My crowning glory, that’s what everybody called my hair. Yes, I was blessed with a head of beautiful thick wavy brunette hair. When I was told my chemo Taxol would definitely cause total hair loss I was devastated. I went to a wig retailer and chose a wig very similar to my own hair.
When my hair started to come out it was distressing especially as there was so much of it and I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror. I tried my wig on and couldn’t get it on right and remember sobbing and throwing it across the floor shouting “I hate you”. I think it was all the pent-up emotion from my secondary cancer diagnosis, knowing I will always be on treatment and therefore unlikely to ever get my back how it once was. I put the wig back in the box.
A few days later I was going to visit my Mum, who I hadn’t been able to see since my hair fell out , and had a second attempt at my wig. I had looked at some YouTube videos and fixed my Velcro band on correctly and then my wig. Going out the first time was scary and I was convinced my wig would look obvious or it would fly off!
Well, I had been talking to my Mum for about 15 minutes and I said “What about my wig?” She said “Oh, have you bought one yet?” (by the way she is bright as a button) I said, “I’m wearing it!” She genuinely hadn’t realised.
This was followed up by somebody asking where I got my highlights done! All of this gave me the confidence I needed. I started to look online and found Simply Wigs. I saw all of these lovely styles and colours and decided to embrace “the world of wigs”. I now have shorter bobs and beachy wave wigs in light browns and blondes. I love deciding what wig I will wear each day. I have totally gone away from my original hairstyle.
My bio hair, although lovely, was very high maintenance. Now all I have to do is give my wig a little shake, put her on, a little comb and I’m good to go.
I’ve found on the Simply Wigs site a lot of information about how to wash the wigs and how to maintain them. Proper shampoo/conditioner is a must plus a fibre oil spray (all my wigs are synthetic fibres) plus a wide-toothed comb.
My only problem now is stopping myself from buying new wigs all of the time which is very difficult given the discounts that Simply Wigs offer!
Love to you all, Deborah x
