trying a wig on is the best way of finding a style that looks natural on you. This isn’t always possible for those that have to buy online. However, we have developed luxurious fitting rooms at our Simply Wigs shop in West Yorkshire. This way, you can try on the wigs you are interested in, but don’t forget to book an appointment! For those unable to come to our fitting rooms, we have a Youtube account and 360 degree view on product pages to help ladies to get a good visual of each wig!

Don’t…

Wear a Wig Straight Out of the Box – You don’t want box hair when wearing a wig. It’s important to brush through your wig and allow it to hang and fall into place. Wigs can become slightly tangled or misshapen when they’ve been boxed up on their way to you!

Choose a Bulky Wig – To achieve a wonderfully natural look, avoid wigs that are just too bulky. Excess bulk on the top of the head is a real giveaway to a wig and isn’t a good look.

Wear Your Wig 24/7 – It’s important to take your wig off so that your scalp and own hair can breathe, as well as then being able to look after your wig properly. Some choose to take their wig off each night, whereas others prefer to take their wig off every few days. It’s personal preference but either way, it’s important to have a break from wearing a wig.

Use Excessive Heat – As human hair wigs are, well, human hair, heat can damage the wig just like it would your own hair. If you’re curling or straightening your wig on a regular basis, it’s good practice to use a hair protection spray. Synthetic wigs can only be styled with heat if they are labelled as heat-friendly, otherwise, you can’t use heat to style your wig.

With this knowledge in tow, you should be well on your way to enjoying your lovely new wig! Check out the rest of our blog for more tips on wig wearing. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any help with anything.

  1. I find after a couple of wears my wig doesn’t sit right. I take good care of them, but wonder what is the best technique so it sits right around the hairline.

  2. I recently buzzed my hair off due to hair loss and im going to start wearing a wig with tape as i do ju jitsu im just scared it will fall off or that wearing a wig will prevent new growth or that the tape will take my hairline back 🙁

  3. I’ve noticed that my lace front synthetic wig has many fibers that looked kinky and rough around the front. It’s obvious against the smooth texture of those around it,

I’m unable to brush them out. I think the fibers got pulled somehow. Is there a way to have this fixed? I love my wig SO much and hate the thought of it being ruined and believe it’s a discontinued style.

  4. I only wear my wig when I go out ,the rest of the time it’s on my wig stand. I don’t glue or tape my lace wig to secure it because I’m not wearing it daily. I am going to be wearing my wig full time for a week when I go overseas so have to buy some wig tape. I do curl my hair sometimes but use old fashioned hair rollers or
Bobby pins, I never used a curling iron any heat products. I have human hair wigs.

  5. no it actually does the opposite because your hand is no manipulating your hair. just mak esure to not forget to take care of your actual hair while wearing the wig

  6. Hi, thank you for your interest in Lace Front wigs 🙂 You can find out more information here
    I hope this helps.

  7. You can not put highlights into a synthetic fibre wig 🙁
Even though it is possible and some of our clients have put highlights into human hair wigs, this is something that we would not recommend.

  8. Is it possible to buy wigs same colour and style but for some reason one won’t style the way you the others do? I have three wigs exactly the same but one simply will not style properly and actually looks ‘wiggy’. Can’t work it out. Is it worth getting styled by an expert to renovate it?

  9. I agree with Lisa, most wigs are too shiny, I’ve used talcum powder in the past, but find a little dry shampoo does a better job now as it also helps to ‘texturise’ the wig and makes styling easier

  10. I am afraid that we do not send out colour samples 🙁
I would suggest that you give us a call so that you can fully discuss your colour options. You can then narrow your choice down to a few colours that may suit you. One other option is to make an appointment so that you can come and try on the pieces that you like 🙂

  11. Do you do colour samples?, this would be very useful for women who can’t get to your shop and would save the fuss of having to return because the colour is not quite right despite description.

  12. I always find New wigs very shiny false looking so I put a bit talcum powder on in it wow what a difference. I feel like a new woman.just simple tip.
