I decided to brave the world of wigs

I decided to brave the world of wigs

My way of coping with hair loss was to stop looking in mirrors which also meant stop wearing makeup. On the odd occasion, I saw myself in a mirror by accident and felt horrified and depressed.

When I had to go out during winter I would hide under a woolly hat and would try to avoid going places where I’d have to take it off.

Summer was approaching and I could hardly wear a woolly hat then. My ‘plan B’ was to not go out unless it was absolutely necessary. However, my lovely supportive husband is a sociable soul and my ‘plan B’ was not fair to him. Eventually, and very reluctantly I decided to brave the world of wigs. Luckily I found simply wigs on the internet – as we were in lockdown going to a shop wasn’t possible – and I was too scared anyway!

My first choice was made with fingers crossed and the hope that I wouldn’t look too silly.

When it arrived I put it on – and nearly cried.

I had not fully looked into a mirror for so long and I could not remember what I looked like with hair. To me, it looked awful and just like I had a huge bush on my head! However, I nervously walked down the stairs to show my husband. His first comment was ‘It makes you look younger. That helped a lot although I was sure he was only being nice.

The next day I braved it out into the world. Most people were shocked because they hadn’t seen me without the woolly hat for so long and had forgotten I had hair!!

But no-one seemed to notice it was a wig and they all said how good the new ‘hair-do looked.

A month on and I have just bought my second wig.

I still haven’t got used to seeing this ‘bush’ on my head but it is certainly much better than seeing my hardly visible real hair and now I can go to the places I used to enjoy without being mortified and embarrassed when someone looked at my bald head.

So to all those who are scared of wearing wigs, I would say read all you can from those of us who have braved a wig.

Yes, it would be nice to have a long flowing thick mane of hair but my wig is far less high maintenance and certainly looks good for longer.

I would never have thought I would say this but wigs are not like they were in the 70’s when you could spot them a mile off. Now wigs are so realistic no-one would notice. Please remember you are not on your own – just try wearing your wig on short walks close to home until you get used to wearing it in crowded places.

Take all the compliments, which you WILL get and enjoy getting used to having confidence again.

Love Sheila

  1. I have a full head of hair. But I like to change my hair style often. What a better way to do this than have a variety of beautiful affordable wigs. I was self conscious at first but now I just put it on and go on my way. Its helped me feel more confident about who I am. And I don’t feel I constantly look in mirrors to see how flat my hair is. I would challenge anyone even if you have plenty of hair to embrace wigs. Wear your hair the way you wish.

  2. I absolutely agree Simply Wigs give you the confidence and nobody knows it is a wig!!!! I only wish I had not wasted 30 years of my life being so self conscious and holding back on doing things; wish I had known about Simply Wigs!

  3. Having tried to cover up my hairloss for some time with scarves and hats, I too found it strange to suddenly have hair. It felt like everyone would know. Of course they didn’t as wigs are so natural looking now. I found it helpful to initially wear my wig to places that nobody knew me. I found this gave me time to get used to it, and made me more confident when I met up with people I knew. It’s all about feeling good on the inside. Well done you !

  4. I congratulate you on your new lease of life…for that’s what is. For me I love wearing my beautiful wigs, Thank you simply wigs , it has given me confidence in my own approach to life. I feel that I now want to go out and choose who I want to be today, my family ask me…who are you today mum ? It could be Marion, Elle, Dakota or indeed any of several other pieces I am fortunate to own. So ladies embrace what is a whole new you for you are beautiful xx

  5. Well done Sheila, get out there and enjoy yourself.
It’s hard not to be self conscious at first, because you hardly recognise yourself. My most difficult moments were when people said such things as
“ Your hair’s lovely, have you just had it done?”
    “Err, thank you, yes”
It’s a lovely compliment and if it was my own hair I’d accept it as that. It’s taken a while to learn to do just that, accept the compliment with a smile and head held high and a
“ Thank you, nice of you to say so”
Have fun, buy a few. (Chuck the woolly hat)

  6. Well done, Sheila! Bite the bullet and get on with life. The first steps aren’t easy but suddenly you find you have a new confidence and you wonder why you waited so long. Simply Wigs are fantastic and so helpful.

  7. I suffer from frontal alopecia. I love my wigs, I now have 5 to choose from. I am often asked who my hairdresser is, nobody realises it’s a wig. Since wearing them I have lots of confidence I never had before. They are brilliant, thank you Simple Wigs. Love Lynne. X
