Wearing a wig and getting my confidence back

When it comes to hair loss we get stories from our customers that make us sit up and take note. Getting a lot of media attention is not what Brenda wanted. Because of her bad experience, she just wanted compulsory registration for all hairdressers.

My Hair Journey

In the autumn of 1993, I started a higher education course at a college in Twickenham. I was in my early 40’s, wife, mother of two children aged 20 and 18 and for me, it was an exciting but scary time. What was I doing going back to education at my age and starting a Social Work course, which a few years before would have been completely out of my way of thinking?

November 1993. I went to my usual hairdressers for a perm, something I have had many times before. The procedure was done and my hair with perm rollers in, was wrapped in cling film. This was normal in those days but I have no idea if it still is. After a short while, I told my hairdresser that my scalp was tingling, but she said everything was fine. I went home with what looked and felt like a tight perm. Over the following days my scalp became sore and I eventually consulted my GP who said my scalp looked burnt. I was referred to a consultant dermatologist who said I had burns all over my scalp. More treatment and pain. Lots of tears at home and also at college, where I got fantastic support from my fellow students.

‘Now my wigs are part of me

April 1994. By now I had noticeable hair loss, so went to a well-known store in London’s Oxford Street to buy a wig. I purchased a wig and clearly remember walking to the tube station convinced the wig would fall off. Of course, it didn’t. On my arrival back at my local station, my husband met me and said, ‘I’ve got Brenda back’. I looked like I did before the accident.

I had been advised to consult a solicitor and sue the hairdressing company. So, on top of getting used to wearing a wig, still having treatment, studying at college and running a home, I was into legal matters. An out of court settlement in 1995, the press got hold of the story and I had reporters asking for my views and printing ridiculous things about how much money I had received. I appeared on This Morning with Richard and Judy, GMTV twice and in many other programmes, newspapers and magazines. There was a lot of media interest at the time about hairdressers not being regulated. The BBC took an interest and a programme was made about the hair industry and I was a big part of it.

For many years now I have purchased my wigs from Simply Wigs. I get compliments from people about my hair and they are very surprised if I tell them I wear a wig.

Love,

Brenda

Fine hair was causing Pat a lot of stress. She spent a lot of time and money to try and find a solution, but did she find one?

I always had fine hair

From a young child, I always had fine hair. As I grew older my hair became thinner and I lost my confidence. I spent so much time and money trying to make my thinning hair look thicker it became a huge issue and would take me ages to get ready to go out much to my husband’s irritation because, in all honesty, I couldn’t make it look any better. It all came to a ‘crunch’ when we went to Australia to our son’s wedding. I went to the hairdressers she tried so hard to make it look thicker all to no avail.

On seeing the photographs I was so upset, beautiful dress, gorgeous makeup but the hair! My husband very very nicely said to me ‘ I think it’s time ‘we’ did something about this’. At the time there was a private lady near to my home who helped me. I tried on lots of different wigs and eventually came upon one which I liked. I haven’t looked back.

My confidence is back and it doesn’t take me ages to get ready anymore.

I am very open about the fact that I wear a wig, embrace it and be upfront is the way I look at it. Everyone says they would never know and believe me my friends would tell me. The lady retired a while ago and then I discovered Simply wigs who have given me the most fantastic service, I just cannot fault them. I wear a wig called Radiant in Wheat Mist. It’s just perfect for me. I lead a very active life out in all winds and weather with my dog or off on a cruise ship. I am (I hope) a young 71-year-old and have been wearing wigs for 10 years, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Love,

Pat

  1. Good for you Pat. I have the same issue and now wear wigs when I go out The alternative would be hours of time getting ready Why shouldn’t we? lots of celebs do. I have a daughter who would be the first to tell me if it looked like a wig Glad I did and love buying them. Simply wigs is a wonderful company. Great choices and lovely people x
