My Simply Wigs shop experience

My Simply Wigs shop experience

In December 2016 I was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer  that had spread to my lymph nodes. The course of treatment was laid out for me. Chemotherapy, surgery then radio therapy. I am 49 years old with 2 wonderful, adult children. I am the second of 4 sisters, my big sister having had breast cancer in 2015 (when she was 49). As an Office Manager for a busy property development company, I wanted to carry on working as much as possible and in order to do that I decided that I would need to wear a wig.

Simply Wigs Experience

Having searched online, I came across Simply Wigs and called to make an appointment. I live in Cambridgeshire and Simply Wigs is in Huddersfield, but having spoken to a lovely lady on the phone, I decided to book an appointment and make the journey. With my big sister by my side, we programmed the sat nav and set off. I have to say that upon entering the industrial estate where the Simply Wigs unit is situated, we grew apprehensive. It became clear however that Simply Wigs is a diamond nestled in the rough.

We were warmly welcomed and taken to a beautifully decorated room with a dressing table and a large mirror. I sat in a comfortable chair as my hair was gently twisted and pinned up ready to try on a variety of wigs.

Turns out, I have a large head, with a hairline measuring 60cm, so my choice of wigs is limited, but that didn’t stop us. I started by trying on the  New Pretty Mono Wig from Gisela Mayer and we immediately liked it. The fringe was a bit to long, but this could be cut to suit.

We had a lovely afternoon of trying on different styles and colours, doing wig walks, learning about wig maintenance and choosing real hair eyebrows and accessories. This was all so new to me, but it was handled so sensitively that I found the whole experience a pleasant one. As they didn’t have many large wigs in stock, we bought the first wig I’d tried, which I now refer to as my ‘Claudia Winkleman’ as well as some real hair eyebrows, a wig stand, shampoo, conditioner and a comb.

Once home, we went through the website and looked at all wigs available in the large cap size and ordered a few others. These arrived and I settled on 2 other styles – one which is the cropped short Hawaii Mono Deluxe Lace  Large from Gisela Mayer, in the colour Hot Mocha (handy for nipping out to the shops, or when little ones come over to play). The other which is the beautiful  High Tech C Large from Gisela Mayer, in the colour Light Brown. The same colour as my natural hair and perfect for work.

At the time of writing this, I have had 2 cycles of Chemotherapy and have lost all of my hair. I thought losing my hair would freak me out, but it hasn’t. I am used to wearing the wigs and when I’m at work in the bob, people who don’t know, compliment me on my haircut and even those who do know, remark at how real it looks. I have an old favourite wooly hat which I wear when I’m at home, otherwise I flip on a wig and head out confidently.
I’m not sure I’ll go back to having much in the way of natural hair once my hair starts growing back. I was never very good at styling myself and it certainly wasn’t my crowning glory. So I think I’ll grow back a pretty, short, cropped style and then flip on a wig if I’m going out and fancy a new look.

I would like to thank Simply Wigs and the lovely team in Huddersfield,
for their professional, kind, sensitive service.

  1. So happy to hear this story. Well done lovely Victoria, you look amazing!
I wish you all the best with your treatments.
I have had Alopecia for over 20 years and my first experiences of wearing a wig and wig ‘shops’ were not great. Too many stories to tell! Simply wigs was such a wongderful wig site to find when I gave up going to said wig selling places in London. I have been wearing the Shilo for the past 3 years. It’s just me! I wear the champagne colour….. Champagne taste and hair colour!!!

  2. What a brave inspirational lady you are with such a positive attitude…i agree with others you are beautiful with or without the wigs. But you look fab in all three with the most beautiful smile…. i watched both my daughters go through treatment for breast cancer in 2013 at the same time so know what you’re going through, and I am so proud of how brave and positive they both were too…….sending you love and good luck for the future Pam.x

As others have said you look fantastic with no hair, and all three wigs really suit you, you look absolutely gorgeous. Hope your treatment is going well and you’re getting some breaks from it.

  6. Vicki, you look just as beautiful as I remember you and just as beautiful with or without a wig. Even more important is your beautiful attitude. You are an inspiration for all humans (female and male alike).
