Uncovering the Relationship Between Menopause and Hair Loss

Uncovering the Relationship Between Menopause and Hair Loss

Sadly, it isn’t unusual for women experiencing menopause to notice new signs of hair thinning or hair loss. Our hair can be such a big part of our identity that changes outside our control, such as thinning or hair loss, can be upsetting and knock self-esteem.

If you are concerned about the rate you are losing your hair, and think it may be connected with hormonal changes within the body, read our informative blog post for more information on the relationship between the menopause and hair loss.

Why Can Menopause Lead to Hair Loss?

The hormonal imbalance brought on by menopause is the main culprit for hair loss in middle-aged women.

The fall in oestrogen and progesterone can cause hair to thin while the relative increase in testosterone can shrink hair follicles.

Menopause can also be the catalyst for other factors such as higher stress levels and sleep loss, which can also cause hair loss.

How to Cope with Menopause Hair Loss

When a woman goes through menopause, they experience a change in hormones as their levels of oestrogen decreases. This decrease in oestrogen results in a woman’s period stopping or becoming infrequent, and can also result in the hair becoming thin, fine, more brittle or fall out.

1. Stress Management Techniques

Stress can be a culprit when it comes to hair loss, and although this period of your life may be distressing right now, this feeling won’t last forever. Focus on stress management techniques such as exercise, meditation, listening to music or a podcast that you enjoy and take some time to focus on yourself!

Most importantly, remind yourself that you are not alone in this and all women will at some point experience menopause.

2. Counselling

Counselling can be beneficial to get your feelings off of your chest and have someone new and impartial to talk to. For information on early menopause, the NHS recommends Health Talk as a resource to hear the experiences of other women dealing with early menopause. You can also access additional help and support for menopause from the NHS or check out our very own hair loss support guides to help you accept and cope with hair loss.

3. Hydration

Staying hydrated is key so you should aim to drink 2 litres of water per day. As well as being generally beneficial, water helps to regulate your circulatory system, which keeps the hair follicles stimulated.

4. Haircare

If you’re concerned about hair loss, now is the time to take care of your hair like never before and treat your locks to a little TLC. Avoid excessive use of heat tools, such as hair dryers and straighteners, which dehydrate your hair and lead to brittleness, and if you dye your hair, either let your hair return to its natural colour or resort to a natural colourant.

Remember to invest in good quality, sulphate and paraben-free shampoos and conditioners and apply a nourishing conditioning treatment or mask once a week. Massaging your scalp when washing can help stimulate the hair follicles, which accelerates growth, and it feels extra luxurious too!

5. Lifestyle and Mindset Change

Menopause hair loss can feel like an uncertain time as it’s a factor you can’t control. However, what you can control is your mindset, staying hydrated and eating well. Hair loss can impact anyone’s confidence, but you can turn this negative into a positive with a change in mindset. Consider this time as an opportunity to experiment with a new hair colour or hairstyle with synthetic or human hair wigs.

For example, maybe you’ve always wanted curly hair without having to spend hours using a hair curler? That’s why wigs are becoming much more fashionable; who wouldn’t want the option to change up their look?

  1. Don’t forget to mention the vital role that HRT can play, especially for people going through premature menopause. It can help with hair loss, bone and muscle mass, cognitive function and the typical flushes and sweats. My menopause started in my early 30s and HRT has been a life saver! Not suitable for everyone, I know, but for those who can and want to use it, it can make all the difference.
