Does Heat Protector Spray Really Work? What We Think.

Does Heat Protector Spray Really Work? What We Think.

Heat styling is one of the quickest ways to refresh or personalise your wig, but it also raises a few questions. Do I need to use heat protector spray? Does heat protector spray actually work on wigs?
The short answer is yes. But the product you use to protect the hair depends on the type of fibre you’re styling.
Let’s dive into the different fibres, and see the benefits of using heat protector spray, and if it’s worth it!

Styling Human Hair Wigs

Human hair wigs will behave like natural hair, however they do not have the natural oils that come from our scalp to help create a barrier. Using a heat protector spray whilst styling with heat tools is highly recommended.

Using a heat protector spray on human hair wigs have many benefits. This includes reducing moisture loss, prevents dryness and improves the natural shine!

The recommended temperature for heat styling human hair wigs is around 150°C. Always check the manufactures label/guide before applying any heat.

Styling Heat-Friendly Wigs

Heat protector sprays don’t work the same on heat-friendly wigs as they do with human hair wigs, as they are made from plastic fibres. This means that they don’t absorb any product, but can still withstand heat styling.

It’s always a good idea (though not required) to create a protective barrier for the fibres when using heat. Using Ellen Wille Anti-Static Spray prior to using heat will create that barrier. The real protection for heat friendly wigs is using a low temperature. This also helps to keep the fibres nice and soft.

The recommended temperature for heat styling heat-friendly wigs tends to be 130°C. Always check the manufactures label/guide before applying any heat.

Styling Synthetic Wigs

No heat can be used on synthetic wigs, so a heat protector spray is not required for this type of fibre. Although steaming synthetic wigs is a way of settling the fibres, we recommend you seek professional advice before doing anything, or opt for a heat-friendly wig instead.

If styling tools are used on synthetic wigs, it can cause the fibres to melt, become really matted at the ends, or even cause permanent damage, making the wig unwearable.

Just because you can’t use heat on synthetic wigs, doesn’t mean you can’t personalise them! There are a few ways you can use styling products to add texture, or even try a heatless curl method!

How to Safely Heat Style Your Wig

Whether you have a human hair or heat-friendly wig, you must always:

  • Check the manufactures label.
  • Use the lowest temperature possible.
  • Test on a small section first.
  • Avoid applying heat repeatedly on the same area.
  • Keep the use of products lightweight to avoid build-up.

Unfortunately not. The heat protection spray does reduce the risk of damage on your wig, but if you’re going over the recommended temperature whilst styling with heat tools, it will damage the fibres permanently.

We highly recommend a brand called ‘Cloud 9‘, as they have a lowest temperature of 100°C. This brand can be a little pricey, so looking online through Amazon or shopping in-store at Boots for your best option can be helpful. Make sure that when purchasing straighteners/curlers, that they have a temperature gauge going down to 120°C.

It is very unlikely! Heat-friendly wigs are manufactured to have heat used on them, to help keep the fibres conditioned and soft (especially at the ends). For further nourishment, use a little of the Ellen Wille Hair Tip Liquid before applying heat, to lock in that moisture.
