The Guide to Children’s Chemo Hats and Headwear

The Guide to Children’s Chemo Hats and Headwear

There are many reasons someone might experience hair loss at a young age, including alopecia, cancer treatment or genetic conditions. This can understandably be upsetting and unsettling for children and can cause them to feel out of place.

At Simply Wigs, we’re on a mission to help these brave children cope with their hair loss, so, in this post, we’ll be looking at the different options of children’s hair loss headwear that are available, including wigs, hats, turbans and headbands.

The Different Types of Children’s Hair Loss Headwear

There are lots of options when it comes to children’s chemo headwear. Some of the most comfortable and practical options include:

Chemo Turbans for Children

Chemo headbands
Children’s Headbands

Children’s wigs

Many of these products are made with soft, comfortable materials to ensure the child’s comfort and help boost their confidence. When shopping for children’s hair loss headwear, it’s important to ensure that the products you choose are specifically designed for children for more accurate sizing.

Wigs for Children

Wearing wigs can be a gamechanger for children with hair loss, because as much as we would all love for kids to feel confident regardless of hair loss or other differences, it’s not always realistic.

Currently, we offer two wigs specifically designed for children – the Miley wig and the Logan wig, both from the Rene of ParisAmore’ collection. Both wigs are available in a range of brown and blond shades, with the Miley offering an extra ‘Bubblegum’ shade in fun pink tones!

In a small number of cases, some of our petite wigs range can also be worn by children; if you would like to find out more, please speak to our team, who will help guide you in the right direction.

Children’s Chemo Hats

Children’s chemo hats are a popular and often crucial item for the comfort and self-esteem of children with hair loss. One of the most popular types of hats for kids is a cap. Wearing a sun cap during the summertime is important for any child, but especially for those experiencing hair loss. Protecting your scalp and face from the sun’s UV rays is vital.

When choosing a sun cap, we recommend focusing on fabric. A soft, cotton fabric is ideal for comfort in terms of feel and breathability. Also, look for caps with a wide brim and UV protection. To protect your wig from tangles and frizz, gently smooth the hair at the top of the wig backward before placing the cap on top. When removing the hat, pull it off in a backward direction to maintain the shape of the wig.

In the winter, beanies and other winter hats can help children with hair loss to regulate their body temperature and stay warm and cosy. This is especially important for kids with health conditions who might be more vulnerable to the cold.

Kids’ Headbands

Headbands are another easy piece of children’s hair loss headwear. Fabric headbands are extremely comfortable, versatile and look cute! You can find headbands in a range of sizes and widths, and they can be stretched out to cover different amounts of the head.

Your child could easily wear soft and stretchy headbands with a wig, too. For a natural look, position the headband slightly back from the front of the wig and gently pull some of the hairs out around the hairline to frame the face.

Turbans for Children

Turbans for children are also ideal for offering comfort to those with hair loss. Finding a turban that’s soft, comfy and seamless is key. Turbans for children are very similar to beanie hats, so they work especially well in colder climates or during the winter months.

Supporting Children with Hair Loss

Children with hair loss may struggle with self-esteem and feeling different to their peers; those feelings are valid, but having a supportive ear can sometimes make all the difference.

One way to help is to find others who are in the same position and can help the child feel understood. Additionally, finding representation – such as Mattel’s Barbie doll with no hair – can help normalise hair loss for children.

At Simply Wigs, we have cultivated an incredible community of wig-wearers and many people who share their stories with us experienced hair loss as children. For example, Lizzie, who lost her hair aged six to alopecia, has shared her tips on what helped her cope growing up. She also asked her mum to share her experience of parenting a child with hair loss!

The most important thing in supporting a child with hair loss is making sure that they know their hair loss doesn’t define them; they might love music or art or sports; they might be cheeky or mischievous or giggly; they might love dressing up or jumping in muddy puddles. Every child is amazing and deserves their confidence to be built up!

We hope that this guide to children’s chemo hats, headbands and turbans helps you and your child in coping with hair loss. Children who experience hair loss are extremely brave, and often a comfortable headpiece will provide them with a security blanket and confidence boost.
