As expected, I started to lose my hair

As expected, I started to lose my hair

THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR

At the beginning of this year, I felt unwell and after many tests and scans, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

This was such a shock as I had felt so well up to Christmas. I had just handed in my notice to retire in March and was looking forward to holidays and doing some voluntary work and having more time for walking in the New Forest and at the coast.

Instead, I started chemotherapy in March. I started to lose my hair as expected about 3 weeks after the first treatment. I had dreaded this even though my hair was thinning on the top and giving me some concerns.

MY HAIR STARTED TO FALL OUT

As soon as my hair started to fall out I had it shaved off. I can’t lie, it was upsetting but I was ready with a lovely wig from Ellen Wille. My lovely brother-in-law purchased it for me, what a lovely gesture. I purchased my wig well before chemo to get prepared.

To start with I was very self-conscious and thought the wig would blow off in the wind or that people would stare at me and know it was a wig. This was not the case. In fact, I got compliments from friends and family I had not seen for a while who thought I had recently been to the hairdresser and did not realise I had a wig. I chose a wig in a similar style and colour to my hair pre-chemo which made me feel more comfortable.

LONG TERM WIG WEARER?

I have now had six rounds of chemo and a major operation. The hair loss was nothing to worry about at all compared to this. My hair is now starting to grow back but it is very fine and white and it looks as though the hair at the front may not return, so suspect I may be a long-term wig wearer. I have ordered another wig from Simply Wigs, a bit shorter than my existing wig for a bit of variety.

SHOPPING FOR WIGS

Simply Wigs has a huge variety of wigs to choose from in so many lovely colours. The staff have been great at helping me choose a new wig and their website has loads of useful information about the different kinds of wigs and caring for them as this can all be rather scary to start with.
