My hair was very thin and patchy

My hair was very thin and patchy

Remembering

I remember my Mum taking me to the doctors because my hair was very thin and patchy. I was about seven years old and desperately wanted a ponytail like my friends! We went to the doctor’s, the doctor suggested that I should just have short hair and left us to it.

I went through my teens and twenty’s hating everything about my hair. So thin you could see my scalp and bald patches on top. I became an expert on hat-wearing, whatever the weather. When I was in my thirties the doctor told me that I had probably had an underactive thyroid gland for most of my life. So, at least I knew what had caused my hair ‘problem’.Then he told me that as I was used to it, I should just get on with it and not be so vain!

My 20’s & 30’s

Fast forward 20 years

I decided to look into wearing a wig.

My then 18-year-old daughter was horrified! At that time, she was into amateur dramatics and thought that I may purchase could make me like I was in a show! My husband was very supportive, but I decided I wanted to do this on my own.

I went to the local ‘wig shop’

Not an enjoyable experience.

The shop was divided in half with a curtain – one half with wigs on display and the other a mirror with 3 chairs in front of it. So, I had to try wigs sitting next to a couple of giggling girls trying on fancy dress wigs. I could have cried.
I did eventually choose one and took it home in a brown paper bag.

It was awful.

Better times

The following year we went to Florida on holiday and I found a lovely salon with a great selection of wigs and lovely, sympathetic girls who helped me to find a wig that suited me but wasn’t drastically different. I didn’t want to go on holiday and come home with shoulder-length hair! When I saw myself in the mirror I cried, it just looked so natural.

AND NOW,

the best times

I have now found the lovely people at Simply Wigs.

I love to read everyone’s stories and it feels good to know that others have had the same experiences. My daughter is no longer horrified! She’s now 35 and realises that wigs are not just for fun. She helped me to choose my latest wig for her wedding. It’s the Bloom wig from Ellen Wille in Bernstein Rooted. Everyone said how nice my hair was and I just said thank you!

I wish I had found Simply Wigs years ago!

Love to everyone,
Chris x

  1. Chris
Thank you for your story, mine is slightly different in that not only do I have thin patchy hair due to thyroid problems but also stress related alopecia, this time because of the thought of having spinal surgery. I have bits that grow that need cutting off and parts that don’t.
I just thank goodness for wigs and companies like Simply Wigs who look after their clients with kindness.

  2. Thank you for your story, Chris.
Not all wig wearers are completely without hair, are they? Some of us just ‘drew a short straw in life’. You have been through a tough time, but have found great support to help you through it.

As you say, your wig looks completely natural. I, too, have very thin and fine hair and have found wearing a wig such an empowering experience.

  3. Dear Chris
    Your story made me cry.
I too had no help from my doctor and also had an awful experience when I first tried to find a wig.
Aren’t we fortunate to have Simply Wigs looking after us.
    Love to you.

  4. Thank you for sharing your story with us, it must have been so miserable having to put up with wispy bits of hair for so long, but glad you’re sorted now ! You look fab in your new wig , it really suits you .
    Lots of love
    Helen x
