Heat styling is one of the quickest ways to refresh or personalise your wig, but it also raises a few questions. Do I need to use heat protector spray? Does heat protector spray actually work on wigs?
The short answer is yes. But the product you use to protect the hair depends on the type of fibre you’re styling.
Let’s dive into the different fibres, and see the benefits of using heat protector spray, and if it’s worth it!
Styling Human Hair Wigs
Human hair wigs will behave like natural hair, however they do not have the natural oils that come from our scalp to help create a barrier. Using a heat protector spray whilst styling with heat tools is highly recommended.
Using a heat protector spray on human hair wigs have many benefits. This includes reducing moisture loss, prevents dryness and improves the natural shine!
The recommended temperature for heat styling human hair wigs is around 150°C. Always check the manufactures label/guide before applying any heat.
Styling Heat-Friendly Wigs
Heat protector sprays don’t work the same on heat-friendly wigs as they do with human hair wigs, as they are made from plastic fibres. This means that they don’t absorb any product, but can still withstand heat styling.
It’s always a good idea (though not required) to create a protective barrier for the fibres when using heat. Using Ellen Wille Anti-Static Spray prior to using heat will create that barrier. The real protection for heat friendly wigs is using a low temperature. This also helps to keep the fibres nice and soft.
The recommended temperature for heat styling heat-friendly wigs tends to be 130°C. Always check the manufactures label/guide before applying any heat.
Styling Synthetic Wigs
No heat can be used on synthetic wigs, so a heat protector spray is not required for this type of fibre. Although steaming synthetic wigs is a way of settling the fibres, we recommend you seek professional advice before doing anything, or opt for a heat-friendly wig instead.
If styling tools are used on synthetic wigs, it can cause the fibres to melt, become really matted at the ends, or even cause permanent damage, making the wig unwearable.
Just because you can’t use heat on synthetic wigs, doesn’t mean you can’t personalise them! There are a few ways you can use styling products to add texture, or even try a heatless curl method!
