I first had hair loss when I was 19, a small patch which grew back. I never thought about it again until I was 39 when I started losing a lot of hair. It was devastating. I initially tried to style it to mask the thinning area, but eventually, I had to get a wig.
This in itself was an awful experience and I felt so self-conscious. My hair did grow back, but then a year later it went again never to return, but so did my eyebrows and eyelashes. It was such a lonely experience as I knew no one who had experienced something similar and I felt like I lost some of my identity. Sadly my marriage of 21 years ended and I thought at the time at least I had lost my hair as it would certainly have gone again with the stress and pressure in my life.

I continued to source my wigs online, as I found it easier to cope with my anxiety and embarrassment of hair loss on my own. Wig-wearing is a solution, but brings a dislike of high winds, and really hot weather, especially when I don’t suit hats!
My anxiety increases as I worry that others will see I wear a wig. I have now been a wig wearer for 28 years and the wigs today are much better than my early ones. I am so glad I came across Simply Wigs in my internet searches. The choice is vast and the service they offer is great. It’s not always easy to pick the right wig, but they never quibble when orders have to be returned. I wished that I lived near enough to visit their shop.
I still struggle with having no hair and wish I had the courage just to wear different styles and colours on different days! It’s only in the last 3 years that I have been more open with others about my hair loss. Alopecia is still not spoken about very much and I have noticed that I have become a wig-wearer spotter! The plus side to wearing a wig is no bad hair days and hair is done in a flash in the morning. Much as I wish I had my own hair I do feel lucky that I can cover my problem and feel confident to face the day.
Love to you all, Vanessa x
P.S. In the picture I am wearing the Ivy wig from Noriko 🙂
Hi
Thank you so much for all your lovely heart warming comments and compliments x The style I am wearing is IVY Rene of Paris / Noriko .
The wind problem is not re it blowing off, but the fibres not behaving like real hair and being stuck up and me not realising ?. It’s good to know that others share my concerns but also the benefit of wig wearing x
Would love to know what wig you are wearing, it’s fab
Is it possible to know which wig Vanessa is wearing and the colour. She looks great. Helen
Please can Vanessa tell us which wig she is wearing ? The brand and the colour? It looks fab!
Honestly you look gorgeous and it doesn’t look like a wig. I wear them too due to cancer treatment and continued hair loss but, I adore my wigs, far better than any hair I ever had. I feel happy and confident with my looks and I never did before them. I have never had a problem in high winds or any weather to be honest. Enjoy, be confident as your choice of style is perfect.
Don’t feel ashame of wearing wigs. I too wear wig and now they have improved on making wigs . Right now we can wear wigs that look exactley like our own hair, they even have the lace frontal which we can path just as our own hair. My friends and families always compliments me on my different styles and shades. I love wearing wigs.
I have been wearing eggs since 1994,I have had thinning hair as ince my thirties, wigs have come a long way
Thank you very much for these testimonies, i call them testimonies because you’re not just telling stories but you changing some one there who is passing through the same situation.
Wearing a wig is not covering your problems but is covering our mouths because ladies like taking about thing they do not know (gossiping)
I like the step you have taken and for opening up
God bless you, I’m really blessed
Good jobs
I’m glad I’m not alone about hair loss. Indeed wigs have come a long way, now considered an accessory to complete the look. I love that I don’t have to sit in a salon and spend money every few weeks to maintain the hairstyle. Having different lengths, it can appear as hair growth and rotation looks normal for others.
I’m 55 and earlier this year my gorgeous curly hair started to fall out for the first time for no apparent reason. It was devastating at first and as it worsened I didn’t know how I would cope. Then I bought my first wig. I was very self conscious at first but then I got a second and my confidence started to return. I now have about 8 all various styles and shades of blonde. I’m upfront about my wig wearing and everyone has been amazing and I get loads of compliments all the time about my hair and how great it looks!! Simply wigs is brilliant and to be able to return if not suitable is great. I love to look at other customers in the wig before I buy and I find the 360 pic is useful too. My friends are all quite jealous how I can swap and change styles and never have a bad hair day. The hot summer was a challenge and I’ve not yet had a very windy day. Not tried wig tape yet but find a soft headband holds the wig in place nicely. Great to read other peoples experiences and keep wig wearing with confidence girls, you are all amazing !!
Thank you for your lovely piece on hairless…it is devastating..I’ve struggled with it 50 years..
I gave in 8 years ago, when I realised wigs had become so much better…and I’ve never looked back, I love simply wigs..brilliant company..
The money I’ve wasted on thickeners, mousses etc..
I love my look now..and you look fabulous by the way..
No more bad hair days now..
Hi Vanessa, I have been wearing wigs since I was 13 when I had alopecia( I am now 69) Wigs certainly have improved over the years! I had naturally long dark hair when I was young so have gradually changed my wig colours and styles over the years to reflect my age and the fashion! I am now wearing a grey bob Petite Poppy which I love. Wig tape is a life saver for windy days, swimming, keep fit etc! If people comment on my nice hair I tell them the truth, don’t be ashamed be proud of how you look, you look fabulous! x
It is always good to hear of other wig wearers experiences and how they cope with their own hair loss situation. It is such a hugely personal issue and one I struggled with initially, particularly with loss of confidence. However, 10 years on, my wig has just become part of my daily routine and remembering how long my own hair took to wash and style every morning, I would never want to return to those days! Nobody ever guesses I am a wig wearer, and I never give it a thought once it is on my head (except perhaps to think it looks nice!) and I feel perfectly “normal” in every way. Simply Wigs gave great advice at the start, I’ve visited their shop and am always welcomed like an old friend. I would always recommend them for any help and support in a search for the perfect wig.
Thank you for sharing Vanessa. I fully endorse your aversion to high winds and hot weather! I have been wearing wigs for more than 50 years and am also so grateful for the variety and quality of wigs I am able to purchase from Simply Wigs and for their outstanding customer service. Being in contact with others like you is another great bonus. For so many years I had no idea that were so many of us “who wear wigs”. The shared experiences of ladies like you have been inspirational. The style you are wearing looks great.
You look absolutely stunning. I’d love a wig like the one your wearing. What one is it please. You smash it!!!
Vanessa,
Thank you for sharing your journey. I, too, have alopecia and have learned that wigs are absolute life savers! You look so lovely in your short wig, I’m sure you will encourage others to try them. Wishing you every happiness!
Well done . Hold head high and enjoy different colours if you feel like it. I stick with silver grey but might try a colour now I have more confidence. Take care . Simply Wigs have a lot of choice.
So much of what Vanessa says is typical of my own views and emotions. I too wish I had the courage to be open about my wig wearing and try different colours and styles . And I too find myself spotting wigs when I’m out – but I’m hardly ever right ; it’s more a hang up I have about my own appearance and the uneasy feeling that a wig might be spotted on me .
You look lovely! I share many of your concerns too so you have a kindred spirit in me!
I feel for you,
I had patches from the age of 6, tge when i was pregnant with my second child i lost it all. Eye lashes, brows ,body hair, nasal hair etc, that was 36 years ago. I am only now wearing different , but still brown, and short, styles to work and tell people i havd no hair. I feel better for it.
Xxxx
Hi Vanessa – you are so right in that alopecia is not spoken about, I’m sure we all feel: ‘why me?’ which is what my doctor said to me when my hair was falling out some 10-years ago. Sometimes I spot wigs and sometimes it is evident that the wearer is very ill, fortunately I’m not. Have you tried wig tape for extra security? Most of the time I wear a narrow head band too, it is another layer of security. To date, I’ve never had an embarrassing moment! So, I will continue to be a customer of Simply Wigs. Keep smiling, Jan
I am also a wig spotter and I too worry that people will know I wear a wig so I stay with the same style. Any jacket or coat has to have a hood just in case the wind blows. Vanessa I know exactly how you feel but you honestly look fabulous.
