Yes, I said, I’d like to be an NHS volunteer visitor!
But I think: what about my hair, or lack of it? It’s getting worse, not better. Will everyone will look at me.
Well, thanks to Simply Wigs I’ve been able to visit and help in a small hospital ward for the elderly since the world went weird in March.
My wig gives me that extra burst of confidence to go in the ward and be cheerful with staff and patients.
I haven’t met any of them before, so feeling confident enough to say hello to a lot of new people is very important. There are new staff and patients coming in all the time.
I thought, what would I do about my hair? Will everyone stare at me?
Not at all, I can tie my hair back (wig, shhhh!) like the other staff, wear a hairband and a hair scrunchie to pretty it up and carry on. One lovely elderly lady gave me a big smile and said “I like your hair, dear!” Bless her! She didn’t know how much her kind words were extra special to me.
I am visiting the ward to help boost well-being and positivity, so it’s really important that I don’t have to keep thinking of my ‘hair’ and can concentrate on others.
Staff have a ‘Wobble Room’ and a ‘Wobble Box’ full of nice snacks and smellies if they’re feeling wobbly – I think we all need one of those! With the help of the lovely Simply Wigs ladies on the phone my wig is a good and secure fit and very comfortable. I can put hair slides in to make different effects and styles, then just get on with my day.
Because of the rules at the moment people in hospital haven’t been able to have visitors – so I can be there with them (with mask and gloves) to hold their hand and be a listening ear. We can help to contact families by phone and Face time and make that link with loved ones. I’ve even taken the tea trolley round – it’s amazing how a bit of banter and a nice cup of tea can lift your spirits!
I know that people say wear a scarf, a pretty turban or a hat, but I wouldn’t have been able to do this work without my precious wig – it gives me confidence to face the world and feel like me!
Thank you Simply Wigs xx
Love,
Sarah
