Do Weight Loss Drugs Cause Hair Loss?

Do Weight Loss Drugs Cause Hair Loss?

There has often been speculation that popular weight loss drugs cause hair loss in some users. While hair loss isn’t highlighted as a major side effect in research, some users have experienced it, especially after losing weight quickly.

So, do weight loss drugs cause hair loss? In this customer story, Amanda explores her journey of hair loss with weight loss drugs and what she learned along the way.

Hair Loss with Weight Loss Drugs: Amanda’s Story

I lost 35kg and lost my hair – a nightmare that I did not expect.

Losing weight was supposed to be a victory, and after struggling for years, I finally found success with Mounjaro, shedding 35kg and feeling healthier than ever. But what I didn’t anticipate was the devastating side effect: hair loss.

At first, I noticed more strands in my brush, then clumps in the shower. My thick, once beautiful hair was thinning rapidly. Every morning became a dreaded routine – checking my pillow for fallen hair, running my fingers through my scalp only to feel how much was missing. It wasn’t just about vanity; it was about identity.

I had worked so hard to feel better in my body, yet I was now left feeling exposed and vulnerable. I researched endlessly, hoping to find a solution.

Was it:

  • The rapid weight loss?
  • Extreme or rapid weight loss can cause temporary and usually reversible hair loss (telogen effluvium). This type of hair loss usually occurs after stressful events, such as illness or childbirth. It happens because the body prioritises essential functions over hair growth.
  • A nutritional deficiency?
  • Even slightly low levels of vitamins like B12, Zinc, D, or Iron daily can starve your hair follicles, leaving strands limp and growth stunted. Catching shortages early keeps hair healthier. Though some may be more genetically prone to thinning, getting nutrition back on track pays off.
  • The medication itself?
  • Mounjaro itself does not directly cause hair loss. Rather, it is the significant weight loss associated with Mounjaro that can cause telogen effluvium. This can lead to hair loss.

Doctors assured me that hair loss after significant weight loss is common, but that didn’t make it any easier. I tried vitamins, scalp treatments, and gentle care routines, but nothing seemed to slow it down. What was supposed to be a journey of self-improvement turned into an emotional battle.

I felt betrayed by my own body, forced to trade one insecurity for another. Though I’m grateful for the weight loss and health benefits, losing my hair was a cruel twist I never expected. Now, I can only hope for regrowth and remind myself that true confidence comes from within – even when the mirror tells a different story.

  1. Hi Amanda
I am also taking the weight loss drug Wegovy and I have experienced the same problems lots of hair in my brush and clumps in the shower when I wash my hair so I emphasise with you. Sometimes I wear wigs which thankfully are a god send.

  2. Hi. Sorry to hear your story. I do hope your har regrows.
I lost mine after chemotherapy and it didn’t recover. A very fine baby like growth was about it.
I embraced wearing a wig and my confidence in myself returned. People are always amazed when I tell them I’m wearing a wig. I don’t think they’re just being kind, they genuinely are surprised.
Should your hair not return to normal and wearing a wig becomes the norm, embrace it, don’t buy a cheap one and then find a a colour and style you like. Only my old hairdresser was able to tell I was wearing a wig.
I’ve just started Mounjaro but I don’t have to worry about loosing my hair.
    Good luck.

  3. Fingers crossed for you. I lost most of my hair after bariatric surgery. I wasn’t warned before. I was then told “it should grow back” in an offhand manner. It hasn’t. The weight loss was fantastic and I started exercise classes to tone up
The weight stayed off easily, but the 2nd covid shutdown did for me and I’ve put on 2st of the 10 I lost. And I’ve a collection of wigs and hats. So lucky to have found Simply Wigs.

  4. Hi Amanda, I do empathise with you. Due to extreme stress @ work I experienced dramatic weight loss followed swiftly by excessive hair loss. Within a matter of months I had no hair and was so thin at 5′ 9″ that my family and friends feared for me.
It’s really hard losing your hair as it is a big part of your identity. Take heart it will start growing back as long as you ensure your nutritional status is good.
I have learnt to love my wig while my hair follicles revive themselves. Stay positive, be patient & good luck with your hair journey.
    Anastasia
