Headwear for Hair Loss: Fabrics Explained

Headwear for Hair Loss: Fabrics Explained

For those that do not wish to wear a full wig or hair piece,

there is a gorgeous and varied collection of headwear for hair loss. These styles have been specially designed to incorporate comfort and style for wearers, providing a fashion statement that ladies will be proud to wear.

From hats to head scarves, there is a variety of accessories that can protect your head from the sun, wind or rain and mask any bald areas, and hold any hair that you may have in place.

In order to cover hair loss in a stylish way, headwear must extend to the nape of the neck. There are a variety of materials used in headwear for hair loss, all with different properties that can benefit the wearer.

Headwear Materials:

Cotton: Often used in headwear, such as turbans and beanies. The properties of cotton fabric make the headwear soft and comfortable, particularly good for those who have complete hair loss. Cotton headwear is comfortable to wear around the house, but can withstand all the elements when out and about too. In wig caps, the cotton material can provide a protection from the sun of 50+, whilst still being breathable and allowing your scalp to breathe. A cotton/poly interlock is a favourite for women undergoing chemotherapy treatment; the poly blend adds shape retention whilst retaining softness for a sensitive scalp.

Polyester: Great for absorbing any excess moisture. Because of this property, polyester fabric is great at providing comfort during the warmer months, as it will help your scalp maintain a comfortable temperature. Polyester often features in hair turbans, but should be avoided in head scarves as it can cause them to slip off if they are not tied correctly.

Silk: Silk head scarves are ideal for ladies experiencing complete hair loss, providing a luxurious softness to the scalp. These scarves are perfect for any time of year, but can be a blessing during warmer months as the material is just so breathable. The silk allows head scarves to drape elegantly around your head and face, providing a flattering look for all ladies. We have a beautiful range of headscarves for hair loss, there is a style, colour, and pattern for everyone!

Bamboo: Headwear containing bamboo is heavenly soft and still provides comfort during warmer weather, absorbing and evaporating sweat whilst remaining breathable. Bamboo is also non-static, meaning that the accessory won’t cling to your head, as well as anti-bacterial and odour-resistant. This helps to keep your headwear fresh at all times! Headwear containing bamboo tends to come in the form of a headscarf or turban. Head scarves are versatile and can cover your whole head, or just areas of hair loss or thinning. Because of this, bamboo head scarves are great for ladies suffering from partial hair loss caused by conditions such as alopecia, as you have the flexibility of covering your whole head, or just the affected area.
Bamboo also features in nightcaps. For those experiencing full or partial hair loss, it is important to know that 30-50% of a person’s body heat is lost through the head. Because of this, wearing a night cap can be extremely beneficial in maintaining body heat at night. We think it is important for the wearer to feel stylish and comfortable at all times. Because of this, our night cap has been created without irritating seams, and with a simple design that will keep you comfortable throughout the night.

Wool: Wool is a great material for adding warmth to your head when it’s a little cooler, but is also breathable due to the natural fibres. Wool also naturally absorbs any moisture, and is great for wearing outdoors as it helps you retain your body’s natural temperature, without causing the head to sweat. Because of these properties, wool often features in hats, such as beanies.

Acrylic: Soft acrylic can be found in some hats, being a lightweight option for anyone who experiences a reaction to wool. Acrylic headwear is easy to care for, but is not as breathable as other materials. Some hats are 50% wool and 50% acrylic, meaning the cap can retain warmth whilst still being absorbent, but also stays lightweight and resilient from the acrylic.

Nylon: Nylon provides a great material for a swim cap. Swim caps are perfect for protecting your scalp when swimming. Whether protecting your head from the sun, or whether you simply wish to cover up any hair loss when going for a swim, swim caps have been carefully designed to add a natural volume to the head to give the impression of hair.
Folds, pleats, and gatherings in the caps mimic the natural volume of hair under the cap. Mixing Nylon with Spandex makes swim caps slightly stretchy, so they can mould perfectly to the shape of your head, whilst returning to its original shape afterwards.

Regardless of the severity of hair loss you are experiencing, there is suitable headwear for cancer patients, alopecia, and any other type of hair loss or thinning. If you would like any further advice on the perfect headwear for you, do not hesitate to contact us!
