Finding Confidence One Wig At A Time

Finding Confidence One Wig At A Time

Hi, I’m Becky. I’m in my mid 50’s and I didn’t lose my hair all at once, some of my loss was simply as a result of poor life choices.

How it All Began

It started with breakage from bleach, I always seemed to striving to achieve the right shade of blonde! But the main devastation came with menopause, and possibly taking testosterone as part of my HRT package. I found that my once strong hair was not just thinning, but all around my hair line I had bald patches and my hair line looked like a man’s with receding hair.

Finding My Style

I didn’t have alopecia or cancer, and for a long time, I felt guilty even thinking about wigs, as if I didn’t really qualify for one. But I did lots of research and started following a few ‘Wigfluencers’ on Instagram. I was so amazed at the choice and the way women were confidently wearing alternative hair, and many of them just had badly thinning hair.. just like me! So I decided to get my first wig, and I’ll never stop now. Even though my bio hair is slowly growing back, wearing wigs has given me back the confidence I didn’t realise I’d lost.

The Wig community

Since then, wigs have become part of my everyday life, I warn you they can become addictive… I want to try all of them! They’ve helped me feel like the best version of me, and I stopped seeing them as something to be ashamed of and started seeing them as something to celebrate. The wig community is so positive and supportive! If you’re still thinking maybe wigs aren’t for you, just do a couple of searches on Instagram.

I didn’t choose to lose my hair but I did choose what I did about it. I’d always loved the idea of bold, beautiful hair, I just never imagined I’d get there by losing my own!

Love Becky x

  2. They suit you so well! And your story is inspiration to us all.
Please could we know which models of wig you are wearing?

  3. So delighted you have your confidence back. I think unless you go through this experience, it’s impossible to describe to someone else what an incredible difference the amazing uplift it gives to one’s life. You look ABFAB.
    xx

  4. You look amazing!
“I didn’t choose to lose my hair but I did choose what I did about it.”
Your above comment is just how I manage my own hair loss, in my case from Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia. This site has been such a good find, I’ve not seen another site that has photos of real people wearing wigs. This makes it so much easier to choose one. Reading people’s stories and the tips about various things are all useful too.
    Thanks Simply Wigs!

  5. My story is very similar to Becky’s. I’ve always had fine, straight hair but an okay amount – that changed when I had my three children as my hair thinned over a few years. By baby number three it was coming out in my comb. More years passed but then arrived menopause 26 years ago and the loss put on speed, mostly around the crown of my head – the worst place. A few years ago I put my toe in the water and went to a very expensive hair salon as they also provided wigs for NHS patients. The owner was very persuasive and sold me a wig that he chose and he also chose the colour! The cut of the wig was lovely and very flattering but as it wasn’t real hair it was incredibly shiny and I was sure that everyone would know it wasn’t my own hair. Then last year I went to another salon closer to home where they specialised in wigs rather than being a hairdresser’s selling wigs on the side. I splashed out £2000 on the most beautiful real hair wig which I still have but it needs restyling so I went online and found this site. I am now the proud owner of a wig and a topper from Simply Wigs and I love them – they’re not real hair but so good that you’d never know the difference. I’m really looking forward to my next one and I feel like I’m in an adventure story. Who will I be next time? What colour will I dare to order? Incredible new life and what fun at the age of 78!!

  6. Wow that could have been my story , I had a couple of testosterone implants as my menopause Dr said it would give me my vitality back

Sadly I did develop male pattern baldness type of loss
And it shows no sign of retuning but thank goodness for wigs you look Stunning

  7. Becky your Looking great! I can so relate . Started losing my hair 12 years ago . Wouldn’t be without my simply wigs now .
