I was diagnosed with hypersensitivity pneumonitis

My hair loss journey started after I was diagnosed with a serious lung condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, which can lead to pulmonary fibrosis. I was put on long-term high dose steroids, which I am still on today. I have always had very thick hair throughout my life, but within a couple of months of starting on steroids my hair started to fall out and thin dramatically. My skin has also thinned, and the steroids have caused other issues including diabetes as well.

However, I think the loss of hair had the most impact on me. I suddenly felt that I looked like an old lady at the age of 65! I have never been at the height of fashion, but have always tried to look smart and at my best. I felt my lack of hair was making me feel very down about my overall appearance.

I decided I needed to take some action, and my only option really was to buy a wig. The first wig I bought was ok, but I felt it was ‘too perfect’. To me, it didn’t look natural that not a hair was out of place. I decided to try a wig from Simply Wigs. Initially I ordered one to be sent to my home, but I didn’t like it.

After I spoke to a lovely lady in customer services, she told me I could order 4 to be sent to the shop so I could go and try them on, but was under no obligation to buy one. I went to the shop and had a lovely experience there. I think the lady’s name was Sue. She put me at my ease and, with the help of my sisters as well, we settled on a wig that was not unlike my usual style of hair.

When I get ready for the day, I still feel like that ‘old lady’ when I look in the mirror, until I put my wig on. I feel totally transformed. I feel younger (even though I know I’m not) and so much more confident. I have received many compliments on my ‘hair’ and even a friend asked me if I had just been to the hairdressers that morning when I met her. I’m not afraid to tell people I wear a wig, why should I be ashamed that I do.

I feel very lucky to still be here because my treatment is keeping me alive and if all I have to worry about is wearing a wig then I feel it’s a privilege which is not given to everybody who has suffered from a serious illness.

So, if anyone is in a similar situation to me I would say go for it. Get yourself a wig, feel happier about yourself and just get on and enjoy your life.

Love Kim xx

  1. Hi Jennifer. We are sorry you can’t seem to find a wig that fits when ordering online. Our customer service team can try to help you with this and help to find a wig that fits well. You can contact them on 01484 844557. Many of our wigs come in different sizes to try to suit everyone, and the measurements are on the product pages to try to help with the sizing issue, as we know it can be difficult.

  2. Great uplifting story of overcoming what could be a huge problem and great attitude to have which I’m sure will help others, well done Kim, x

  4. I feel same, my hair has thinned so much on meds, I love style and colour of your wig, definitely with fringe, I would love to try first, I have no wig shops in Southsea though, I have spent fortune on wigs online, they just don’t fit
