Unfortunately, not all online stores are reputable. Over time, the UK wig market has become challenging for both legitimate wig websites and consumers, with fraudulent wig companies putting up their best fight to fool wig-wearers.
In this blog, we’ll discuss why it’s become trickier to identify scam wig companies online, how you can tell if a site is fraudulent, and some wig sites to avoid at all costs.
Why Has it Become Difficult to Identify Scam Wig Sites?
Similar prices: Many cheaper, poorer-quality wig companies have started to raise their prices to a point where they fall in the same price range as wig sellers like Simply Wigs. Ultimately, this price shift has created some confusion for customers, as suspiciously low price points used to be a key indicator of inferior products. Now, consumers can’t always judge the quality of a wig on its price alone. Furthermore, with prices being so similar, consumers often confuse higher-priced established wig companies for scammers.
Similar visuals: It has become harder to differentiate sites, especially as fraudulent ones have started mimicking the web design and images used on the best legitimate wig websites. Appearance has further blurred the lines between good and bad wig sites and increased consumers’ wariness to shop online.
What Do Scam Wig Companies Do?
Scam wig companies are deceitful groups or individuals who use the front of being a reputable wig company. Some of them look almost indistinguishable from legitimate companies.
They scam customers in a variety of ways:

How to Tell Legit Wig Sites from the Fake
So, how do you know if you’re shopping online at a legitimate wig company?
The problem with fraudulent websites is that they can look so convincing when they pose as top-rated wig companies. However, there are tell-tale signs to look out for. These include:
The first thing you should do is search for the company’s name, with the word ‘reviews’ – for example, ‘ewigs reviews’. Some guidance to check that reviews are real includes:
– Don’t look at reviews on the website itself. If you have any doubts about a company, make sure you check the reviews on an independent site like REVIEWS.io and Trustpilot. The company can put anything they like on their own website! For example, Ewigs has over 4,000 reviews on their website and every single one is four or five stars, but if you look at review sites, the majority are only one or two stars.
– Pay attention to negative reviews. While most sites will have some negative reviews, seeing what people are complaining about can give you a better idea of what you’re dealing with. Look for trends among negative reviews – if lots of reviewers found they never received a product, or received a different product than they expected, it’s not an isolated incident.
– Pictures and videos. We love seeing our beautiful customers wearing their creations and we encourage people to take pictures in their wigs to send to us or attach to reviews. Scam companies aren’t usually likely to take the time to find homemade footage or pictures, and many scam sites use poorly rendered images (so they might be blurry or look stretched).
Can you find any contact information about the page? Often, scam wig companies will just have a contact form, and maybe a phone number or email address. Reputable wig sellers should have a full address available (which companies pretending to be based in the UK won’t have), and often, you’ll be able to contact them via social media as well.
A good rule of thumb when shopping online is ‘if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is’ – if you’ve found a wig that retails at £200 being sold for £20, there’s likely there’s something else at play!
We’re not suggesting that you run every website through a grammar checker before you buy, but if the content on the site is stilted, unclear or poorly written, that should wave a red flag.
When you click on a new website, your browser will tell you if the site is secure or not with a little padlock symbol. If the site is not secure, you should avoid spending any money with the company, as your information will not be safe!
If you’re unsure if a company is legitimate, you can always check with Companies House. All limited companies in the UK must be registered with Companies House and it will provide you with the director’s name(s) and the company’s history. If they’re not registered, that means that they don’t have a physical shop or office in the UK.
If you have bought a wig and you are unsure about its quality, be aware of a chemical smell. This smell appears when the natural hair colour has been stripped out of the wig in order for it to be chemically dyed to a different range of colours. The stripping of the colour also strips away the hair quality, leaving you with a substandard wig.
Back in 2014, Emma appeared on Radio 4’s consumer affairs programme, You & Yours, to discuss the trend of disreputable wig companies trading online to UK customers. Listen as Emma shares a customer story and some caring and helpful advice, explaining how non-UK wig companies are cloning trustworthy wig websites and using .co.uk addresses to fool customers into thinking they are reliable websites.

What to Look for in Reliable Wig Companies
So what are the green flags? What can you look for in a company that is worth your custom?

Final Advice on Avoiding Scam Wig Companies
1. Check the URL
We have also been made aware that there are several companies using the Simply Wigs name in their advertising. Always make sure you’re shopping on our official site to avoid being caught out! Make sure the URL is correct before entering any information.
Check out the listings below; the first is from our official site, but the second is a different site using our name. We’ve highlighted the URLs in red so you know what to look for!

2. Do your research
When you’re browsing cheap ‘UK-based’ wig sites, be cautious and do your research before you buy any new products. Every week, we talk to heartbroken people who these companies have scammed, and we are angry and saddened that they are still allowed to trade.
3. Spread the word!
As many scam wig companies are not based in the UK, we are unable to prosecute them. However, if Trading Standards cannot protect people who may be shopping at a very vulnerable time in their lives, then it’s time we spread the word ourselves!
We ask that you please repost this through your own social channels. Together, we can get the word out that we will not be duped by these dishonourable companies anymore.
Our team knows that buying a wig can be an emotional and highly personal process. The UK has many highly-rated, quality, legitimate wig companies that will endeavour to make the process as easy and painless as possible.
When it comes down to it, if you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a company, you’ll be safer not spending your money with them. If you have any questions about this topic, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. The Simply Wigs team are always here to help.

Ciciwigs is biggest scam took a month and wasnt wat i odered so disappionted please ciciwgs a scammm

I’m not great on computers but I hate to be stole from my husband passed away my hairs falling out for someone to make you feel worse than I do! Please anything you can tell me to do I would appreciate thank you
I agree. I bought a wig from Wigsbuy and it was nothing like advertised. It’s not even wearable, it is so poorly made, and they make it so hard to return that you just give up and take the loss. I will never buy anything from them again!
I seem to be having the same problem with this company. Took our money via PayPal still no hair pieces and no response
Add Evelyn Wigs.
Do not purchase form them. They will send you something completely different from what you ordered and then expect you to pay to send it back to them and they are based in China.
Paypal will find in their favour if you file a dispute or claim because you refuse to incur the cost to send it back to china..
Wigsbuy also.
Pipixia Wigs. Any hair wig shop with the email: [email protected]
Scammers. Also, take money via Paypal.
Update – the wigs did arrive and for costumes they are not bad but nowhere near the quality it claimed to be – fortunately i bought them for that purpose but if i had wanted a hairpiece for every day that looked natural i would be incredibly disappointed
Add Conserve – tracking numbers are rubbish look like they are US based but are actually in China
Add Wigsbury to the list. I have not purchased from them but have done my homework on them.
Rosie what’s the name of the company? Simply wigs send me this email that you made a comment it’s what I’m reading yours now ,I was also ripped off this year and it’s still on dispute with my credit card.Do not purchasing anything from FB they’ll trick you,I only want to used my credit card then as I place my order there’s the Paypal means it’s from China
Same thing happened to me, I opened up the package and all I could say was WTF. Never again, can’t get my money back so I’ll use it for Halloween (this will really scare the people as it scared me).
Did you just call PayPal I used a credit card but I’m feed up! I wood just like to get my money back at this point
Hate hearing this I have been waiting for 30 days to receive my 2 hair pieces I keep emailing them they keep saying there sending it out! Now I’m really mad how long did it take you to get
Add REWIGS to the list of scammers too.
Ordered 2 wings from belment on jan.28 .never recieved them.they will not respond .also went thru paypal.why does PayPal bother with these people .they know their scammers
October of last year I ordered a wig from Facebook had an option to charge Paypal or Credit card I choose Credit card but when I click Place your order Paypal was with it! They use my credit card and was to late to Cancel, this happened to me before, but I emailed and called Paypal I was told it will be ok.After almost a month I receive the wigs and I was shocked! It wasn’t want I ordered! It was so faked artificial not human hair! I was freaking mad I was ripped off. I ordered it for my friend who has cancer and still in treatment.
Howig.co.uk
Yes! This company is fraudulent!
DO NOT BUY!
HoWig.co.uk KEEP AWAY FROM THESE SCAMMERS! YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MONEY AND HAVE BIG PROBLEMS GETTING IT BACK! THEY LIE ABOUT THEIR LOCATION! THEY ARE BASED IN CHINA!
Don’t give up. PayPal has some obligation toyou under Trading Standards.if you paid by credit card, the company should underwrite as well. Make a real fuss. I did. You get the refund then. They should not trade with scam companies. Good luck.
I recently ordered a curly lace front wig and was sent a totally different wig. Not lace front and not the style. It is a ugly mess. I filed a complaint with my bank as I could not get satisfaction from pay pal whom I paid my money to. Tried to use email address on package with no success. Bank is investing my claim.
Has anyone heard of Wigbaba?
I ordered from Belment in January 20,20. Have not received my order. I went through paypal as well. I guessI will have to just take the loss. It really matters to me. I have limited income and cannot reorder through another company. Live and learn I guess.
The wig I bought had to be returned within a certain amount of time or you would lose your money. I e-mailed them many times, there was no number where you could call them so I finally sent the wig back to the address that the wig came in. Only AFTER I returned the wig they e-mailed me and told me I sent it back to the wrong address and gave me the address I “should” have sent it to. They said to return the wig to that address when I already told them I already returned the wig to the address on the package it came in. I filed a dispute and LOST because Pay Pal said I returned it to the wrong address! It cost me $23 to sent the wig back to China!
They are all based in China
I have had a negative experience with an online wig company recently. The company is HoWig.co.uk
It turns out they are not even based in the UK! Similar to alot of your other customer experiences I paid alot of money (£268) and received hair that you wouldn’t mop the floor with ( and that was after a very long wait and lots of emails)
There is no customer service contact, and no phone number. It leaves you feeling absolutely stupid and at a loss of faith in online purchases.
I have now involved the police, and ombudsman. I have been told there are things you can do, but it’s a very draining process.
The company is affiliated with so many other companies also eg ‘urwig’ ‘wigsis’ to name but a few.
Good luck everyone. Make sure you remember to go on them consumer websites and leave an honest review about the company you have used. These companies clearly pay for positive reviews to be posted. There are some out there! ….just that there are plenty of heartbreaking ones too. The real honest ones. It’s awful what these companies are getting away with.
Contact your bank and open a charge dispute case, or request this with PayPal. That’s who they tend to take the payment with. They need to be stopped.
Thank you I sure Will!
Choolor: I order from them to and l have lupus and need my wig.I will be reporting the to PayPal and I will call the state att offices. We need to keep reporting them and letting everyone no we do not have money like that I will not stop to I get my wig or my money.
If you scroll the comments, you will find contact details for Belment, provided by PayPal. I got full refund via
Aypsld help. They ask we report to Trading Standards.
I ordered 2 wigs from Belment. They did not look like photo on website. Poor quality. One wig was wrong color. I’ve sent several emails. Telephone number is international and I refuse to pay for an international call. Both wigs were not texture shown on website. Do not buy from this company.
Same here. I think I was scammed. They won’t respond to my emails. Have you been able to reach anyone yet?
Same thing happened to me. Have you received your purchase or heard anything from them? None of my emails are being answered.
I sent back to the address that was on the package in which I received the wig because they wouldn’t give me an address to return it. I filed a dispute with Pay Pal and lost because the wig company told me I didn’t send it back to the correct address and ONLY THEN after I returned it they gave the the “correct” address where I should have sent it!
PayPal should not use them since they are fraudulent
I purchased a wig from Alice it took my money sent to Szyrtradradeli I know I was duped
I also have sent several emails to Belment. I have a tracking number but it gives me zero information when I track it. I ordered this on January 23,2020. I guess I will have to give up on this as well. I will file it with PayPal as well…
Wigladies says the wig is 19.99,then they change it to 29.99 and add 10.00 more for shipping. They won’t give a tracking #. They’re RUDE to the customers. Read the statements.
Also I would like to add the following;
CHEERFILL
I have tried every email I could find?!!? Asking only for a Return address! Over 10emails
All I get is compurized message.. saying we are research ing.
. advised Nothing to research. Just need damn address…all computer msgs.
I am sending back COD if I can to whatever address was on packing
Does anyone know about THIS Co?
I agree… ordered a wig 19th Jan 2020. When I contacted them yesterday 4th Feb they had not started it , but said if I wanted a refund would only get 60%. I am fuming. How can they charge when they haven’t even started the wig. I am fighting this and will go to Consumer rights. Watch this space!!!!!
I ordered a wig from Belment paypal, still haven’t heard from them. I didn’t know about the fraudulent companies until now. Thanks for making us aware of this fraud. I will never order again.
Hi Brenda! make sure file a dispute and send them copies of this
that will be your supporting document. Also if you still have a copy
of the order confirmation that will help too. I just mailed mine a picture
of the plastic synthetic wig.
I’m still waiting from Belment .com I ordered January 9,2020 nothing yet I’m out of 50.00
Yes,they will,contact them and file a dispute
I ordered a wig also, I received the wrong one & my credit card was billed as well. It went through PayPal and they have been giving me the run around as well.
Yes it was I also emailed belment and got no response at all.
Thank you for saving me
I ordered a wig from a App from Facebook and I still haven’t received my merchandise and it was from Belment and paypal
REWIGS wouldn’t give me an address where to return the wig so I sent it back to the return address the wig came from. If you don’t return it within a certain time you don’t get a refund. I asked and asked and asked for a return address which they wouldn’t give me. Only when I told them that I returned the wig to the address the wig came in then THEN responded and told me that wasn’t the right address to return it and said to return it to this address when I told them I had already returned it to the address where it came from!
REWIGS should be added to this scam list!
Good Luck,Dorothy! It happened to me and Paypal told me to return the item
but it will cost me from $39 to $64 and he send the invalid address. To this day
my dispute from UBER credit card was never resolve, she stated that the Paypal did not
want to refund what the merchant owed
