Oh, to have hair that would hold a style! Both of my parents had very fine hair so I suppose that there was very little hope for me and my sis.
At school, in the 1950s I was a tomboy with a pudding basin cut and a Kirby grip holding hair from out of my eyes. Very occasionally Mum would buy a Twink Perm Kit which resulted in a headful of horrors!
As a teenager in the 60’s I took charge of my own hair and learned how to use Amami setting
lotion – first with pin curls then with rollers. The addition of backcombing and loads of hair
spray produced quite a reasonable flick-up style. But this was the Swinging 60s and synthetic wigs became the rage.
My sister and I first discovered them in 1968 at the Ideal Home Exhibition. I had always wanted a headful of BIG CURLS and this was my chance. On the days that I wore the wig, my personality changed from quiet & introverted to bubbly and bouncy. After that day at the Ideal Home Exhibition, my sister never went back to her own hair – it was wigs all the way for the rest of her life!
The ’70s saw me take a job in Hong Kong where the hot and humid climate played havoc with my tresses. Back combing and hair spray no longer worked so I opted for a long straight style which needed very little upkeep. In the 80s BIG HAIR became the rage and the only option I had was to try another perm.
In the 90s came the dreaded menopause and I thought I was losing my mind as well as my hair. After 4 years of hell I discovered HRT and learned how to smile again – AND being pumped up with oestrogen did wonders for my hair!
In the Naughties I did become a little bit naughty and splashed out on a cruise – and best of all discovered long flowing Hair Pieces!
The 2010s were good and I started to really enjoy myself. But all good things must come to an end and in 2019 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surgery, radiotherapy and oestrogen-blocking medication did nothing for a lifetime of thin hair and my scalp started to show
through.
Now that we are in the 2020s and I am in my seventies and I have learned to live with my ever-thinning hair – but that does not mean that I am not up for a change. Having just discovered Simply Wigs it is safe to say that I will return to their wonderful website time and time again.
Ellen Wille seems to make the perfect size for me and oh, after 70+ years how wonderful it is to occasionally look in the mirror and at long last actually see a style!
Here, I am wearing the Link wig from the Ellen Wille, Perucci Collection in colour Sandy Blonde Rooted.
Take care, and sending all my love. Christine xx
Hello Christine I am also in my 70s, always suffered thin air which has all but disappeared from many years of chemotherapy for my cancer but, Simply Wigs are my saviours. I have bought loads and love them. I am the person I always wanted to be and their service is just the best. Enjoy your new hair, I have never looked back.
You look gorgeous Christine. Truly beautiful inside and out xxxxx
Hello Christine, I so identify with your story. I am also in my 70’s and have had very fine hair all my life. Amami, Tweedy Twink and hairspray, I remember them so well.
I have bought wigs in the past but somehow I’ve never had the courage to wear them outside yet.
You really suit yours.
Hi Christine! I can completely relate to your story. I too am in my seventies, with fine hair, and I well remember home perms, Amami setting lotion, backcombing ….and then later, breast cancer, twice. I hated losing my hair, but took to wearing wigs quite happily. They make life so much easier! My hair now is as fine as ever and always tricky to style, so I’m giving some serious thought to returning to wearing wigs. We shall see! Yours looks great. Linda xx
Loved your story Christine. I am quite new to wig wearing but it really has changed my life and confidence. I am into my 70,s and hair is getting really thin due to years of bleaching etc etc. Now I just pop on a wig and walk out with a smile!!! Simply Wigs has been my life or should I say hair saver. Take care. Jill xxx
Hi Christine what a delight to read your letter, I too am in my 70’s and my hair journey through the years mimics yours exactly even down to the Amami setting lotion and the home perms! I can laugh about it now but how I envied anyone with thick curly hair. I now wear wigs full time after B12 deficiency triggered Frontal fibrosing Alopecia, if only simply Wigs were around back then. Love from Tricia x
