What are the side effects of getting your hair chemically straightened?

What are the side effects of getting your hair chemically straightened?

I am 72 years old, and by circumstances and choices have been wearing wigs and hairpieces since I was 16 years old. I used to buy synthetic hairpiece plaits from Woolworths. They had the feel of horse tails back then! I should explain, I am of mixed race South American heritage. So my natural hair is a combination mixture of afro Caribbean heritage. The label might sound exotic, but the reality can be different. Especially when related to my hair and the expectation, prejudices, and convenience.

When I was young, I’m talking 70s, having an afro was accepted. However, not in my family, it was likened to not being groomed and classless. Straightening hair, pressing with hot combs was the treatment to achieve that silky straight hair, which I must admit is a manageable look.

My hair became my nemesis. It was my enemy. On a daily basis, it was a chore. The past years with the lack of hairdressers, products, and essentially knowledge, made coping difficult.

Today it’s such a different place and every need is catered for. With the advancement of spectacular wigs, toppers, hairpieces, extensions.

My journey to wearing a wig, was due to 3 disasters with my hair. On all 3 separate occasions, under the hands of professional hairdressers. Having my hair professionally straightened, my hair fell out and was burnt on 2 occasions.

After the first catastrophe, most of you wouldn’t have chanced 2 other times. Yes, I learned the hard way. Hence my love of wigs began. This allowed me to regain my life, time and freedom. I have never looked back. My photos over the years reflect change, not just fashion, but in my outlook of life.

Now I am a widow, my natural hair is grey. So my wigs are silver too, which is a trendy look now, in all ages. I made the right decision for me. With 5 grandchildren and health disabilities, wigs give me time and my self-respect to control how I look. It works for me.

This is my story. What’s yours?

Sending love to you all, Desiree xx

  1. Hi Desiree
What a story! I’m so glad people’s attitudes and times have changed, on so many levels. You look stunning in this colour and style. You’re an inspiration to us all. Thank you for sharing your story and pictures.

  2. Hello , thanks for the information regarding the name of this Wig . However when I have looked the hair is straight , not curly as in the photo . Do you know how the lady made it curly ? What products were used ? Many thanks .

  3. Hi Margaret, it is a really lovely wig! Desiree really looks great in it! This wig is the Audacious wig in shade Onyx Glow. Thank you 🙂

  4. Your hairstyle looks natural and suits you. I agree that wigs save a lot of time in getting our own hair (of whatever type) fit to be seen outside the house. : ) The hot comb treatment sounds scary.
