‘do we wig wearers end up carting even more stuff around with us in our handbags than we would if we had the sort of hair that grows from follicles?’
I’ve always thought I’m fairly low maintenance in this respect, and don’t carry much extra stuff, but then I started to wonder – does wearing a wig result in a net increase in what I carry? I would have to fess up to a few little extras, not so much in my handbag but certainly in my overnight bag when I travel for work!
So what do I cart around everyday?
Well, I use a lovely soft leather rucksack for work, as I choose to walk from the station to the office which is a fast half hour walk each way, so even weight distribution is important if I don’t want to strain my shoulders and back. It’s pretty big, which is good (I can fit everything in) and bad (I can fit more than is strictly necessary in, and I do!). Non-wig related gear includes:
1. Laptop, 2. Big bag full of chargers, 3. Purse, 4. 2 phones, 5. Brolly, 6. Bottle of water, 7. Reusable carrier bags, 8. Pens etc, 9. Multi-tool (you can take the girl out of engineering but you can’t take the engineering out of the girl!), 10. Headphones and 11. often there’s a pair of heels in there too, as obviously I do the walk to the office in flats.
The only appearance of wig related stuff I carry is a very small make up bag and a comb. The makeup bag has an eyebrow pencil and some eyelash glue in case of emergency with my ‘faked’ brows and lashes, but other than that it’s just the usual stuff eg lipstick, eyeliner and some powder. Most of the time that bag doesn’t see the light of day from one week to the next – by the end of the day my make up is looking pretty faded but I’m too busy to really worry about it, and I can’t be bothered to spend half the day touching up!
Overnight bag?
When it comes to my overnight kit, I again struggle to travel light and tend to cram my poor wheelie case too full. The extra bits and bobs I carry because of being a baldie include:
1. Spare wig – an old one that I use for sport and swimming, which doubles as an emergency fallback should something happen to my usual wig
2. Two hair brushes
3. Wig tape and scissors.
It’s a bit more to carry but I think it’s worth it. I love being able to use a gym or pool whilst I’m away without then having to worry about washing my daily wig – who wants to carry bottles of shampoo and wig balsam around with them? One of the bonuses of wearing a wig is that I don’t have to wash it every day, so having a spare wig with me avoids me getting my main wig sweaty or chlorinated.
Overall I reckon I might even carry less with me on a 3 night trip than other girls – no hairdryer, no shampoo and conditioner,
feels like a win to me!
Its funny to read your story as I was only talking about the very same thing to a friend only last week Lizzie –
Since my total hair loss in just a month last July life has been a bit tough ( as many of us have experienced) and now the contents of my hand bag has changed too. I don’t leave home without an eye brow pencil, lipstick, small mirror and spare head wear. But for me sadly Lizzie no heels these days ?
Your story did make me smile Thank You , Ann
