Breast Cancer and Hair Loss – My Wig is a Godsend

Breast Cancer and Hair Loss – My Wig is a Godsend

Breast cancer and hair loss can come together due to the side effects of chemotherapy. At Simply Wigs, we provide a range of wigs for breast cancer patients. Our wonderful customer, Jayne, shares her experience of finding a wig after experiencing hair thinning before and after her chemotherapy treatment.

When I was young, I always had a good head of hair but then in my early twenties, my hair started to thin significantly, so much so that you could always see my scalp. This made me very self-conscious and there was nothing that either myself or my hairdresser could do to disguise this.

Then back in 2012, when I was 47, out of the blue I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Obviously, this came as a great shock and my first thoughts were that I didn’t want my boys, then aged 10 and 16, to lose their mother. I was told I needed to have a course of chemotherapy and that, subsequently, I would lose my hair. Actually, I wasn’t at all fazed by this prospect; in fact, I thought ‘ooh it may grow back thicker and I may come back blonde!’ After my first chemotherapy session, I noticed a few clumps of hair fell out so I went straight to my hairdresser and she shaved my head.

Initially, I wore a little turban which was fine but then a work colleague mentioned that a friend had gone to a local wig supplier when she had had breast cancer treatment. I booked an appointment and was overjoyed when after a few hours consultation,

I came home with the most beautiful wig’

When I needed my next wig, I did some research and found Simply Wigs. Well, I haven’t looked back since and only wish I had thought about a wig years ago. My self-confidence has grown enormously and, apart from a few close friends, people do not realise I wear a wig. I get so many compliments, “where do you get your hair done?” and “your hair is a beautiful colour!”

I never have a bad hair day! Even after walking the dog on a blustery day, just a shake of the head and hey presto, perfect! It’s a case of throw Erika on and off we go!!! Actually, with the current situation of the Covid-19, my wig is a godsend – no need to worry about going to the hairdresser. In fact, I was in Waitrose yesterday and one of the cashiers said: “oh Jayne your hair looks gorgeous!”

I just smiled!

I have found that my favourite wig that seems to suit me is Erika. I have had ‘her’ in several colours but my current favourite in Copper Glaze. I just ask my hairdresser to trim the fringe to suit me and that’s all that is needed.

So, for any of you out there contemplating getting a wig, I would just say do it – you will not regret a single minute. Simply Wigs have so many to choose from and the ladies in the Customer Services Team are always so very helpful and knowledgeable.

Go for it.

Happy Wig Wearing,

Jayne

  1. Lovely style, looks very natural. I am tempted by this for a change from my shorter ones. Simply Wigs are life savers.
