I’ve just switched to a new wig for my daily wear, from a brand I haven’t tried before. It’s from Dimples, and it’s the Caroline wig from the Feather Premier Collection in a colour called Harvest Gold. I’m very interested to see how it wears in comparison with other wigs I’ve had in the past as I get beyond the brand-new stage, and it occurred to me that those who are buying their first wig might not know what to expect.
Hi, I’m Lizzies new wig and this
is my diary…
Day 1:
Feels good to be out of that cramped box. My new owner shook me out and combed me gently with a wide toothed plastic comb – top marks for a good start. I’m so shiny and bouncy and I smell brand new!
Week 1:
She’s been wearing me every day for a week now, and she’s been experimenting with putting me up in a loose ponytail. I’m OK with that, so long as she uses a gentle hairband and doesn’t tug or pull. She’s been waiting for her new Dimples hair care kit to arrive and as soon as it did she treated me to a dose of the Hair Oil spray and a gentle comb through with the Dimples-recommended brush. That did a great job of detangling without pulling.
Time for my first wash. She used the Dimples shampoo and conditioner that came in the pack, and gentle swooshed me through the lukewarm shampoo-y water, then let me soak for a while. Ditto with the conditioner. Then a good spritz of Hair Oil spray when I was dry and a gentle combing and I’m almost as shiny and bouncy as I was on Day 1 though. Not quite though – that first day feeling can never quite be replicated!

Week 2:
A busy week and I’ve seen different parts of the country from my perch on her head this week. London is hard on me – too much pollution and it was hot, so her head was a bit sweaty. I’m looking forward to my second wash to get rid of all that. I’ve been a bit more tangled this week – the older I get the more easily I’ll tangle, but only a tiny bit kinking in the fibres against her clothes at the back so far. I’m claiming that’s because of my awesome silky fibre, she reckons it’s down to her looking after me well. Maybe it’s a bit of both, and time to get a bit more proactive with the Hair Tip Liquid to stop the fibre kink accelerating. At the weekend she had a BBQ. That might be lovely for her but I’m happy to have been left out of it! She wore an old wig instead so I wouldn’t smell of smoke, and so she didn’t accidentally get my long bits frazzled by being too close to the heat. I wouldn’t have minded if she’d kept me on, so long as she’d covered me up with a scarf, but I definitely don’t want to be uncovered near hot ovens, fires or BBQs!

1 – This is my back view, before steaming.

2. – This is embarrassing, close up of frizzy underlayers before steaming

3 – Looking good after steaming straight, rollers to put gentle wave back.

4. – And relax, after using rollers. Back to my best, job done!
Month 1:
There’s some frizzing now in the long underlayers at the back, so she gave me my first gentle steaming. My fibres responded well to it, and it’s really smoothed out those first bits of frizz
First of all, she put me on a polystyrene wig stand, and attached me securely. Then she sectioned the fibre so only the bits needing attention were hanging down – no point steaming where it’s not necessary! Then she used the steamer to straighten out the kinks in the frizzy parts, which left my fibres straight and smooth. Finally, she used some big velcro curlers to put a bit of bounce back into the ends of the steamed fibres – voila, I’m as good as new!
Month 2:
It’s been another busy month and although she’s been kind to me in a lot of ways there are some things I wish she didn’t do.
Top marks for:
• Weekly washes with the right products
• Gentle combing, and thoroughly detangling me every day
• Using conditioning sprays and liquids after every wash and when detangling
• Only using gentle hairbands
Points deducted for:
• Wearing suit jackets and scarves which rub against my underlayers at the back of her neck
• Fiddling with my fibres with her fingers when she’s concentrating at work

I find steaming works fab. It takes a bit of practice & patience but it’s worth it as steaming makes such a difference. You can steam shape back into the wig with Velcro curlers. When steaming the frizz, be sure to section it off & go over the affected areas a few times.
I hope that’s helped x
What is the hair tip liquid? What makes the wig frizzy?
I bought a hand held steamer and tried to improve one of my wigs, as it went frizzy and needed something to bring it back to life.
Sadly it seemed to make no difference
Love the way you wrote that Lizzie and my goodness you look hot in Caroline and that red dress!
Of all the styles/colours that I’ve seen you model/wear I like that length on you the most.
Fabulous!
Denise.
Wow , thanks for the diary ….I’ve just bought first wig and I’m a little nervous of wearing it .I started with hair loss after having my daughter who is now 28 so a long time .I’ve always used concealer but thought go for it and buy a wig .Your diary will help me look after it .
What a palava!!!Wigs should last 6 months but will never happen with longer lengths I’m afraid. I kno through experience the frizz at the ends will get worse. Stick to short at the back collar length eg a bob and you wash condition and go just need to use the fibre conditioner spray every morning
